Title: Addressing Evidence-Based Health Benefits of Human-Animal Interaction

Purpose: “HABRI is issuing a call for research proposals from institutions and organizations across the globe to investigate the health outcomes of pet ownership and/or animal-assisted interventions (AAI) or therapy, both for the people and the animals involved. Proposals should have a strong theoretical framework and focus on innovative approaches to studying the health effects of companion animals on humans within the following broad categories: Child Health and Development, Healthy Aging and Mental & Physical Health and Wellness. In an effort to help address larger societal challenges, proposals that have potential to impact current public health crises or issues at the forefront of public concern are welcomed. Topics include (but are not limited to) impacts on diverse and under-represented populations, social isolation and loneliness, suicide prevention, addiction, trauma and/or post-traumatic stress, obesity, and heart health.”

Mellon Foundation jointly support individual scholars pursuing interpretive research projects that require digital expression and digital publication. To be considered under this opportunity, an applicant’s plans for digital publication must be integral to the project’s research goals. That is, the project must be conceived as digital because the research topics being addressed and methods applied demand presentation beyond traditional print publication. Each member university is limited to one award per fiscal year. Awards in the 2022 Cycle 2 competition are included in the limit. Up to $4,000 may be requested to support an event that involves participants from more than one ORAU member institution, including students. Examples of such events include visits to an ORAU consortium member by a renowned speaker, conferences or workshops with a focused theme, or a technology transfer/business plan competition. Purpose: “The Addressing Systems Challenges through Engineering Teams (ASCENT) program is a strategic investment of ECCS that emphasizes new collaboration modalities among the various ECCS supported sub-disciplines. ASCENT encourages robust collaborations among the devices, circuits, algorithms, systems, and networks research communities to develop innovative projects. ASCENT seeks proposals that are bold and ground-breaking transcending the perspectives and approaches typical of disciplinary research efforts. ASCENT projects are expected to lead to disruptive technologies or nucleate entirely new research fields motivated by the most pressing societal challenges the global community faces. In response to the national priority that calls for sustained scientific leadership and continued growth in semiconductor technology, this ASCENT solicitation will focus on two specific research themes: Future Semiconductor Technology (FST) and Sustainable Micro- and Nano-Electronics (SMN).” Note, a webinar about this solicitation will be held on January 24, 2022.

Purpose: “The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to develop new, exploratory methods, approaches, and/or tools to apply to existing data streams (e.g., electronic health records, syndromic surveillance, claims data, registry data, pharmacy dispensing, and mortality records) that could provide novel insights into the dynamics of opioid and prescription drugs misuse, addiction, recovery, relapse, and recovery to facilitate rapid understanding of the opioid epidemic for prevention and treatment or to develop methods for small area estimation that inform decisions of local (e.g., substate) jurisdictions. It will emphasize approaches that shorten the lags between data capture and data availability so the data is available real-time or near real-time to provide actionable insights, and methods and tools that improve efficiency and practical use of surveillance, clinical or other relevant data that may allow for faster or better localized responses or better allocation of resources to address the opioid epidemic.”
Amount: The combined budget for direct costs for the two-year project period may not exceed $275,000.

Title: Petroleum Research Fund
Application Deadline: March 11, 2022
Purpose: “The Petroleum Research Fund is an endowed fund, managed by the American Chemical Society that supports fundamental research directly related to petroleum or fossil fuels at nonprofit institutions (generally colleges and universities) in the United States and other countries. ACS Petroleum Research Fund (ACS PRF) grants are intended as seed money, to enable an investigator to initiate a new research direction in the areas of synthetic organic chemistry, geochemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical organic chemistry, surface science and catalysis, chemical physics and physical chemistry, polymer science, geology and geophysics, chemical and petroleum engineering, and materials science. The investigator should not have published or received financial support from another funding agency for the proposed research. Also, proposals that the ACS PRF Committee feels are a logical extension of an investigator’s previous research may be denied as ‘not a new direction.’”

The minimum award is $50,000. There is no maximum price limit for the instrument; however, the maximum award is $600,000. Instruments supported include, but are not limited to: X-ray diffractometers, mass spectrometers, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, DNA and protein sequencers, biosensors, electron and light microscopes, flow cytometers, and biomedical imagers.”

Sound Health Network: Music During Incarceration: January 26, 2022
Join us for our next webinar on Music during Incarceration. Our panel will include Alison Etter, MM, MT-BC, a music therapist working at Kerrville State Hospital, serving individuals on a forensic commitment, such as those who were found not guilty by reason of insanity. She will be joined by ethnomusicologist Benjamin Harbert, PhD, who directed the film Follow Me Down: Portraits of Louisiana Prison Musicians and who is an Associate Professor at Georgetown University, along with Conseula Gaines, an organizer, educator and motivational speaker who aims to change the criminal justice system in the US, after spending 22 years incarcerated for a crime of passion. The Sound Health Network is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, in partnership with the University of California, San Francisco, in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and Renée Fleming.

The most challenging barrier for R&D teams to make use of machine learning and artificial intelligence is not using the best technique, but having access to clean, structured data. Current data systems often fall short, with inputs and outputs not connected, ambiguity in naming, and under-specification of results. As a result, machine learning wins are isolated to teams working on specialized projects. Watch this webinar to learn the framework for a modern, structured, data management system. When a traditional ELN or LIMS is used, teams often still work in spreadsheets, making it impossible for the entire company to benefit from their learnings. The theme for this year’s meeting is Public Health Security and Innovation: Lessons Learned from COVID-19. Your participation will provide an opportunity for you and your colleagues to discuss key technology, economic, and policy challenges and opportunities. The 2022 Annual Meeting will be held virtually over two days. Sessions will begin on Monday, March 7, and conclude on Tuesday, March 8. Advance registration is required before February 28, 2022. There is no registration fee to attend, and no limit on the number of university representatives wishing to attend.
