AJ Haynes exemplifies leadership through action. As president of his fraternity and an active member of student government, he has guided peers with integrity while advocating for student needs across campus. Haynes also volunteers at a local juvenile detention center, teaching youth how to play chess. Throughout nearly four years at Wichita State, he has worked to create opportunities and support systems that amplify the voices of all.
Kailene Vea-Spencer, president of the Black Student Union, demonstrates a strong commitment
to service and community building. She leads monthly service initiatives, collaborates
with other student organizations and holds open office hours to mentor students. Vea-Spencer
also develops programs that support academic and professional growth, including financial
literacy workshops in partnership with community organizations, reflecting her dedication
to both leadership and student success.
"AJ and Kailene embody the heart of the Drum Major Award. Leading not for recognition, but to serve and uplift others. Their dedication to mentorship, advocacy and community engagement leaves a lasting impact on Wichita State and the city around us."
- Gabriel Fonseca, Executive Director
