Hundreds mourn President John Bardo

Hundreds of members of the Wichita State University campus community turned out Monday, March 18, to honor and mourn President John Bardo. Dr. Bardo died Tuesday, March 12, at Wesley Medical Center after a long illness. He was 70 years old. Following a private service, Dr. Bardo took one last ride through the campus he dearly loved. The funeral procession paused at five locations throughout the university as students, faculty, staff and community members stood solemnly in observation. Dr. Bardo was the 13th president of Wichita State. His legacy is one of an effective, vibrant agent of change—one who outlined the path to a bold, audacious new future for the university and the city of Wichita.

The route

President Bardo's funeral procession drove through campus on the way from his private funeral services to his burial. The motorcade entered and exited campus from 17th Street as a salute to Dr. Bardo’s interest in the Fairmount neighborhood south of 17th, and his joy in the realization of the Experiential Engineering Building, which opened in January 2017, launching a wave of construction. The procession moved north through Innovation Campus and then circled around and through the traditional campus, pausing briefly near Marcus Welcome Center, Wiedemann Hall, the 1970 Memorial, NIAR and the Rhatigan Student Center. The pause along Yale Walkway near Neff Hall was in honor of the Bardos meeting in Neff Hall in 1974 and marrying in 1975.
