WSU students who need professional clothing for career fairs, interviews, and professional development opportunities should come to the Career Development Center’s Career Closet event from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, Sept. 10), in Brennan III.

Shocker Store to have $6 T-shirts for one day only!

The first one-day-only T-shirt sale of the school year will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Shocker Store (RSC-location only). Two styles of T-shirts will be available for $6 each, while supplies last. Limit three per customer. Sale is in-store only. Offer not valid with other discounts or promotions and all sales are final.

Build-A-Friend on Sept. 10 in RSC

Looking for an unBEARably adorable friend? Stop by at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, Sept. 10), on the first floor in the RSC, and build your own pawesome pal. Which friend will you choose to don a custom WSU tiny T-shirt and take home? Limit one friend per participant as supplies are limited.

WSU students can apply for free registration to NASA Conference

WSU, in cooperation with NASA, Tennessee Valley Interstellar Workshop (TVIW), and Ad Astra Kansas Science Foundation, is hosting the 6th Interstellar Symposium and NASA Advanced Propulsion Workshop from Nov. 10-15, in downtown Wichita. This meeting will bring in experts in the physics, engineering, humanities, and social sciences of interstellar travel as part of a Congressionally-mandated NASA effort to launch the first interstellar probe by 2069.

A private gift from Dr. Robert Hampson will fund the registration costs ($125 value) for a limited number of WSU students to attend the week-long event, including the Sunday evening welcome reception and all conference meals. Those interested in applying for free registration must complete the form.

The application deadline is Monday, Sept. 30.

Each entrant must provide a one paragraph statement describing their interest in attending the Symposium and Workshop. The best applicants will be chosen by the local organizing committee. This opportunity is open to WSU students of any major or field of study – both undergraduate and graduate.

Strategic Planning Update: A year in review . . .

The Strategic Planning Committee is hosting a town hall from 3-4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, in 208 Hubbard Hall. 

The September town hall will provide an opportunity to share the results of the committee’s work on input received at the May 2 town hall. All feedback was reviewed, evaluated and incorporated into the update that will be shared on Sept. 19. The town hall meeting is open to all members of the campus community, and the Wichita community at large. 

Prior to the September Town Hall, please take a moment to review the Strategic Planning Update. Visit the website and submit your feedback on or before Thursday, Sept. 12.

Shocker Circle registration is open now!

Registration is now open for the Shocker Circles.

Circles are intended to be an engagement process for collaboration and understanding as it relates to shared governance. Each participant is assigned to a table at random and each will have a trained facilitator. The principles and practices of the circle process provide a structure that allows and encourages idea sharing and conversation.

Shocker MINDSTORMS Challenge 2020

We are happy to announce our upcoming 20th MINDSTORMS challenge at WSU in March 2020. Shocker MINDSTORMS program at Wichita State includes several events designed to encourage students of all ages (K-12 and adult) to explore, experiment and experience STEM -- science, technology, engineering and mathematics teaching and learning in a hands-on constructionist environment.

The annual Shocker MINDSTORMS Challenge is a collaboration among WSU's College of Engineering and College of Applied Studies, and local industry professionals. The challenge provides young students with the opportunity for practical application and exhibition of math, science, programming, and engineering skills, as well as promoting teamwork, dedication, and sportsmanship. 

Participating in Shocker MINDSTORMS challenge is free, and we are also providing a free training session for new coaches from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at WSU. Please encourage your teachers to attend this training session to understand the rules and programing skills needed for this MINDSTORMS challenge. This challenge is only for elementary and middle-school students. Thirty-three teams (362 kids) participated in the last year’s event.

Last chance: Registration for Engage WSU 2019 closes on Tuesday, Sept. 10

From 7:30 a.m.-noon Friday, Sept. 13, the Public Policy and Management Center and the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement will present Engage WSU, a day that brings together university, public, nonprofit, and community leaders for current research and knowledge exchange in public service. Reserve your spot now, because registration for this event will close tomorrow (Tuesday, Sept. 10). 

Engage WSU will be held at WSU's Marcus Welcome Center, and will feature a keynote address from Lt. Gov. Lynn Rogers, parting words from retired Sedgwick County undersheriff Brenda Dietzman, a presentation on placemaking from WSU’s Placemaking Coordinator Kristin Beal, and various breakout sessions. 

The breakout session topics will include Media Coverage of Community Driven Issues; Profiles of High Utilizers of Mental Health Community Services; Continuing the Connecting Conversation: Talent & Retention; and Diversity and Community Engagement.

'Writing Now, Reading Now' series presents reading by Poet Ilya Kaminsky tomorrow (Tuesday, Sept. 10)

Born in the former Soviet Union, American poet Ilya Kaminsky has enchanted readers and electrified audiences for more than a decade. Now, his new book, DEAF REPUBLIC, is perhaps the most wildly praised poetry book of the year. Partly deaf since childhood, Kaminsky has created a work of “profound imagination” (The New Yorker)—a mix of fairy tale and political parable—in which a town's people go deaf in solidarity with a deaf boy shot by military police. Kaminsky writes in a joyous, life-affirming spirit that uplifts and gives courage, even as it grieves and protests. The result will astonish: a timeless story that speaks uniquely to our time and our divided nation. 

This event is free and open to the public. The reception begins at 5:30 p.m., and the reading begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, in McKnight Art Center. Books will be available, and a book signing will follow. The event is co-sponsored by the Department of English, the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literature, the Ulrich Museum, and Watermark Books.

Mikrokosmos Literary Journal is accepting submissions from students, faculty, and staff

Wichita State's Literary Journal Mikrokosmos is now open for submissions! Each year, we publish a print journal with the creative work of Wichita State faculty, staff, students, and alum. 

We are looking for great pieces of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Submissions are open until Nov. 15. All pieces can be sent to mojoeditors@gmail.com with the subject line "Mikro 66 Submission." Pieces should be attached in a word doc or PDF. For submission guidelines, see below.

University Libraries to hold two Savvy Researcher Workshops

University Libraries will hold two Savvy Researcher workshops this week. 

The first workshop, “Using Library Databases: Tips and Tricks," will be from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, in 217 Ablah Library. Save time and get better results in your research utilizing techniques like proximity searching, setting filters and limits, and using thesauri and wildcards. 

The second, “Introduction to Endnote," will be from noon-1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, in 217 Ablah Library. Learn to use Endnote to upload citation data from library databases, create new citations in various citation styles, organize citations, and insert citations into a MS Word document.

SAMPE Wichita Golf Tournament 2019

The SAMPE Wichita Chapter golf tournament will be held at 9 a.m. Monday Sept. 16, at the Reflection Ridge Golf Course, 7700 W. Reflection Road. The tournament will raise funds for the Darrel Dugan Scholarship, which awards scholarships for local engineering students pursuing degrees in material and process engineering. The entry fee is $100 per player, and will cover green fees, cart fees, lunch, drinks, tickets, and prizes. The tournament will be a four-person scramble with shotgun start. The entry deadline is tomorrow (Tuesday, Sept. 10).

Sport management junior tells student-athletes' stories

Aliyah Funschelle is a Wichita State junior studying sport management and is the campus representative for the American Athletic Conference and its digital network.

In her position with the AAC, Aliyah interviews Shocker student-athletes, providing their in-depth stories to the network.

The internship combines Aliyah’s her love of reporting with her passion for sports. In her time there, she has covered the NCAA Tournament, AAC conference tournaments and the National Invitational Tournament.

“I feel like if I were at a different school, I wouldn’t have those opportunities,” Aliyah says. “Wichita State just really helps place you where you’re meant to be. They want to see you succeed.”

Basketball scrimmage, garage sale set for Oct. 5

It's out with the old and in with the new on Saturday, Oct. 5 when Wichita State hosts its annual athletic department garage sale followed by the 2019 Black & Yellow Scrimmage.
 
From 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Shocker fans will get their first look at the 2019-20 men's and women's basketball teams during an intrasquad doubleheader. The women take the court first, followed by the men.
 
Fans are also invited to stop by the garage sale that morning from 7-9:45 a.m. inside the Aetna Multi-Purpose Gym (enter through the exterior doors on the east side of Charles Koch Arena). Items are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and include jerseys and uniforms, assorted apparel, bags, and equipment. Prices listed are non-negotiable. Customers are encouraged to pay with cash, however, credit cards will also be accepted.

Future appointments will include exams and any prescriptions discussed between you and our college health specialists.

Werner graduated from WSU with his degree in entrepreneurship, and has since built a locally owned and operated business that is dedicated to revolutionizing the lawn care business!

Register a team for Sigma Lambda Beta's second annual ‘Protect Your Balls’ dodgeball tournament

The second annual “Protect Your Balls” dodgeball tournament will be hosted by the Rho Beta Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc. at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, on the second floor of the Heskett Center. All proceeds will go toward testicular cancer research.

Teams are allowed up to 10 players maximum, but must have at least eight players to form a team. Each person must pay a $16 registration fee (cash only), which includes a T-shirt and a self-examination awareness kit. We will also have a drawing for giveaways.

Each person who registers will automatically receive one ticket, and participants can purchase additional tickets for $1! There will be prizes such as headphones, gift cards, WSU merchandise, a Yeti Cup, duffel bag, and Bluetooth speaker!

The deadline to register for a team is 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11.
