2019 SGA Presidential and Vice Presidential Debate set for March 29
Join the SGA Elections Commission for the 2019 Presidential and Vice Presidential Debate for your final chance to learn about all four of our tickets at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 29, in the CAC Theater (doors open at 6 p.m.).
The debate will be moderated by Brandon J. Johnson, Wichita City Council Member from District 1, and will cover a variety of topics from platform points to broad overviews of their hopes for student government.

WSU ranks in top 100 engineering grad schools, top 50 in engineering research dollars
In newly released national rankings of universities offering a Ph.D. in engineering, the College of Engineering at Wichita State University is ranked in the top 100 engineering graduate programs, one of only two institutions from the state of Kansas to make the list.
The 2020 rankings by U.S. News and World Report are based on a number of factors including reputation among peer institutions and industry recruiters, student selectivity, faculty resources and research expenditures – an area where Wichita State far outperforms peers. A recently released National Science Foundation report of FY2017 total engineering research expenditures ranked Wichita State 49th in the nation, far more than any other institution in Kansas.
Applications are open for Shocker Leadership Awards
Applications are now open for the 7th Annual Shocker Leadership Awards. The Shocker Leadership Awards are a way to recognize the work of student-led organizations, students, faculty and staff at Wichita State University. Recognized student organizations, university affiliated student groups and individuals may be nominated by a student, faculty member, staff member, or organization, or may nominate themselves for one of the awards.
One application form must be completed for every award for which one wishes to be considered. A nomination must have all parts to be considered by the selection committee. It is the responsibility of the nominator to turn in a complete packet. Applications are now open. Click on leadership awards to learn more and to submit your application. Student input sought on price and use of textbooks
Wichita State University Student Government Association in cooperation with the Kansas Board of Regents Student Advisory Committee (SAC) is soliciting student input on the prices and usage of textbooks.
SAC is in the process of reviewing the feasibility of adapting open educational resources (OERs) across the Regent institutions. Open educational resources are openly licensed course materials that are free to use for professors and students, and can be a replacement for traditional textbooks. To ensure WSU student input is included in this proposal, we ask you to take the time to participate in this short survey. This survey will take three-to-five minutes to complete. WSU Weekly Briefing to feature varsity esports coordinator
The WSU Weekly Briefing will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 21, in the Marcus Welcome Center. The featured speaker will be Tyler Levesque (La-Veck), varsity esports coordinator.
Tracee Friess, director of communications for research and technology transfer, will provide an overall university update.

Hundreds pay respect to President Bardo during his last ride through campus
Hundreds came out yesterday (Monday, March 18) to honor and mourn President John Bardo, who died March 12. Following a private service, Dr. Bardo took one last ride through the campus he dearly loved. The funeral procession paused at five locations throughout the university as students, faculty, staff and community members stood solemnly in observation.

The WSU College Readiness Partnership Initiative invites you to a workshop by Sue Keller-Mathers from 9-11 a.m. Monday, March 25, in 233 Rhatigan Student Center.
Creativity was named the top skill worldwide for 2109 by Linkedin. Calling it “Career Proof” in an age when automation is making more jobs obsolete, the demand for workers who can think in novel ways and solve problems that have never been encountered before is essential. Given that workers will need to be able to adapt, learn new skills and will be employed in jobs that don’t exist today, employers are looking for creativity in their future hires. In this workshop, you’ll examine ways to identify your creative strengths and practice a set of skills for improving creativity for use in your current college career and beyond.

WSU presents “The Theory of Relativity," the musical
Wichita State University’s School of Performing Arts will present “The Theory of Relativity”, the musical (rated PG). The musical will take place 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21 to Saturday, March 23 and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 24, in Wilner Auditorium.
“The Theory of Relativity” is a song cycle written in 2016 by the Drama Desk Award-nominated team Neil Bartram and Brian Hill. It is a musical written for and about college-age youth and is sure to offer audiences a new perspective on the millennial generation and the idea of infinite uncertainty combined with the logical certainty of mathematics and physics. It is an emotional and highly accessible show that examines love, friendship, parental expectations, personal aspirations and human connection.
The cast of the musical features 13 musical theatre majors (Ariel Glorsky, Natalie Carrera, Ari Chandler, Grace Roush, Courtney Wages, Katriana Kisner, Jackson Dorris, Nora Dooley, Philip Hanson, Jacob Kramer, Trevor Seyl, William Day and Lucas Lowry).
Along with the cast, the musical features a variety of talent from the design team, including Associate Professors David Neville (lighting design) and Ed Baker (set design and technical direction); and student design and technical theatre majors include Erin Mittman (stage manager), Sydney Jordan (sound design), Ali Miro (asst. lighting designer), Emily Evans (costume coordinator) and Wesley Sweigart (props).
Tickets are $20, $18 and $10. WSU students receive one free ticket with WSU student ID.

WSU Graduate Student of the Year competition results
This year’s competition started with 48 applications. Ten were selected to move forward to the second round, which included a presentation and interview. Among these, six emerged as our finalists for this year’s competition. We had a remarkable pool of candidates this year.

International Admissions announces T-shirt Design Contest
International Admissions is looking for a fresh T-shirt design! From now until May 17, our office will accept design submissions for our T-shirt Design Contest. Your design should reflect / convey the international and cultural diversity of WSU. This contest is open to all WSU students. The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Wichita Space Initiative to feature WSU graduate student Calem Gimar
Join the Wichita Space Initiative as we welcome Caleb Gimar, a graduate student in the WSU Physics Department, who will present a talk "Looking into the Heart of the Sun: A Space Mission Concept,” at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28, in 233 RSC.
Gimar’s talk will discuss design studies conducted at WSU for a novel approach to observing the solar neutrino flux. As always, talks in the WSI's Space Exploration Lecture Series are free and open to the public.

Graduate student seeking participants for coping with depression research project
A WSU graduate student working on her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology is seeking volunteers to participate in a project that compares two approaches for coping with depression. This study will be conducted within the Department of Psychology (Jabara Hall) under the supervision of Robert Zettle, and will require your involvement for 18- 20 weeks. The study involves eight weekly treatment sessions.
The first two weeks involve one hour sessions and the remaining six sessions will be half-hour sessions. Participants who complete all sessions will be contacted one week and two months later for follow-up measures.
Participants must be at least 18 and will be screened in three stages to determine their eligibility.
If you are interested, complete an online survey (30 minutes) to assess your initial eligibility. The next two stages will be conducted in person for 20 and 50 minutes respectively.

Faculty Artist Series presents the Orfeo Trio
The Orfeo Trio – Julie Bees, piano; Leonid Shukaev, cello; and Evgeny Zvonnikov, violin (guest) – will present a Faculty Artist Series concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 31, in Wiedemann Hall. The trio will perform works by Mozart, Turina and Beethoven.

Research study: Coping with negative thoughts
Experiencing negative thoughts such as “Something is wrong with me,” “I’ll never make it,” and “No one understands me,” is a common experience for many people. A research project is currently underway in the Department of Psychology investigating different ways of coping with such negative thoughts.
If you are interested in seeing if you qualify to participate in this project, and are age 18 years or older, please follow the link below to complete a 20-30 minute screening survey. Individuals taking part in this screening survey can either choose to be entered into a drawing for a $40 Amazon gift card, or to receive 2 SONA credits for WSU courses (you must be a current WSU student to receive SONA credits).
