Pep Rally and bonfire set for today (Monday, Oct. 29)
Wichita State will tip off the college basketball season with a pep rally and bonfire
at Braeburn Square today (Monday, Oct. 29). This family-friendly, all ages, free event
is set for 6:30 p.m.
The event will feature special appearances by the men's and women's basketball teams, spirit
squad, WuShock, Shocker Sound and Coaches Gregg Marshall and Keitha Adams.
Food trucks will be on hand for dinner and include LumpiaPalooza, LoLo's Crepes, The
Brown Box Bakery and Drink Local Truck.

Win $100 for your student organization by attending the Shocker Pep Rally from 6:30-8 p.m. today (Monday, Oct. 29) at Braeburn Square.
Student groups with more than 50 percent of their membership at the event will be entered into a drawing for a cash prize. Check-in at the Braeburn Square Shocker Store from 6:30-7 p.m. for eligibility.

The Campus Traditions Committee had a great Shocktoberfest week! Thank you to all of our student organizations, groups and judges who participated.
After a grueling week of competitions, our winners were announced at Songfest 2018. The overall winners of Shocktoberfest follow:

Parking advisory
All SASO parking lots (see map at Wichita.edu/parking – Athletic Parking) will close at 4 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 30) for a home basketball game. A text alert will be send as a reminder, too.
On Friday, Nov. 2, 150 parking stalls on the west side of Koch Arena will be blocked off for Black and Yellow Day.
Gifts from Cargill, Capitol Federal add $1.75 million to business building campaign
Two companies, Cargill and Capitol Federal®, have contributed a total of $1.75 million to the campaign to build a new home for the W. Frank Barton School of Business, taking the amount raised so far to $28.5 million.
Cargill pledged $1 million to the WSU Foundation for the project and Capitol Federal Foundation® committed $750,000.
WSU Foundation President and CEO Elizabeth King announced the gifts Thursday night, Oct. 25, at the President's Club celebration, held each year to recognize some of Wichita State's most generous supporters.
Message from President Bardo: Pride, humility, awe and joy
This may be a bit sentimental, but I want to share my feelings after extensive visits around campus last week.
I used my new mobility scooter, freshly clad in Shocker yellow and black, to go from Morrison Hall to the Experiential Engineering Building to Koch Arena, Rhatigan Student Center and points in between.
I stopped by offices, talked with staff and students and visited 10 or so buildings. I watched the women's basketball practice, had lunch with students, had a chance to talk with old friends and see pictures of a proud grandpa's grandbaby.
Because of the busy schedule, this all came in a rush and made a stream of impressions. I was overwhelmed with feelings of pride, humility, awe and joy all at the same time, because of what we have been able to do together.
I am writing this note simply to say “thank you.” Thank you for the intelligence, energy, hard work and caring for others that you bring to campus every day. What is more, the best is yet to come.
Whether you are a student, faculty, staff member or innovation partner, thank you for doing your part in making this university worthy of the people we serve. Thanks to you, we have a university we can all be proud of. You make it a GREAT DAY TO BE A SHOCKER!

Nov. 1 Town Hall to feature the value of a liberal arts and sciences education
Come to the Town Hall at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the CAC Theater for Fairmount College's town hall dedicated entirely to discussing the value of a liberal arts and sciences education.
The participants include Robert Litan, a nonresident senior fellow at Brookings Institution, as moderator.
Panelists are:
- Jean Griffith, associate professor, department of English, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
- Debbie Haynes, retired family physician and chair of the WSU Foundation Board
- Eric F. Melgren, United States District Judge, District of Kansas
- Jay Price, professor and chair, Department of History, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
The last 15 minutes of the program will be open to audience questions. A wine and cheese reception will take place after the town hall.
Please encourage your students to attend; you might consider awarding extra credit for their attendance. This event is also open to the public.
Shockers win team title, Koskei takes individual
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Winny Koskei paced the women's Shocker team to a cross country team title, while claiming an individual
title Thursday morning at the Golf Club at Audubon Park.
Redshirt sophomore Winny Koskei won the 2018 American Athletic Conference championship 6K with a time of 21:51.96,
15 seconds faster than second place finisher Svenja Ojstersek of SMU.
Wichita State women won the team title with 63 points, two points ahead of second place Tulsa. The Shockers placed four athletes in the top-20 including three in the top-15. Rebekah Topham was the second Shocker across the finish line in third place with a time of 22:16.50.

Underserved senators are students who are first generation or underrepresented minorities (American Indian / Alaskan Native, Black non-Hispanic, Hawaiian, Hispanic) or low-income (family income at or below 125 percent of poverty).

The Writing Center can help you with brainstorming ideas, developing a topic or revising your papers. The Math Lab can help with Math 007 through Math 370 assignments, and the Center for Excellence in Oral Communication is a great space to go to practice an individual or group presentation before you have to give it in front of your class.
If you don't know where to go, stop by the Shocker Learning Center in 107 Lindquist Hall, for assistance. Of course, visiting your instructors during office hours, meeting with a study group, and cleaning and organizing your dedicated study space for the final few weeks are also great ideas to help you finish successfully!
Attention undergraduate students: Funding available for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity
The Undergraduate Student Research and Creative Activity Grants Program is now accepting applications for grants of up to $1,000 for students pursing research or creative projects.
Students who are sophomores, juniors or seniors with a GPA of at least 2.5 and at least two semesters remaining at WSU (including the semester in which you apply), are full time and have a faculty research mentor are eligible. Preference is given to projects not otherwise funded and previous awardees are not eligible.

Lunch-n-Learn to feature Arta Kabashi of Proquest
University Libraries is hosting a lunch-n-learn for faculty, staff and students from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov, 6, on the lower level of Ablah Library.
Arta Kabashi of Proquest will highlight several of the more than 70 primary source databases that were recently added as a subscription by the library. These databases cover a wide range of diverse and interdisciplinary areas including anthropological fieldwork, African American studies, human rights, historical newspapers, Native American studies, human rights, women's studies, border and migration studies, environmental studies, global issues, American history, British history, LGTB studies, immigrant letters and diaries, and many more. Incorporating primary sources into research is the focus of the presentation.

Shock Doc features Ashtyn Rottinghaus
Ashtyn Rottinghaus, junior business major, is the next featured students in the Shock Doc series. Rottinghaus is a member of Student Ambassador Society, involved in Greek Life and in the Barton International Group.
She spent time studying abroad in Frances this past summer through support from the Cohen Enhancement Scholarship from the Cohen Honors College. The admissions team shares stories like hers with prospective students to help them understand the world of opportunities that await them at Wichita State.

Glenn Martinez
Glenn Martinez, professor of Hispanic Linguistics at The Ohio State University, will present research on Language and Latino Health at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in 201 Ahlberg Hall.
Martínez, an internationally recognized scholar of Hispanic linguistics, will talk about addressing language barriers in healthcare contexts for Latinos in the United States. This talk presents an updated view of the ways that language use affects healthcare, and how health professionals can engage in language training that empowers both the patient and the provider.
This will be of particular interest to students and faculty interested in interpreting in healthcare settings, language and social justice, Latino studies, linguistics, communication studies, education and public health.
The presentation is free and there will be refreshments. Everyone is welcome.

Opera Theater to present ‘Street Scene'
Wichita State University Opera Theater will present Kurt Weill's “Street Scene” in semi-staged concert performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, in Miller Concert Hall, Duerksen Fine Arts Center.
WSU Opera Theater is under the direction of Alan Held. The Wichita State University Orchestra, conducted by Mark Laycock, will lead this great piece of opera-music theater.
“Street Scene” is a dramatic portrayal of life on the gritty streets of New York. Much humor surrounds the tragic and exciting plot line. The work includes some of Weill's greatest writing with wonderful arias, great ensembles and fabulous chorus numbers.

Working to prevent sex trafficking and help child victims recover
A team from the Barton School of Business has partnered up with the nonprofit founded in Wichita, ICT SOS, that works to prevent sex trafficking and help child trafficking victims recover.
Now through Thursday, Nov. 15, a donation drive is being conducted to collect items for Fresh Start Bags.

Save the date for the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) Oral Showcase Competition from 2-5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, in 306 west Shirley Beggs Ballroom, RSC.
Come celebrate the inaugural WSU Graduate School showcase of student oral presentations of original research. Students were selected to participate through a 3MT Graduate School video submission competition.
