First-Year Student Services

Because we are committed to help students get a successful start to the semester, we plan and organize the following experiences that our first-year students participate in. All of these resources and events will help you make the most of your first year.

Cohort Enrollment
Students who enroll in cohort courses will be in two classes with mostly the same group of students. This type of linked course enrollment is proven to help students succeed in the courses, develop a common academic experience with peers, and contribute to a smoother academic and social transition to college. Talk to your academic advisor during enrollment if interested in enrolling in cohort courses.

Honors College
The Honors College at Wichita State University aims to prepare students for innovative intellectual, creative and professional work in a complex society. For information on benefits, requirement and the application process, visit the Honors College at wichita.edu/honors.

Living Learning Communities (LLC)
An LLC is a group of students who choose to live together on campus to expand their education through shared learning experience that goes beyond the classroom. Students enjoy a built in support system, personal attention and mentoring, leadership opportunities and an enhanced sense of community. If interested in participating in an LLC, visit the Housing and Residence Life website at wichita.edu/housing.

Transition Mentor Program
As a new freshmen, you will be assigned to a Transition Mentor during Orientation who will also continue to mentor you through your first semester as a Shocker. Special opportunities are planned for students who participate. You will receive more information from your Transition Mentor after Orientation at the beginning of the semester.

Multicultural Mentoring Program
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion’s signature program, the Multicultural Student Mentoring Program (MSMP), facilitates the retention, academic success, holistic development and timely graduation of all minority and first generation students. Our program provides FREE tutoring services, group study sessions, peer and professional mentoring, community service opportunities, and academic and career development workshops. For more information contact the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at 316-978-3034, by email at natalie.toney@wichita.edu or visit wichita.edu/msmp.

Academic Support
New students are encouraged to seek academic assistance in classes if needed. If you believe you will need some extra help in your classes, explore the numerous services offered such as tutoring and Supplemental Instruction. You can find a list of free existing resources, or request a tutor from the Office of Student Success at wichita.edu/success. Preference is given to lower-division general education courses.

Seminar topics cover a broad range of issues and will include elements that engage students in our community of learners and teach successful student and life skills.
