Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tools and Resources Webinar Series: Nutrient Explorer: March 13, 2024

“Excess nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) in lakes can lead to eutrophication, hypoxia, and algal blooms that may harm aquatic life and people. Some U.S. states have established numeric water quality criteria for nutrients to protect surface waters. However, monitoring to determine if criteria are being met is limited by resources and time. EPA’s Nutrient Explorer can help managers locate and prioritize areas where nutrients in surface waters are predicted to exceed certain water quality thresholds.   Nutrient Explorer is a downloadable tool for modeling relationships between watershed land use, climate, and other variables and surface water nutrient concentrations. This interactive application allows users to explore spatial patterns and temporal trends in surface water nutrient datasets and can be applied by decision makers to different locations and surface water bodies to identify the most influential drivers of excess nutrient concentrations and to prioritize watersheds for restoration.”  Note, other upcoming webinars in this series include “Tire Crumb Research” and “Wildfires.”

National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Cancer Institute (NCI) Conference: New Frontiers in Liquid Biopsies: Data, Technology and Translational Potential: May 13-14, 2024

“Building on the foundation of cell-free DNA prenatal testing, the field of liquid biopsy research has rapidly evolved, with uses spanning from early detection of cancer and monitoring of organ transplants. Unlike traditional biopsy methods that require invasive procedures to obtain tissue samples, liquid biopsies use simpler methods to detect disease markers, including cells themselves, in different biofluids, including blood, urine, and even cerebral spinal fluid. This less invasive approach allows for repeated monitoring over time.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Office of Research EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT – Brandon Schneider

“Hello everyone! My name is Brandon Schneider and I joined the Office of Research in October 2022 as the Grants Coordinator on the Pre-Award team. I’ve been with the University for seven years now in various roles, but really feel like I’ve found my home with my Pre-Award colleagues. In 2018 I graduated magna cum laude with my Bachelor’s degree in Communication. In 2021 I achieved a lifelong goal by obtaining my Master’s degree in Communication. Away from the office, I love spending time with my family, playing with my kids, adding to my growing vinyl record collection, watching my beloved Colorado Avalanche hockey team, and catching up on movie/TV show recommendations.”  Read more about the Office of Research staff…

Two Separate Routing Forms Now Required for Project Submissions

The Office of Research has implemented the use of two separate routing forms for each sponsored project submission.  Two routing forms will now be required: a compliance routing form and a budget routing form.  The goal is to obtain more compliance information early in the proposal process, initiating any research compliance discussions that need to take place prior to submission.  The compliance routing form requires information about items such as export/import, protected health or identifying information, foreign collaborations, human and animal subjects research, and hazardous materials.

Thank you in advance for your assistance with these new forms.  Email proposals@wichita.edu with any questions about routing form changes.

Through the S-I-R Program, institutions host a scholar from outside of the United States for a semester or full academic year to teach courses, assist in curriculum development, guest lecture, develop study abroad/exchange partnerships and engage with the campus and the local community. S-I-Rs work across departments and curricula in a variety of ways to widely enhance or expand an existing international program, develop new world area studies programs, add an international dimension to existing coursework or provide an opportunity for U.S. students to learn about a particular world region or country.”  Note, two upcoming webinars about the S-I-R program will be held on March 12 and May 3, 2024.  See website for more details.
