First-Year Advising

All new students coming straight from high school to WSU will no longer have to schedule a separate appointment during the end of your senior year or summer to enroll in classes. WSU will take care of it for you!

Once you have completed the RSVP for Orientation, your personalized schedule will be sent to you to view electronically. If you have any questions or changes to request, you will be able to ask your advisor to contact you. If you confirm you like your schedule, you are officially enrolled! We will see you at Orientation, where the First Year Advisors and Academic College Advisors will partner to make sure you have all the information you need to succeed here at WSU.

First-Year Advising FAQ

What are the benefits of First-Year Advising?

The greatest benefit of First-Year Advising is that students no longer need to make a separate visit to campus in order to enroll in classes. The only time you will need to come to WSU before the semester starts is to attend your Orientation session. A custom class schedule will be created for you within one to two weeks of filling out the RSVP for Orientation.

Students will meet their advisor during Orientation and learn about their program and the processes of WSU.

First-Year Advisors are also able to help with all aspects of campus life, not just the academics. We can help with questions about financial aid, housing, billing, transcripts, registration, and much more!

Will I do First-Year Advising?

All new students who are coming to WSU straight from high school will participate in First-Year Advising.

Who will be my First-Year Advisor?

Students are assigned an advisor based on their major/college at WSU.

How does First-Year Advising work?

When you RSVP for Orientation, you will fill out an additional set of questions specific to you that will help your advisor build a class schedule for your first semester. After completing the questionnaire, you will be sent your schedule within one to two weeks and the instructions to confirm that schedule via your myWSU portal.

If you have any questions or changes to request, you will be able to ask your advisor to contact you to make changes. If you confirm that you like your schedule, you are officially enrolled! We will see you at Orientation, where the First-Year Advisors and Academic College Advisors will partner to make sure you have all the information you need to succeed here at WSU.

How is this different from other advising?

Previously, all students were required to meet with an Academic College Advisor before they could enroll in classes. Some students, especially those finishing high school, found it difficult to find time during the week to come to campus for this appointment.

By implementing First-Year Advising, we are enabling students to enroll in classes much sooner and without the extra step of the advising appointment. Students will still get all the program and class information when they come for their Orientation session.

What if I have questions about First-Year Advising?

If you have any questions about advising or your first year at WSU, please call us at 316-978-3909 or email your First-Year Advisor.
