Statement from the Committee Diversity, Empowerment and Inclusion

The Diversity, Empowerment and Inclusion Committee of the Student Government Association of Wichita State University is aware of the incident which occurred at the Kappa-ture the Flag event on Saturday, Sept. 14. We believe it is our job as the committee tasked with protecting minority communities on campus to speak out about issues of bias on campus.

In maintaining our stated purpose of advocating on behalf of the underrepresented students at Wichita State University; we condemn the alleged actions and words said by the accused individual at the Kappa-ture the Flag event. We do not condone any act of bias or discrimination, regardless of intent.

We commend the Renegade Rho Beta Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity, Inc. for their courage to stand up for their values and do what they felt was right for their members. We stand with the Renegade Rho Beta Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity Inc, the Multicultural Greek Counsel and any underserved student on campus.

It is our job as a representative body to ensure incidents of bias and discrimination do not occur. We extend an invitation to members of underserved communities to share their concerns with the Committee so we may take the necessary steps to change any toxic rhetoric used on campus. We want to reiterate our purpose as a resource to underserved students at Wichita State University.

The Diversity, Empowerment and Inclusion Committee would like the highlight the other resources on campus available to students to report incidents of this kind: wichita.edu/reportit; the CARE team; the Office of Diversity and Inclusion; the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance; Cut H8; the Student Advocate; and the University Police Department.

We look forward to seeing progress on campus and encourage students and faculty to maintain their passion and energy on topics of diversity and inclusion on campus and in the community.
