Meet Whitney McKenzie
A junior transfer student from Wichita, Whitney is studying integrated marketing communications. She’s involved in the Public Relations Student Society, Love Your Melon, and a Shockers basketball fan. Learn more about Whitney and why she chose Wichita State.
What has been your favorite experience at Wichita State so far?
Getting to know the people here; everyone is so nice here and I transferred from
KU and I haven't run into one person who’s not willing to start a conversation. Also,
being in the Elliott School of Communication is great because everyone is nice and
the teachers are helpful.
What organizations or activities are you involved with at WSU?
I’m involved with the Public Relations Student Society of America here at WSU. Meghan
Carver, the president of that organization, got me into the group. I’m also a Love
Your Melon representative here. They had that group at KU and I got involved in that
when I was there.
Where is your favorite spot to hang out on campus?
The third floor of the RSC because it’s quiet and no one usually goes up there, so
if I have a break I’ll just go up there and sit. I don't always like being around
crowds, so it’s quiet and nice up there.
Who is a faculty or staff member at WSU that has had a positive impact on you?
Eric Wilson because he is always asking if I need any help or encouragement. He knows
my background story and he’s had a really big influence on me here. He’s a positive
person I can go to; he reads my resume and cover letters and really wants me to do
well.
What’s your favorite part of campus life at Wichita State?
Probably sitting at the RSC because I feel like so many people hang out here and
they come here to meet their friends. I feel like this is the main spot where students
go. But I also love the Wichita State basketball games. They’re another favorite part
of campus life because those are fun.
What are you currently reading or watching that you are enjoying?
Longmire on Netflix. My family is watching it right now. It’s kind of cheesy, but
it’s a country western mystery. It lets your brain relax for a little bit and you
get lost in the show.
Why did you choose to attend Wichita State?
I went to KU first, got a little homesick, and had some reasons I had to come back
here. So I came back and I’ve never been happier. I love Wichita State. It’s so nice
and you’re more focused and more driven. At KU, it was everyone would go do their
homework, but why? Or everyone would be studying for a test, but why? Here, you have
a purpose and people are willing to help you. You realize that you need to get a job,
so you need to do well in school. Wichita State has been way more helpful and have
a goal for you as a student.
