Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) is a U.S. federal program that forgives the remaining balance on eligible federal student loans after you:
- Government organizations (federal, state, local, tribal)
- Most nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status
- Payments generally must be made under an eligible repayment plan while working for a qualifying employer.
- The 120 payments do not need to be consecutive.
- Some older federal loans may need to be consolidated into a Direct Consolidation Loan first.
Once the 120 qualifying payments are completed, the remaining loan balance is forgiven tax-free under current federal law.
