Harvey Milk Award

The Harvey Milk Award recognized the leadership, vision and commitment of a faculty or staff member to the LGBTQ+ communities at Wichita State University. This award was given annually at the Lavender Graduation. However, the Harvey Milk Award has been discontinued and is now re-envisioned as the Stephanie Mott Living Authentically Award.

Who was Harvey Milk?

Harvey Milk (May 22, 1930-November 27, 1978) was an American politician and the first openly gay elected official in the state of California. He was a gay rights activist and community leader. In 1977, he was elected to San Francisco's Board of Supervisors; however, he was tragically shot and killed the following year. Learn more about Harvey Milk and his legacy.
