Comedian Matt Bellassai to present show at WSU
Writer, comedian, Internet personality, and 2016 People’s Choice Award Winner Matt Bellassai will present a comedy show at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7, in Hughes Metropolitan Complex, presented by Student Activities Council.
Bellassai writes frequently about pop culture, humor, and the struggles of daily life as a twenty-something man-child. He is the former writer, producer, and star of BuzzFeed’s “Whine About It,” a comedic web series that drew a weekly audience of more than 5 million viewers on Facebook. He can currently be found on Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram and Facebook in his new video series “To Be Honest,” where he shares his hilarious commentary on the struggles of life as a single gay man living a childish life in New York.
Tickets can be purchased for $5 to students with WSU ID (limit one per person), $8 to WSU faculty and staff with WSU ID (limit one per person), and $12 to the general public. All ticket options can be purchased in the Student Involvement Office, Suite 216, Rhatigan Student Center with cash or check only. General admission tickets can also be purchased online, via credit card, at WSUMatt.eventbrite.com*.

Severe weather preparedness drill scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday, March 5)
This year, as we have done in the past, WSU will participate in the annual statewide severe weather preparedness drill.
The annual drill this year is tomorrow (Tuesday, March 5). If the weather is clear that day, all of the severe weather sirens in Sedgwick County will go off at 10 a.m. When the severe weather sirens sound, proceed to your designated severe weather shelter area.
Emergency Building Coordinators in each building will ensure that all building occupants safely make their way to the designated severe weather shelter area.
Departments should use this opportunity to ensure that all faculty, staff and students know where to go to protect themselves in a severe weather event.

We have a number of people ready to help you if you are not feeling well or simply need someone to talk to about what’s on your mind. Campus Recreation in the Heskett Center offers a great facility (free to use, by the way) to workout in, get a massage or learn the newest fitness craze to hit campus. Student Health Services (Ahlberg Hall, room 209) will see you if you are feeling ill. And if you just need someone to talk to about what is on your mind, stop by the Counseling and Testing Center (Grace Wilkie Hall, room 320) to schedule an appointment. WSU once again tops national rankings for engineering R&D
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has released updated rankings for university research and development (R&D) expenditures, and Wichita State has held its position as the top university in the country for industry-funded aeronautical R&D with a total of $34 million.
The rankings are derived from the NSF’s Higher Education Research and Development survey, compiled by its National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics, which includes information from all reporting universities for fiscal year 2017, the most recent information available.
For total aerospace R&D expenditures, WSU again ranked No. 4 in the nation with $52 million, a $9 million increase from 2016. This includes both industry and federally funded programs.

ODI looking for students to serve as leaders at Passage 2 Success Retreat
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion is seeking eight-to-10 current WSU students to serve as the leaders for our Passage 2 Success Retreat! Students can apply until Friday, March 8 at www.wichita.edu/p2s.
What is Passage 2 Success?
As a multicultural student, there are a significant amount of resources dedicated to aid incoming freshmen in their transition to Wichita State, and to ensure their academic and social success once they are here on campus. Passage 2 Success is a four-day retreat for incoming freshmen from diverse backgrounds. The purpose is to get them connected with other incoming students, explore Wichita, meet WSU staff and student leaders, and gain the skills and tools to be socially and academically successful.

Ulrich Alliance to award two $500 Scholarships this spring – Deadline: March 8
The Ulrich Museum Alliance will grant a $500 scholarship award to an undergraduate and graduate student currently enrolled in the School of Art, Design and Creative Industries for the spring 2019 semester. Applications will be accepted email at ulrichmuseum@gmail.com until 4 p.m. Friday, March 8.
Graduate & Undergraduate Scholarships
Based on a portfolio review and a short statement of intent, the Ulrich Museum Alliance will grant a $500 scholarship award to an undergraduate and graduate student currently enrolled in the School of Art, Design and Creative Industries for the spring 2019 semester.
Scholarships will be presented at the Ulrich Summer Exhibition Opening Party on Friday, April 12.
Applications will be accepted via e-mail at ulrichmuseum@gmail.com until 4 p.m. Friday, March 8. Incomplete applications will not be processed for consideration.
Undergraduate Students
Five finalists will be selected for the undergraduate scholarship, and invited to install five works each, for final review, and selection of the award by the Ulrich Alliance. Scholarship finalists will be notified by March 22. The awarded recipient will be contacted by April 5.
Eligibility: Completion of the Foundation Studies Program, and presently enrolled in Mid-Program Review; Junior or Senior standing in the Art, Design and Creative Industries program, and current enrollment in nine or more credit hours.
Graduate Students
Based on a portfolio review installed at McKnight Project Space or Henrion Hall, and a short artist statement, the Ulrich Museum Alliance (UMA) will grant a $500 scholarship award to a graduate major in the School of Art, Design and Creative Industries for the spring 2019 semester.
Eligibility: Presently enrolled in the MFA program within the School of Art, Design and Creative Industries and current enrollment in nine or more credit hours.

Third Annual Diverse Women’s Summit set for March 6-8
The Women's Studies Department will host its Third Annual Diverse Women's Summit Wednesday, March 6 to Friday, March 8, with the theme Accessibility and Inclusivity
The kick-off event will be the keynote by Katie Batza from the University of Kansas, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, in Shirley Beggs Ballroom.
Students will give presentations from 9 a.m.-3:45 p.m. Thursday, March 7, showcasing what's going on at the university in Women's Studies.
On Friday, March 8, we partner with JumpStar Stories and Griots for a program of creative performances from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in Hubbard Hall, and in the evening we partner with Positive Directions for a program in Shirley Beggs Ballroom, featuring River Huson.
Clarinetist Katsuya Yuasa to present recital on March 7
The Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation and Wichita Mu Phi Epsilon Alumni Chapter present clarinetist Katsuya Yuasa, 2017 Mu Phi Epsilon Concert Artist at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, in Wiedemann Hall. Yuasa will be accompanied by Bridget Hille. Admission is free, but a $10 donation is suggested. A reception will follow the recital.
Yuasa has performed widely in the U.S. as a soloist and chamber musician. He is a founding member of Cosmos New Music, which will make its Carnegie Hall debut this summer. In addition to performing and giving master classes, Katsuya maintains an active schedule as a teacher at Florida A&M University and at Florida State University.
Yuasa will present free masterclass at 11 a.m. earlier that day in C116 Duerksen Fine Arts Center.

Nationally known speaker to lead three events at WSU this month
Anne Krook is a nationally known speaker who helps students transition from the academy (university) to the workplace, using the language that employers expect from applicants.
Krook herself left academia (she was an assistant professor of English at the University of Michigan) to work for a small startup in Seattle … Amazon (!), where she enjoyed many roles both abroad and in the United States. She then went on to become VP of Operations at another startup, Mindbloom, and then VP of Operations at Synapse.
She now specializes in helping graduate students transition to non-academic workplaces and undergraduate humanities majors translate their skills into jobs. In addition to her consulting work, Krook currently chairs the Board of Directors of Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund.

Graduate student seeking participants for coping with depression research project
A WSU graduate student working on her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology is seeking volunteers to participate in a project that compares two approaches for coping with depression. This study will be conducted within the Department of Psychology (Jabara Hall) under the supervision of Robert Zettle, and will require your involvement for 18- 20 weeks. The study involves eight weekly treatment sessions.
The first two weeks involve one hour sessions and the remaining six sessions will be half-hour sessions. Participants who complete all sessions will be contacted one week and two months later for follow-up measures.
Participants must be at least 18 and will be screened in three stages to determine their eligibility.
If you are interested, complete an online survey (30 minutes) to assess your initial eligibility. The next two stages will be conducted in person for 20 and 50 minutes respectively.

Service-Learning Showcase registration open
The Service-Learning Showcase will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, in 233 RSC. It is a unique opportunity for students who participate in service-learning through applied learning opportunities to showcase their experience through a research or reflective poster about the application of their course work to current community issues.
The showcase is an open forum for students to interact with faculty, staff, community partners and other students to engage in conversation about WSU’s commitment to the public good. Awards are presented in the following categories: Overall Service-Learning, Community Impact, Innovation and Creativity (i.e., problem solving), and Collaboration/Leadership.

Seeking participants for a paid study investigating effects of computer monitor resolution on user performance / experience
Computer users, 18 or older, are sought to participate in a research study investigating the effects of computer monitor resolution on user performance and experience. Do you digitally create / edit illustrations, photos, textures or animation?
The study will take place in McKinley Hall, and last about 90 minutes. Participants will earn $25 or six SONA credits if enrolled in a WSU psychology course.

For the first time WSU is hosting a Women’s 6v6 soccer tournament. To participate, gather a team of five field players and one goalie and submit the $100 fee by Friday, March 22. The event will be held Saturday, March 30 at the Hughes Metropolitan Complex fields.
