Title: Bridging Grants, Development Research Project Program (DRPP) Awards, Partnerships for Translational Research Training Grants, Postdoctoral Awards
Application Deadline: December 1, 2022 by noon
Purpose: Bridging Grants: A Bridging Grant provides interim support to help a project in Cell and Developmental Biology continue for an eligible investigator who has submitted a grant to NIH that was approved on the basis of scientific merit but fell short of the funding range (applications must have been discussed and include a score to be considered). These funds should assist in providing data needed to submit a revised application to NIH. The resources available have been earmarked exclusively to help an on-going project that has just missed the funding cut-off to keep momentum going until NIH funds are secured.
Developmental Research Project Program (DRPP) Awards: Four junior investigators, each with an experienced mentor, receive $75K to work on a Cell and Developmental Biology project. The desired result is future external funding.
Partnerships for Translational Research Training Awards: Partnership awards are one-year awards offered to facilitate the initiation of clinical/basic science research projects directed toward a translational goal. The awards are meant to support technical assistant salaries together with other research project requirements with the goal of exchanging information, data and technical expertise in a close partnership arrangement.
Postdoctoral Awards: Post-doctoral awards are one-year mentored awards offered for the purpose of facilitating applications to support: (1) initiation of post-doctoral research projects and (2) transition from the post-doctoral position to early investigator status. The awards are meant for partial salary support or research supplies during early or late stages of the post-doctoral experience.

Purpose: “The sustainability movement has reached the business models of nearly every industry in the United States, and many companies, municipalities and states have set aggressive sustainability goals that include how waste streams are being managed. The EREF Board of Directors has set an initiative to ensure research funding reflects EREF’s long-term strategic plan to address all areas of integrated solid waste management, with a strong focus towards research that increased sustainable solid waste management practices.” Note, agricultural wastes (that aren’t handled by the waste industry), nuclear waste, and land applied wastewater treatment sludge are generally not included in the definition of solid waste as used in the RFP.

Purpose: “Environmental pollutants such as pesticides, insecticides, dyes, phenols, endocrine disrupters, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), heavy metals, and nitrogen compounds can have adverse effects on human health even at low concentrations. Efforts are consistently being made to develop reliable and simple sensors to detect pollutants even at low levels. Environmental remediation technologies cover a vast range of applications that require tailored engineering solutions for successful implementation. Technologies applied for the treatment of water, soil, or air involve contaminant degradation or sequestration, and often use related processes such as adsorption or reduction/oxidation (redox) reactions.”

Specifically, this request for applications (RFA) is soliciting research that addresses the following research priorities: 1) How can cost effective stationary, mobile, aerial, and remote sensing technologies be combined to more easily and accurately quantify landfill methane emissions, hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), and other air pollutant emissions from municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills? 2) How can cost effective stationary, mobile, aerial, and remote sensing measurements be used to increase ease of use and evaluate mitigation strategies and technologies to identify best landfill management practices?”
Amount: The EPA anticipates funding approximately 4 (2 regular and 2 early career) awards under this RFA. Requests for amounts in excess of a total of $1,000,000 per regular award and in excess of a total of $600,000 per early career award, including direct and indirect costs, will not be considered. The total project period requested in an application submitted for this RFA may not exceed three years.

Purpose: “The McKnight Scholar Awards are given to exceptional young scientists who are in the early stages of establishing an independent laboratory and research career. The intent of the program is to foster the commitment by these scientists to research careers that will have an important impact on the study of the brain. The program seeks to support scientists committed to mentoring neuroscientists from underrepresented groups at all levels of training. Applicants for the McKnight Scholar Award must demonstrate their ability to solve significant problems in neuroscience, which may include the translation of basic research to clinical practice. They should demonstrate a commitment to an equitable and inclusive lab environment.”
Amount: Each Scholar will receive $75,000 annually in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

They can accomplish this work most effectively through preventive conservation. Preventive conservation encompasses managing relative humidity, temperature, light, and pollutants in collection spaces; providing protective storage enclosures and systems for collections; and safeguarding collections from theft, fire, floods, and other disasters.”

Purpose: “Human Networks and Data Science – Core Research (HNDS-R). Core research proposals will advance theory in a core Social, Behavioral and Economic (SBE) discipline by the application of data and network science methods. This includes the leveraging of large data sets with diverse spatio-temporal scales of measurement and linked qualitative and quantitative approaches, as well as multi-scale, multi-level network data and techniques of network analysis. Supported projects are expected to yield results that will enhance, expand, and transform theory and methods, and that generate novel understandings of human behavior – particularly understandings that can improve the outcomes of significant societal opportunities and challenges. HNDS-R encourages core research proposals that make innovative use of NSF-supported data networks, data bases, centers, and other forms of scientific infrastructure including those developed by HNDS-I (formerly RIDIR) projects.”

“Talk Abstract: While most of us are familiar with simple graphs such as bar charts and scatter plots, data visualization is a wide-ranging and expressive medium that extends beyond dashboards and annual reports. In this talk, I’ll present a broad view of the field, highlighting some of the techniques for exploratory data analysis that go beyond visualizing numbers to look at different kinds of rich data such as text and images. I will discuss storytelling with data, how visualization can help us make sense of some AI systems and, finally, the expressiveness of artistic data visualization. By better understanding the reach and rhetorical power of visualizations, we can empower a wider set of stakeholders to be curious and to reason about data.”

National Institutes of Health (NIH) NIBIB Synthetic Biology Consortium Meeting: December 14, 2022
The Synthetic Biology Consortium meets annually to facilitate important discussions focused on synthetic biology and cultivate a culture of synthetic biology research at the NIH. The 2022 Synthetic Biology Consortium Meeting will continue to facilitate networking and collaboration among synthetic biology investigators and NIH program directors. This year’s meeting will focus on control theory approaches to create robust synthetic biology technologies that are safe and predictable, especially in the context of human health. Prior to this meeting, the Synthetic Biology Consortium will also be hosting four (4) breakouts focused on specific topics within control theory.

21st Annual K-INBRE Symposium: January 14-15, 2023
The purpose of the Kansas INBRE (K-INBRE) is to promote multidisciplinary research networks with a focus on Cell and Developmental Biology; increase the research base and capacity through research support; provide a range of basic science and clinical research opportunities for student trainees; serve as a pipeline for students to continue in health research careers in IDeA states; and enhance science and technology knowledge of the state’s workforce. “Our annual symposium is back in person, and we are excited to bring together students, faculty and staff from our 10 universities in Kansas and Oklahoma!” Note, Wichita State University’s Dr. Haifan Wu is one of the presenters.

Learn to Use BeoShock for your Advanced Research Computing Needs
Wichita State University continues to host Beoshock, a High-performance Computing Cluster (HPC). This HPC is available and free to faculty members, researchers and students engaged in course work or research activities. BeoShock runs the CentOS Linux operating system and features approximately 720 processor cores, two high memory compute nodes with 1.5 terabytes of memory, and four graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerators. BeoShock also has a variety of software tools that may be helpful in your research endeavors, such as Matlab, Mathematica, R, Python and many more.

Office of Research EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT – Fran Cook
Fran Cook joined the WSU Office of Research in 2013, after working in a nonprofit setting for 13 years. She has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Social Work. Fran believes in the power of servant leadership and enjoys helping others to achieve their full potential whether that is through training, applying for external funding or negotiating and reviewing award agreements with researchers at WSU.
In her personal time, Fran enjoys scrapbooking and spending time with her three “boys”: her husband, her teenage son, and their chocolate Labrador. She rarely turns down coffee or tiramisu and finds that wisdom in life can be learned by praying, reading and listening to others. Read more about the Office of Research staff…
Nominations due December 9, 2022 to the Office of Research for Excellence Awards
Nominations for Excellence Awards in Research, Creativity Activity and Community Research are now being accepted by the Office of Research. All full-time faculty, including distinguished professors and endowed chairs, who have served at WSU for at least three years are eligible. Faculty who hold an administrative position above that of chair are not eligible. Previous winners of the award are ineligible to be nominated for a period of five years following the award. Please see the Office of Research website for additional details and nomination forms. Nominations must be received by Friday, December 9, 2022, to be considered.
Analytics for Equity Initiative Pre-Solicitation Notices Are Posted
“The U.S. National Science Foundation is piloting the Analytics for Equity Initiative to support social, economic and behavioral sciences research that leverages federal data and scientific advances in researching equity-related topics for greater public benefit. Led by NSF and in partnership with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the White House Office of Management and Budget and other federal agencies, the initiative links interested researchers directly with federal agencies seeking to answer research questions captured in their learning agendas in equity-related research themes.”

Link Your ORCID ID with Your CITI Account
CITI has made it possible for researchers to connect their ORCID IDs to their CITI Program profiles. An ORCID iD is a permanent numeric identifier that individuals own and control, which provides a way to distinguish themselves uniquely from other researchers and scholars. ORCID iDs are often used in systems and platforms from grant applications to manuscript submissions, and are increasingly required by funders, publishers, data repositories, and other research workflows.

“The purpose of this notice is to inform the extramural research community of implementation details for the NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing (DMS Policy) affecting grant and cooperative agreement applications submitted for receipt dates on or after January 25, 2023. The DMS Policy applies to all NIH research, funded or conducted in whole or in part by NIH, that results in the generation of scientific data.
