IRB announces revised application process
The revised “Common Rule” for the protection of human subjects went into effect on January 21, 2019. As a result of this, we have revised our application process. There is now only one New Study Application that will need to be submitted. It can be found on the IRB website. Please make note of this and begin using the new form.
WSU Foundation starting plan to grow scholarships for students with financial limitations
The WSU Foundation is starting a plan to grow more need-based aid for students with financial limitations. Learn more about this and other initiatives from Provost Rick Muma.
Providing more scholarships for WSU students with financial need and funding faculty initiatives are among the highest priorities at Wichita State. That’s why I’m excited to learn the WSU Foundation will focus its fundraising efforts in the next 20 months on these two goals. They will be front and center for the final phase of the Shock the World Campaign.
We must invest in faculty in three primary ways. First, enhance salaries to make sure we don’t lose high-achieving educators to other institutions. Second, fund research that adds value to our community. And, third, give faculty the resources they need to direct student research and develop other applied learning opportunities for students. Through the Shock the World Campaign, it is my hope that every discipline at Wichita State has additional funds to support faculty, the backbone of our university.
More scholarship aid for students with financial limitations also is essential. As a public university, Wichita State’s most fundamental mission is to reduce barriers for those who desire higher education. Need-based scholarships open doors for those who can’t otherwise become Shockers. Our mission also focuses on creating a pipeline of talent to employers to help accelerate economic growth. Providing educational opportunity for those who can’t afford it will help accomplish this goal, while improving the economic trajectory for these students and their families. With first-generation students representing more than 40 percent of WSU’s enrollment, the need for more scholarships is urgent.
Shocker Nation has been exceptionally generous in giving to the Shock the World Campaign. In just the first five years of the campaign, contributions have increased scholarship awards by 50 percent. Please consider supporting our faculty and students during the final phase of the campaign.
What’s that huge metal egg-shaped thing by the Food Truck Plaza?
Anyone who has been east of the Food Truck Plaza on campus has probably seen a large, slightly egg-shaped structure being installed. That is what’s known as a pod, and it’s part of the new place-making initiative at Wichita State inviting students, employees and community members to “linger longer” on campus. https://wsu.news/pods

Gartner to help enable change to WSU’s future IT environment
WSU leadership has been looking at the university’s future needs and wants to make sure we have the right IT structure and capabilities to help drive the university’s future success.
WSU has engaged Gartner, a deeply experienced consulting firm, to help us with the process.
To help enable change to WSU’s future IT environment, Gartner has been asked to evaluate four key areas:
- Assess the need for a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and recommend the best methods to deliver services related to the areas of a CISO
- Assess and provide recommendations to improve IT service outcomes on campus, including a review of IT spending and staffing needs to industry peers
- Provide recommendations on the best organizational structure, including IT governance, to optimize WSU’s future success
- Review the IT leadership structure and propose recommendations to address any skill gaps
The review by Gartner will take about 15 weeks, and you may see their team on campus meeting with IT staff and key stakeholders. For those who will be involved in this process, you’ll hear more in the coming weeks.

Graduate Studies presents ‘Patent Searching for Research & Development
Learn how to search for patents alongside scholarly articles to research the advancement of technology in the presentation “Patent Searching for Research & Development from 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in 266 RSC. Snacks will be provided. The presenter will be Sara Butts from University Libraries.
We will focus on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and European Patent Office databases and Google Patents, using a combination of keyword and classification searching, among other strategies.
Managing Classroom discussion training available
Graduate Studies will offer a Managing Classroom discussion and lunch from noon-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in 142 RSC. The presenter will be John Jones from the Media Resources Center.
One of the most effective teaching techniques we have at our disposal is discussion. In this training we will talk about managing discussion – how to draw out students, establish a safe space for students to explore ideas, and how to keep control without stifling student voices.

Graduate student seeking participants for coping with depression research project
A WSU graduate student working on her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology is seeking volunteers to participate in a project that compares two approaches for coping with depression. This study will be conducted within the Department of Psychology (Jabara Hall) under the supervision of Robert Zettle, and will require your involvement for 18- 20 weeks. The study involves eight weekly treatment sessions.
The first two weeks involve one hour sessions and the remaining six sessions will be half-hour sessions. Participants who complete all sessions will be contacted one week and two months later for follow-up measures.
Participants must be at least 18 and will be screened in three stages to determine their eligibility.
If you are interested, complete an online survey (30 minutes) to assess your initial eligibility. The next two stages will be conducted in person for 20 and 50 minutes respectively.

Volunteers sought for upcoming conference at Wichita State
Wichita State is the host of the 27th annual MBLGTACC conference Friday to Sunday, Feb. 15-17. The Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Asexual College Conference (MBLGTACC) is an annual conference held to connect, educate and empower queer and trans+ college students, faculty and staff around the Midwest and beyond.
The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Century II Conference Center. This year’s event is expected to draw more than 1,200 students from around the Midwest, and feature speakers and entertainers including Nyle DiMarco, Janaya Khan, Pidgeon Pigonas, and Penny Tration from Ru Paul’s Drag Race Season 10.
To make this event a success, we need your help! You can choose a volunteer opportunity that fits your schedule. Any person who signs up for three or more volunteer spots is eligible for free registration. This is the conference’s first time in Kansas, so let’s show them some great Shocker hospitality!

Seeking participants for a paid study
Computer users, 18 or older, are sought to participate in a research study investigating the effects of computer monitor resolution on user performance and experience. Do you digitally create / edit illustrations, photos, textures or animation?
The study will take place in McKinley Hall, and last about 90 minutes. Participants will earn $25 or six SONA credits if enrolled in a WSU psychology course.

Volunteer at Wu’s Big Event X
Community Service Board invites you to join us on Saturday, Feb. 9 to make a huge impact in the Wichita community by volunteering at Wu’s Big Event X. Individuals, organizations, faculty, staff, alumni, friends and family are all encouraged to participate in a fun-filled day of service.
The event will be start on the third floor of the RSC in the Shirley Beggs Ballroom. Check-in will run from 8:30-8:50 a.m. We will have fun speakers, a breakfast including muffins and coffee, and you will be given a collectible Wu’s Big Event T-shirt.
Participants will load onto buses and be at a service site by 10 a.m. and volunteer until 1 p.m. Participants will then get back to the RSC for fun celebration activities and lunch (a Chartwells boxed lunch containing sandwich, chips, and fruit). The event will end by 2 p.m.
We hope to serve more than 750 collective volunteer hours on Feb. 9, and we need your help to make this happen!
