Congratulations to those who received grants in June! Thanks to all of their talents and hard work, as of June 30, 2022, WSU researchers under Academic Affairs have submitted proposals budgeting a total of $95,428,904, received $41,026,107 in awards, and generated $3,560,319 in indirect cost recovery for FY2022.As announced later in this newsletter, Brenda Achey has taken over the role of Associate Director of Post-Award for the Office of Research in Academic Affairs, while Judi McBroom concentrates on her role as a Senior Grant Administrator. Judi provided great leadership and expertise during a time of significant transition, and now looks forward to focusing on the awards management of her specific researchers, and spending more time with her family. In addition to thanking Judi for setting the Associate Director position on a positive path, I also thank Traci Shepherd and Md Gofur for working as a team with Judi to perform the leadership responsibilities for the Post-Award team on an interim basis, before this Associate Director position was finalized in December. The entire post-award team benefits from the expertise and direct oversight of Michelle Locke, Controller of WSU.Starting with today's introduction to Brenda, we will provide a new vignette each month to help you get to know all of those who serve you in the Office of Research, and their specific roles. William T. Grant Foundation: Apply for Early-Career Reviewer Program by July 27, 2022
The early-career reviewer program recruits early-career researchers to serve as peer-reviewers of grant proposals submitted to the William T. Grant Foundation for studies on improving the use of research evidence. Apart from reading and evaluating grant proposals in their area of expertise, early-career reviewers receive personalized feedback from Foundation program officers and have access to additional reviews of assigned proposals prepared by senior peer-reviewers. Altogether, this professional development program aims to build early-career researchers’ understanding of the proposal evaluation and peer-review process for research grants in order to strengthen their own proposal writing skills and ultimately advance their careers.

Just Add Arts Symposium: Strengthening Literacy and Social Emotional Learning Through Arts Integration: July 27-29, 2022
Arts integration engages diverse learners through music, dance, poetry, visual art and drama to understand and express their learning of curriculum concepts through the arts. Now arts integration isn’t just for the art teacher. These strategies can be incorporated by all educators from early childhood to 12th grade as well as school support staff. In addition to the hands-on workshops for 1st-12th grade educators, there will be sessions specifically for kindergarten and preschool educators, sponsored by The Wolf Trap Institute of Early Learning Through the Arts.

ORAU Virtual Stakeholder Engagement Workshop: Building a Research Agenda – How Does the Water Flow? August 11, 2022
ORAU’s Research and University Partnerships Office, in partnership with Florida State University (FSU), is hosting a virtual stakeholder engagement workshop on Water Quality and Public Health. We invite interested faculty, researchers, and students at your institution to attend this event focused on discussing research gaps and frameworks to advance water quality science. The President’s Executive Order lays out a responsibility to “improve public health and the environment; to ensure access to clean air and water; and to limit exposure to dangerous chemicals and pesticides.” The Administration is establishing an Office of Environmental Justice within the Department of Health and Human Services, which will focus on climate change impacts to the environment and associated impacts to health based on where people spend most of their time.

NSF Mid-Scale Research Infrastructure Project Execution Plan Workshop: August 19, 2022
This workshop will prepare social and behavioral science, education, and computer science researchers for the submission of an NSF Mid-scale Research Infrastructure proposal. The workshop focuses specifically on development of the Project Execution Plan (PEP), which guides the project management for such a project. Workshop participants will gain an understanding of what a PEP is, what PEP requirements are for NSF Midscale proposals and how to develop an effective PEP for their project.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Artificial Intelligence Institute (NAII) Brain Summit 2022: September 7-9, 2022
In this inaugural three-day event, the National Artificial Intelligence Institute plans to showcase how AI impacts three areas of critical importance to Veterans' health: mental health, brain injury & rehabilitation, and brain cancer. Our goal is to bring together bright minds to give idea-focused talks on a wide range of artificial intelligence (AI) and mental health subjects, facilitating thought-provoking conversations and fostering learning, innovation, and collaboration. Panels will focus on the VA Radiology AI Workgroup, the State of TBI Management, and AI in Suicide Prevention at VA. The event will be open to representatives from VA and across government, research and health care institutions, non-profit organizations, and private industry interested in sharing the latest findings and best practices related to brain health.

NIH Diverse Voices Virtual Talk: Violence & Women: September 29, 2022
NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH)’s new quarterly lecture series, titled “Diverse Voices: Intersectionality and the Health of Women,” will amplify research that incorporates an intersectional framework and addresses the breadth of topics relevant to the health of women. The September 29, 2022, session of “Diverse Voices" will focus on violence and women, featuring presentations from Natacha De Genna, Ph.D., of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and Sahnah Lim, Ph.D., M.P.H., M.I.A., of the New York University Grossman School of Medicine.

Learn to Use BeoShock
Wichita State University continues to host Beoshock, a High-performance Computing Cluster (HPC). This HPC is available and free to faculty members, researchers and students engaged in course work or research activities. BeoShock runs the CentOS Linux operating system and features approximately 720 processor cores, two high memory compute nodes with 1.5 terabytes of memory, and four graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerators.

Office of Research Announces New Post-Award Associate Director: Brenda Achey
We are excited to announce that Brenda Achey has been promoted to serve as the Associate Director of the Post-Award team beginning July 2022. In this new role, Brenda will provide leadership to the team of Research Grant Administrators who support the University's academic researchers and public service centers by managing the University's sponsored research accounting activities. The Post-Award team is responsible for grants accounting activities, including grants setup and maintenance, budget establishment and monitoring, accounts payable and payroll processing, sponsor billing, reporting, and closeout.
Brenda is a Shocker through and through. She obtained her Bachelor of Business Administration/Accounting degree in 1996 and has a 38-year tenure at Wichita State University. She is excited to be immersed in her new position in the Office of Research, where she can support faculty and staff with grant administration. National Institutes of Health (NIH) Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Stimulating Research to Understand and Address Hunger, Food and Nutrition Insecurity
“The purpose of this NOSI is to encourage research on the efficacy of interventions that address nutrition security and the mechanisms of food insecurity on a variety of health outcomes. It also calls for the development of new measures for nutrition security and assessment of food insecurity that are broadly applicable. It was developed by the Office of Nutrition Research (ONR) Implementation Working Group on Nutrition and Health Disparities in collaboration with NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) and Offices in support of the goals and objectives of the Strategic Plan for NIH Nutrition Research.”
National Institutes of Health (NIH) Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Preventive Interventions to Address Cardiometabolic Risk Factors in Populations that Experience Health Disparities
“The purpose of this NOSI is to solicit projects on preventive interventions that address cardiometabolic risk factors in populations that experience health disparities. This NOSI focuses specifically on preventive interventions addressing cardiometabolic risk factors across the lifespan in populations that experience health disparities. Efforts to improve these risk factors should be based on research that identifies and addresses relevant determinants of health at individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and societal levels. As part of proposed prevention interventions, investigators should work in collaboration with appropriate community, service system, and/or healthcare partners to develop and evaluate interventions that are relevant, acceptable, and sustainable in community and service settings. Proposed projects must include an intervention that addresses at least one cardiometabolic risk factor, alone or in combination with other types of risk factors (e.g., smoking, occupational risks), in one or more populations that experience health disparities.”
National Institutes of Health (NIH) Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Increasing Uptake of Evidence-Based Screening in Diverse Populations Across the Lifespan
“The Office of Disease Prevention (ODP) and participating National Institutes of Health (NIH) Institutes, Centers, and Offices (ICs) are issuing this Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) to encourage applications proposing to test multilevel strategies and interventions to improve the uptake of evidence-based screening services across the lifespan and in populations including, but not limited to, those experiencing health disparities and those that are underserved. Studies addressing efficacy, effectiveness, dissemination and implementation research, as well as studies seeking to understand and address barriers to screening are encouraged.”
WSU International Travel Notice
The summer is here, along with loosening international travel restrictions at both the federal and state levels. This has brought a significant upswing in international travel requests.
As a reminder, there are mandatory campus-wide (including all of Industry & Defense Programs) policies regarding practices for international travel. These policies apply to WSU personnel such as students and full- and part-time employees at all levels, as well as independent contractors, and apply if you are:
- Traveling on WSU-related business, research, or funds,
- Traveling with any WSU-owned asset such as laptop or equipment,
- Traveling with plans to connect back to WSU-owned or operated networks, servers, files, or folders,
- Traveling with plans to login or use WSU-owned e-mail while abroad, or
- Traveling which is sponsored in any way by foreign governments, institutions, or entities.
If your international travel falls under one of these above categories, it is required that you submit a travel authorization request through Chrome River and submit a Travel Authorization form to exportcontrols@wichita.edu at least 30 days prior to your planned departure. Last-minute requests cannot be guaranteed for approval. For IDP personnel, please note that you must first receive an approval from the Export Controls & Compliance office prior to your acquiring a loaner laptop from NIAR IT.

What this means for you:
- Protect yourself from criminal and civil liability by declaring all international travel with the Export Control & Compliance Office 30 days before your trip.
- Export Control regulations impact software, email, information, and remote access differently than what most people expect. These processes help ensure we are doing everything the right way and catching relevant instances that may only apply on a case-by-case basis.
- Failure to properly declare travel could mean barring all access while traveling.
