Khushi Choudhary's Applied Learning Experience: Developing Experience through Wichita State University

Khushi Choudhary, a junior majoring in health management, is gaining valuable professional experience as a student assistant with the Kansas Small Business Development Center (KSBDC) at Wichita State University. The KSBDC supports small business leaders as they work toward their goals and contribute to the region’s economic growth.

As her first professional position, the experience has been especially meaningful for Khushi. She assists with business plans, organizational initiatives and other projects designed to help small businesses thrive.

“Coming from a healthcare background, I have always been interested in understanding how systems, leadership and management impact patient care and organizational success,” Khushi said.

Working in a professional environment has helped Khushi strengthen skills in communication, time management and organization while learning to manage responsibilities and collaborate confidently with colleagues.

“These skills are directly applicable to my future career in healthcare management, where collaboration and effective communication are critical,” she said.

Khushi has also gained a greater appreciation for planning, attention to detail and adaptability. Through her work with business planning and event management, she has seen how problem-solving and teamwork contribute to successful outcomes.

One of her most meaningful experiences was helping organize an artificial intelligence pitch competition.

“It was an incredible opportunity to observe and participate in how an event is planned, coordinated and successfully executed,” Khushi said. “I learned a lot from this experience and gained valuable exposure to real-world event management.”

Khushi credits Brandy Willett, KSBDC regional director and her supervisor, with providing guidance and mentorship throughout her experience. Willett also supported Khushi’s opportunity to attend the 2026 American College of Healthcare Executives Congress on Healthcare Leadership in Houston.

At the conference in March, Khushi participated in educational sessions, networking events and professional development opportunities that broadened her understanding of healthcare leadership. The experience gave her greater insight into professional expectations and workplace dynamics while reinforcing her interest in pursuing a career in healthcare management.

Khushi is also expanding her leadership experience on campus. She recently became president of HEALTH — Health Education Advocates for Leadership, Teamwork and Humanity — a Wichita State student organization. Although she is new to the position, the role reflects her commitment to developing as a leader and becoming more involved in the university community.

Applied learning funding provided through the State of Kansas has supported Khushi’s education while allowing her to participate more fully in hands-on learning and professional development.

“The funding helped ease my financial responsibilities, allowing me to focus more on gaining hands-on experience and fully engaging in my internship,” Khushi said. “It also made it possible for me to participate in professional opportunities that I may not have been able to otherwise.”

Through her work with the KSBDC, Khushi is building the confidence, leadership abilities and practical management skills she will carry into her future career in healthcare.
