Voluntary COVID-19 testing available

Wichita State University is making voluntary COVID-19 testing available for all currently enrolled WSU students, faculty and staff.

What you need to know

Testing is done by appointment ONLY.
Appointments are required because the collection process must be observed by a trained observer.
Do not eat, drink, smoke, vape, chew gum or brush your teeth for 30 minutes prior to your appointment time.
Testing is completely voluntary – there is no obligation to participate.
Testing is free of charge
The test is conducted by collecting a saliva sample.
You must bring your WSU ID card when you come for your appointment.
You will be provided instructions on how to access your testing results.

Why is the university choosing to conduct voluntary testing?

Voluntary testing is part of the university’s multi-pronged strategy to monitor and mitigate the spread of COVID-19 on campus.  Because COVID-19 infection is often asymptomatic, early identification of individuals with the virus requires testing to monitor – and respond to – any potential spread among the on-campus WSU community. This voluntary testing program allows the university to monitor and address real-time trends and burden of the disease to make timely decisions for intervention and response.

Are all students eligible to participate?

Yes.

Where is the testing being conducted?

COVID-19 testing is administered through Student Health Services. Appointments are required and can be scheduled online through the myShockerHealth portal. Follow the portal link found at wichita.edu/shs. Login with your Shocker ID and select “Appointments” from the menu.

Test samples will be analyzed by the Wichita State University Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory. Results are typically available in 24 to 48 hours. You will be provided instructions on how to access your test results during sample collection.

Will students have to pay for tests ordered under the voluntary program?

No. All testing for the voluntary program is being provided free of charge.

Will the test results from the voluntary program be reported on the university’s COVID-19 Dashboard?

Yes, results will be posted on the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard.

What if I test positive?

Students who live in Shocker Hall, The Flats or The Suites: If you test positive, you will need to contact your resident assistant if you live on campus. You will be temporarily relocated to designated isolation housing. But if you are able to isolate at your permanent residence, you are encouraged to do so. You will also need to contact your professors by phone or email, informing them that you are ill and unable to attend class. Student Health Services will follow up with students who test positive.

Students who live off campus: If you test positive, you will need to self-isolate in your residence. You will need to contact your professors by phone or email, informing them that you are ill and unable to attend class. Student Health Services may follow up with students who test positive.

Are faculty and staff eligible to participate?
