Mary Elliott is pursuing degrees in audio production and guitar at Wichita State University. As a recording studio technician at Shocker Studios, she puts skills from both fields to work while helping other students create.
“As both an audio and music student, this opportunity is especially cool for me to be able to take my skills in both fields and use them in a way that helps others,” Mary said.
Mary checks equipment inventory, troubleshoots issues in the recording studios, assists with classes and helps maintain the facility. The work gives her a closer look at what it takes to operate a professional studio.
“What's unique and beneficial about this particular applied learning position is the extensive real-life experience I'm able to get regarding what it would be like running a recording studio of my own,” Mary said. “I'm able to get an inside look not only at the necessary equipment and technology required for a studio but also see the business side of running a space such as this.”
Through recording sessions and day-to-day studio operations, Mary is gaining experience she can draw on in her future career. She looks forward to continuing her work with Shocker Studios.
“I am incredibly grateful that I've been given this opportunity from Wichita State and the State of Kansas Applied Learning funds,” Mary said.
Wichita State's applied learning program gives students hands-on, paid experience with industry partners, helping them build careers before graduation.
