Congratulations to those who received grants in December! So far this fiscal year, WSU’s AA researchers proposed $39,032,755 in funding, were awarded $55,998,140 and generated $2,058,599 in indirect cost recovery.
You will find a spotlight on Traci Shepherd in the announcements section. Traci is a Research Grant Administrator on the Post-Award team. Please also note in the announcements section that the Office of Research webpage now posts quarterly newsletters from the national EPSCoR/IDeA Coalition; Kansas is an EPSCoR state. For The Delfin opportunity announced last month, the list of potential faculty mentors is now closed for Summer 2024, but will become available again and grow in subsequent years. This is an opportunity to mentor undergraduate research students from Latin American countries for seven weeks during the summer, and potentially recruit them to your research group and/or WSU when they graduate.
We wish you much success in your research efforts over the next month.

WSU Office of Research Workshops on National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Proposals: January through August (due August 21, 2024) – First Session: February 8, 2024 at 2pm in Jardine Hall Room 405
A common first step in establishing an NSF research center is to demonstrate success with an REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) Site in the field of interest. REU Sites are also helpful in recruiting graduate students. Vice Provost Coleen Pugh and any interested teams will coordinate and work on their proposals for submission in 2024, following a similar approach used in 2023, to separate NSF divisions. Our first session of the year will include feedback from teams that submitted under the previous cycle.
Email funding@wichita.edu to express interest in attending this NSF REU Workshop series and to craft a proposal to NSF due in August.
WSU Office of Research Workshops on National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Traineeship (NRT) Program Proposals: January through August
The NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) program seeks proposals that explore ways for graduate students in research-based master’s and doctoral degree programs to develop the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed to pursue a range of STEM careers. The program is dedicated to effective training of STEM graduate students in high priority interdisciplinary or convergent research areas, through a comprehensive traineeship model that is innovative, evidence-based, and aligned with changing workforce and research needs. Proposals are requested that address any interdisciplinary or convergent research theme of national priority, as noted above.” In addition to providing exceptional graduate training, the NSF NRT can be a useful step in establishing an NSF research center in a convergent field. An informational session was held on January 25, 2024, and Vice Provost Coleen Pugh and any interested teams will coordinate and work on their proposals each month for the submission deadline of September 6, 2024.

Traci graduated from WSU with a Bachelor’s in Psychology and after working in the nonprofit mental health field for 10 years, she was ready for a change and decided to switch career paths. She went back to school and earned both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting from Friends University. Traci is a mom of two young adult daughters and one teenage son. She recently adopted a very energic rescue dog who keeps her busy with endless walks and trips to the dog park. In her spare time, Traci enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling to new places with her fiancé, reading, and shopping for a great deal. ARPA-H Health Care Rewards to Achieve Improved Outcomes (HEROES) Seeking Letters of Interest by February 29, 2024
“Submission of an LOI is not required to submit an abstract and/or proposal to the HEROES Program Solicitation. Rather, the information provided will be used to gauge program interest, inform program planning and design, and foster a community of potential entities interested in being a part of the HEROES program. In addition, the submission of your LOI will ensure you stay up to date on key program deadlines, events, and the release of the Outcomes Toolkit. HEROES aims to trial and validate a radically different approach to creating preventative care incentives in the health market. This approach involves offering direct payments to individual “health catalysts” – such as non-profits or care consortiums – that successfully implement preventative care campaigns that improve the rates for specific health harms in an entire geographic population.”

National Institutes of Health (NIH) Notice: Topic Areas of Interest for Joint NIH/NSF Science of Science Approach to Analyzing and Innovating the Biomedical Research Enterprise (SoS:BIO) Program
“NIH seeks fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and applies that knowledge to optimize health and prevent or reduce illness for all people. NSF promotes the progress of science by maintaining the general health of research and education across all fields of science and engineering. Both agencies have identified opportunities and needs in building and supporting research projects with a focus on understanding the scientific research enterprise. Consequently, NIGMS and the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Directorate within the NSF have established a joint initiative to support a Science of Science Approach to Analyzing and Innovating the Biomedical Research Enterprise.”

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Partnering Platform Launched
“The SBIR Partnering Platform was launched in October 2023. The public, self-supporting platform facilitates partnering between DOE small business applicants and awardees (INNOVATORS) and various industry stakeholders (i.e., investors, service providers, utilities, etc.) in their representative ecosystems (PARTNERS). Using keywords and AI searching, INNOVATORS can identify and connect with PARTNERS to support their R&D efforts during their award (Subject Matter Experts, Collaborators and Subcontractors) as well as industry stakeholders (investors, service providers, utilities, etc.) to assist them with commercialization of their DOE SBIR/STTR funded technologies. INNOVATORS can search for open SBIR/STTR funding opportunities from any federal agency, and network with other INNOVATORS. Although designed to highlight technologies developed with DOE SBIR/STTR funding, INNOVATORS and PARTNERS from any ecosystem will find value by joining the community.”
