SSS Peer Mentor

!! WE ARE NOW HIRING PEER MENTORS !!

An effort is made to select students who are sensitive to peer needs, are aware of the problems facing first generation and limited income students, and can serve as paraprofessionals and role models for academic success. Peer Mentors are responsible for the delivery of mentoring services to SSS participants on a one-on-one basis. Peer Mentors report to the Project Director and have continuous dialogue with the student’s academic advisor.

Duties:

Attending all Peer Mentoring training sessions at the beginning of each semester.
Checking your email inbox on a regular basis for updates to your schedule, new trainings, or other pertinent information.
Providing weekly mentoring to students assigned to you based upon the training you’ve been given.
Assisting in the development of positive study habits, study skills, and life skills of mentored students.
Providing regular feedback to the SSS Project Director and Academic Advisors on your student’s mentoring progress.
Completing and submitting your assessments and web timesheets electronically by the due date as required. (If you do not submit any assessments required and/or do not submit your time and hours worked in a timely manner, there is no guarantee that you will be paid retroactively.)
Contributing to the continuous improvement of the quality of the mentoring process.
Actively participating in related activities of the Peer Mentoring component to achieve the objectives and goals of Student Support Services.

Requirements:

Enrolled as a sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student at WSU
Have a cumulative 3.0 GPA or better

Preferred Skills:

Trained in techniques and goals of the mentoring relationships
Ability to serve as a positive role model for SSSP students
Ability to communicate effectively and establish positive relationships
A demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of economically and educationally disadvantaged
A strong commitment to the project’s mission of serving disadvantaged students
