The End of an Era: Mr. Charlie Vester Jenkins
Mr. Charlie Jenkins, the doyen of Wichita State University TRIO Upward Bound Wichita Prep Program (UBWP) passed away peacefully on September 20, 2015. Having served the UBWP for 43 years in various capacities, Mr. Jenkins was an ardent supporter of college access programs for low-income and first generation students. He was a beloved Saturday sessions coordinator, and a government teacher for generations of UBWP students.
Mr. Jenkins was a teacher of Government, American History and Black Studies with USD 259 Wichita Public Schools. His expertise in the area allows him to be the U.S. Government instructor for the 6-week summer residential program each year. This course is offered for credit and is approved by the Wichita Public Schools.
"UBWP has experienced a great loss," said Ms. Rhonda Hicks, program director. "I have been honored to serve with Mr. Jenkins and work with him for 15 years. He is and was the best male role model, and role model in general for our students and for all of us."
