Mary Elliott is pursuing degrees in audio production and guitar. Through an applied learning experience, she works as a recording studio technician for Shocker Studios. Shocker Studios is a state-of-the-art production that fosters collaboration among students, faculty, and industry professionals.
Wichita State University School of Digital Arts recently acquired the Somewhere Works studio facility in Old Town Wichita, creating even more opportunities for students through expanded studio space and industry experiences.
As a studio technician, Mary helps create an environment where music and digital arts students can collaborate and create together.
“As both an audio and music student, this opportunity is especially cool for me to be able to take my skills in both fields and use them in a way that helps others,” Mary said.
Her position involves a wide variety of responsibilities. These responsibilities include checking equipment inventory, troubleshooting recording studios, assisting with classes, and helping maintain the facility.
“What's unique and beneficial about this particular applied learning position is the extensive real-life experience I'm able to get regarding what it would be like running a recording studio of my own,” Mary said. “I'm able to get an inside look not only at the necessary equipment and technology required for a studio but also see the business side of running a space such as this.”
Although she has only been in this position for a few months, Mary has already gained valuable experience that will help her in her future career. From recording sessions to maintaining a professional studio and understanding the business side of the industry, Mary feels better prepared for her future career.
Mary looks forward to the experience and knowledge she will gain as she continues with Shocker Studios.
“I am incredibly grateful that I've been given this opportunity from Wichita State and the State of Kansas Applied Learning funds,” Mary said.
Wichita State's applied learning program gives students hands-on, paid experience with industry partners, helping them build careers before graduation.
