Dr. Sarah Deer's lecture: "Sovereignty of the Soul: Confronting Sexual Violence in Native America," will give us an opportunity to learn about the crisis of interpersonal and sexual violence in Native America.
Dr. Deer is a citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma and a professor at the University of Kansas, where she has a dual appointment in the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Department and the School of Public Affairs and Administration. Her scholarship focuses on the intersection of Federal Indian law and feminism. Her 2015 book, The Beginning and End of Rape, has received several awards, including the best first book award from the Native American Indigenous Studies Association. Professor Deer was named a MacArthur fellow in 2014 and was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame alongside Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor in 2019. She also serves as the Chief Justice for the Prairie Island Indian Community Court of Appeals.
7th Annual Gender & Sexuality Conference
Each year, the Department of Sociology at Wichita State University works with several co-sponsors to organize and host a conference showcasing the gender and sexuality related scholarship happening across our state. The goal of the conference is to highlight scholarly and creative work of students, faculty, staff, and community partners around gender and/or sexuality issues and to provide an opportunity to network across departments and universities within Kansas. The conference is free and open to students, faculty, staff, and interested community members.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion is proud to present the Diversity Lecture Series, a series that features distinguished leaders and experts to inspire campus dialogue, community engagement and learning about the national narrative on diversity and inclusion. The speakers include scholars, thought leaders and diversity professionals whose research, scholarship, leadership and advocacy enhance the university's efforts to present diverse ideas, perspectives and viewpoints to inspire greater understanding and appreciation for diversity and inclusion.
