Congratulations to those who received grants in November! Thanks to all of their talents and hard work, as of November 30, 2022, WSU researchers under Academic Affairs have submitted proposals budgeting a total of $41,065,018, received $19,294,213 in awards, and generated $1,762,833 in indirect cost recovery thus far for FY2023. However, the last number of IDC recovery will likely change after the new F&A rates have been finalized for an effective date of July 1, 2022, following negotiations with the federal government, as described below in an Announcement.

Office of Research EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT – Linda Steinacher
Linda is a graduate of Friends University and began her career working for American Family Insurance as a Casualty Claim Adjuster for ten years. She then stayed home with her three children for the next ten years. Linda returned to the labor force by working at a roofing company and her church.
Linda joined the WSU Office of Research in 2015 as the IRB/IACUC Assistant working part-time. She moved to full-time in 2018 when she became the IRB/IACUC Administrator. Not many people are familiar with the IRB and IACUC (including Linda prior to coming to WSU). For those of you not familiar, IRB is an acronym that stands for “Institutional Review Board” and it assists researchers with the study of human subjects. IACUC is an acronym for “Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee” and it assists researchers with their study of vertebrate animals. Changes to WSU Indirect Cost Recovery Rates
Negotiations with the federal government on WSU’s new F&A (Facilities and Administration) rates, effective 1 July 2022, are almost complete. We anticipate the following significant changes to the Academic Affairs rates: On Campus Organized Research rate decreasing from the current 48% to a new rate of 40%, the On Campus Other Sponsored Activities rate decreasing from the current 30% to a new rate of 19% and the Off Campus Other Sponsored Activities rate decreasing from the current 26% to a new rate of 17%. We will announce the final rates as soon as they are negotiated. The new rates will impact your proposal and award budgets, as well as the distribution and availability of F&A funds used to support research activities on campus.
National Science Foundation Makes Changes to Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI)
NSF has made several changes to its Major Research Instrumentation Program. Applications for FY24 will now be due between October 15 and November 15, 2023. Thus, WSU is updating its internal competition dates for next year, and Notices of Intent to apply for the FY24 MRI program will be due to proposals@wichita.edu by May 1, 2023 at 12noon. Cost sharing is waived for the next five years, and the maximum allowed under Track 1 has increased to $1,400,000. Finally, the new Track 3 is specifically for proposal requests that “include the acquisition, development, installation, operation and maintenance of equipment and instrumentation to reduce consumption of helium.”

National Institutes of Health (NIH) Request for Information (RFI): Innovative approaches to prevent mental health problems and promote mental wellness in populations that experience health disparities
As part of the NIH ADVANCE: Advancing Prevention Research for Health Equity initiative, this RFI seeks input from a variety of interested parties, including but not limited to healthcare providers/organizations, complementary and integrative health clinical institutions, mental health clinics, mental health advocacy organizations, schools/educational institutions, community- and faith-based organizations, state or local governmental organizations, and researchers, on practical and innovative interventions or programs that contribute to the primary or secondary prevention of mental health problems and promotion of mental health wellness in populations that experience health disparities. Input from community-based service providers and other community-based organizations about promising or successful approaches in their communities is particularly encouraged. Of additional particular interest are interventions that move beyond the provision of mental health treatment to encompass strategies that address social determinants of health that operate as risk or protective factors for psychological distress and the development of mental health problems. The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) announced its intent to issue a funding opportunity announcement that will establish a regional network of Technical Assistance Partnerships (TAPs) to help industrial facilities and other large energy users increase the adoption of onsite energy technologies. Clean onsite energy technologies provide a practical alternative to generating electricity and heat from fossil fuels and produce flexible, reliable, and affordable energy that reduces emissions across the industrial sector.

Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP) Stakeholder Request for Information
The PRCRP is soliciting input regarding the Quality of Life (QoL) and psychosocial aspects of cancer care (diagnosis/treatment/transition to survivorship and beyond) to better understand the most critical questions that need to be addressed. The PRCRP seeks responses from scientists, clinicians, cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers in the topic areas funded by PRCRP (see below). Information received will be considered in the development of strategic planning initiatives. Responses are due January 31, 2023.

REMINDER - Link Your ORCID ID with Your CITI Account
CITI has made it possible for researchers to connect their ORCID IDs to their CITI Program profiles. An ORCID ID is a permanent numeric identifier that individuals own and control, which provides a way to distinguish themselves uniquely from other researchers and scholars. ORCID IDs are often used in systems and platforms from grant applications to manuscript submissions, and are increasingly required by funders, publishers, data repositories, and other research workflows.
