From Pre-Production to Post-Graduate: Jordan Devoy’s Applied Learning Experience

Jordan Devoy is a Fine Arts alumna, who majored in filmmaking and graduated in December 2025. Before earning her bachelor’s degree in media arts with a filmmaking concentration, she had on-the-job training at Shocker Studios. Devoy gained experience in solo and collaborative projects throughout the production process. As a studio videographer, she shot and edited videos for Shocker Studios and its clients.

As a studio videographer, Devoy primarily handled production for Shocker Studios’ social media and live event videos. Devoy had opportunities to shoot and edit client projects and commercials that Shocker Studios contracts as a production facility. Other projects included video promotion for the school and behind-the-scenes content.

In these varying projects and production levels, Devoy advanced her professional skills.

Devoy’s camera operation, lighting and editing skills were further developed in this role. She also enriched her interpersonal skills by collaborating with creatives with various experience levels, such as students, faculty and staff. Other soft skills were fostered, such as time and stress management and adaptability.

“I have learned how to work as a solo social media videographer, and produce content individually from pre-production through post-production, on consistent deadlines,” Devoy said.

This experience was built on Devoy’s previous creative endeavors.

Since January 2025, she has been a camera operator for the Preserving Kansas Prairie Documentary Team. From January 2024 to September 2025, she was a student worker for Shocker Studios Equipment Room. She combined her filmmaking and marketing education at Promo Solutions at Wichita State as a social media content creator. Between February 2023 and February 2024, Devoy managed its social media accounts and created content including graphics, short-form videos and product photos.

Devoy’s role at Shocker Studio built her future in filmmaking.

“I feel more confident in my ability to create videos for social media, clients and brands!” Devoy said. “I’ve helped with some professional shoots outside of school, and I look forward to working with future clients in a better way from this experience.”

This experience also drew from her background in marketing.

“This experience ties perfectly with my marketing minor, as it allows me to practice producing content specifically tailored for social platforms — something that isn’t always easy to do on larger-scale film projects,” Devoy said.

The Applied Learning Fund provided Devoy with a job at Shocker Studios in a videographer role that helps her gain experience and credibility.

“This job is exactly the type of role I will be looking for after graduation, so being able to learn and get paid through this experience is awesome,” Devoy said.

Wichita State's applied learning program gives students hands-on, paid experience with industry partners, helping them build careers before graduation.
