New myWSU name process now available
As a diverse and inclusive campus community, Wichita State University recognizes that its students may identify themselves by names within the campus community that are different than their legal names. A student's name in our community and systems will be known as their myWSU Name.
A new process has been put in place to allow students to identify a chosen name to be used as their myWSU Name. Find more information about how to add a chosen name to a record, where chosen vs. legal name will be used, etc., at wichita.edu/name.

What: The Wichita State University Graduate Student Council (GSC) is a newly constituted graduate student governing organization led currently by the members of the Graduate Student Association.
Why: GSC seeks to engage graduate students with social and collaborative events, let voices be heard from graduate students in all departments, and open channels of communication between graduate students, faculty, and administration.
How: After the election we will have two meetings of the full council per month, as well as once monthly committee meetings. Councilors will serve until the completion of the spring 2020 semester.
When: The nomination period for the election is through today (Friday, Oct. 18). Election week is Oct. 28-30. The council currently meets at 4:30 p.m. every Thursday.
What can you do as students: Nominate a peer or yourself as a representative of your department. Attend our events. Provide feedback about how we can serve the graduate student body better!

Faculty-produced documentary to premiere at local film festival
The documentary “Cocin(ando) Wichita,” will premiere at the upcoming Tallgrass Film Festival at 12:15 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, during the event The State of Kansas: Past, Present, and Future at the Wilke Family Center. Tickets are $10, and are available on the festival´s website. The documentary is in Spanish with English / Spanish subtitles.
“Cocin(ando) Wichita,” is a 19-minute narrative about immigration and food in Wichita’s Hispanic community. The documentary acknowledges the value of people who have kept their culinary traditions, and how that has shaped their culture and their communities. This project was made possible by a grant awarded by Kansas Humanities.
The documentary was produced and directed by Rocio del Aguila, assistant professor of Spanish. Enrique Navarro, assistant professor of Spanish, served as the co-producer and creative director. Carolyn Speer, manager of WSU’s instructional design and technology, served as the Kansas Humanities consultant, and Jay Price, professor of history, provided his insights about Kansas.
Jenny Masias and Margi Ault-Duell, both graduate students in Spanish, collaborated in the screenplay and captions. Elizabeth Harp, undergraduate, Spanish and elementary education, served as the project assistant.
The Fourth Annual Ad Astra Conference for first-generation students is scheduled for Oct. 25-26
This conference is a two-day event where first-generation college students across the state meet each other, share common challenges and opportunities and get information about how to better understand the college experience and society.
This year's conference will focus on topics such as imposter syndrome, using your strengths for success, developing soft skills, and the importance of the advising relationship, among others. It will include a game night, fashion show and other interactive networking sessions.
Make a difference as a Prevention Ambassador
The Prevention Services Advisory Board (PSAB) is currently recruiting students to become Prevention Ambassadors. They will assist the PSAB in our mission as it aligns with the #WSUWeSupportU prevention program that focuses on promoting mental health and wellness and preventing suicide, sexual violence and substance abuse. This position qualifies for a zero-credit internship, and will provide the opportunity to engage with the WSU community.

First-Year Programs in Student Success is seeking nominations for next year’s transition mentor staff! We are looking for exceptional students who are passionate about WSU and want to help welcome new students to our campus.
Transition Mentors are responsible for transitioning students to WSU beginning in the summer with orientation, and mentoring new freshmen throughout the fall semester.

LeaderShape Institute applications due Oct. 30
WSU is hosting its third session of the Institute by LeaderShape, a four-day experience that challenges participants to lead with integrity. This is a nationally recognized organization that facilitates participants through a series of dynamic, challenging, and exciting sessions designed to increase, develop, and launch the leadership capacity of students. This experience will not only benefit them individually, but professionally, and the communities / organizations they go on to lead and serve in the future.
Participants will cultivate leadership skills, reflect, and discuss leadership lessons within a small cohort or cluster of students. LeaderShape will be held at Rock Springs 4-H Center in Junction City, Kansas, from Jan. 14-17, 2020.

Trunk or Treat is a family-orientated event welcoming Shockers of all ages to campus for a safe alternative to traditional trick-or-treating. Student Activities Council wants your department or student organization to host a trunk!

LGBTQ+ research volunteers needed!
Volunteers are needed for a research study. Students from the WSU Physician Assistant Program want to identify health care barriers faced by the LGBTQ+ community so we can educate providers on how to address and overcome these barriers.
This will be an anonymous online survey that should take approximately 15-20 minutes.
Participants must be 18 years or older and identify as LGBTQ+.

Register for Education Exchange taking place on Oct. 22
The Education Exchange taking place at 3-5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, in the RSC, is a reverse career fair that provides WSU students an opportunity to network with representatives from school districts in the Wichita area and across the state.
In addition, the event provides an opportunity for students to prepare for the Education Interview Day, scheduled for March 5, 2020, by learning about school districts and their enrollment, benefits, etc. Participation in this event provides an opportunity to have conversations with staff that recruit and hire for the various school districts including superintendents, principals, and human resources staff. It will also give students a chance to improve their networking skills, in a learning environment with Career Development Center staff on hand to answer questions if needed.

Enroll for a service-learning course in psychology
The INSPYRE research lab, directed by Samantha Gregus, is recruiting undergraduate mentors for a three-hour service-learning course for Psychology and Probrlems in Society (PSY 416) for the spring 2020 semester.
Prior to enrolling in PSY 416, mentors are required to pass an interview, background check, have reliable transportation and lunch availability from noon-2 p.m. at least twice a week and class from 3:30-6 p.m. on Mondays.

Wichita State/WSU Tech grant
In May, Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing awarded funding for Automation Manufacturing – Technicians for the Future.
Automation Manufacturing – Technicians for the Future is focused on the creation of short-term, for-credit, modularized certificates to help increase the pipeline of a skilled workforce in developing and maintaining automated advanced manufacturing systems.
The resulting certificates will be stackable into an associates degree from WSU Tech and transferrable into bachelor’s degree programs through Wichita State University. The project will combine Robotics Technology, Maintenance and Reliability, and Industrial Automation Machine Maintenance courses to provide employers with options to upskill employees.
Over the summer, WSU and WSU Tech created an industry-approved educational model and developed a student pipeline with outside manufacturing.
Meetings with companies showed a common set of targeted entry-level skills needed to be successful in this field are in demand. Companies are looking for entry-level talent who they defined as, “farmhands.” In particular, those who grew up working with machinery and had the dexterity to move into the field.
FAFSA period opens
Applications for federal student aid for 2020-21 began on Oct. 1.
Based on the information you provide on the FAFSA, WSU will create an award package that may include federal grants, loans, work study and/or WSU scholarships.
December 1 is Wichita State’s priority date to maximize your federal financial aid assistance.
Nearly 60 percent of Wichita State students receive some sort of financial aid, totaling around $105 million.
Kansas Board of Regents
Members of the Kansas Board of Regents visited Wichita State on Wednesday and Thursday this week. On Wednesday, members of the board met with applied learning students to learn about their experiences with Airbus, Ennovar, NetApp, Textron Aviation, the Wichita Thunder hockey club, the City of Wichita and others.
Shocktoberfest
Shocktoberfest begins Saturday and runs through Oct. 26. Athletic events and activities, competitions, service, philanthropies, a birthday celebration for WuShock and a lip sync competition.
The Pumpkin Run winds through campus on Saturday. The 5-kilometer race begins at 9 a.m. The Little Pumpkin Run (1-kilometer) begins at 10:19 a.m. The run begins and ends in the Shocker Hall courtyard.
Trunk or Treat runs from 1-4 pm Saturday at Braeburn Square.

Two ‘Lab Girl’ Big Read events at WSU on Saturday, Oct. 26
The 7th annual Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) event at WSU invites middle school girls from the surrounding area to attend the workshops on Saturday, Oct. 26.
This year, EYH, an event promoting career exploration in fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for young women, is also tied to Wichita’s Big Read, and will also feature a parallel “Lab Crawl” for any other individuals interested in exploring STEM labs.
EYH registration is limited to 200 participants to maximize interaction at workshops, and will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis through Tuesday, Oct. 22. The registration fee of $15 includes lunch at Shocker Hall, a T-shirt and bag for the student attending. EYH students will be able to register for a variety of STEM workshops ranging from a hexapod scavenger hunt to an energy-efficiency break-out room.
Lab Crawl participants can attend the opening ceremonies for EYH and then join behind-the-scenes tours of research labs at facilities at WSU on their own. See scientists in action, ask questions and try out some of the tools of the trade. Registration is also requested, but there is no fee for the “Lab Crawl.”

Ulrich Museum exhibition catalogue wins Best Graphic Design Award from Kansas Museum Association
A colorful exhibition catalogue showcasing the work of an important Wichita artist and published by Wichita State University’s Ulrich Museum of Art has been chosen for an award by the Kansas Museum Association (KMA).
The catalogue, Kevin Mullins: Fire in the Paint Locker, was recently named Top Graphic Design by the KMA. The award will be presented to Ulrich Director Leslie Brothers at the association’s awards luncheon on Friday, Nov. 8 in Lindsborg, Kansas.
The retrospective catalogue, which features more than 100 color images and four color fold-outs, was published to coincide with the art exhibition of the same name, which was on display at the Ulrich from April 12 through Aug. 11 this year. The book was produced with the help of Wichita-based integrated marketing agency Howerton+White.
Ulrich Director Leslie Brothers said the award was especially meaningful given the artist’s ties to the Wichita community.
“We are extremely proud of this book, which pays tribute to the wonderful work Kevin Mullins produced during his lifetime,” Brothers said. “This project was truly a group effort, bringing together the insightful talents of UIrich staff, Howerton+White, and exhibition co-curators Ann Resnick and Dan Rouser.”
Along with the many color images of Mullins’s work over a 30-year period, the catalogue also features five insightful essays by David Butler, former Ulrich director; Elizabeth Dunbar, former Ulrich curator; Bill North, director of the Salina Art Center; art critic Mike Odom; and artist David Reed. It also includes an introduction by co-curator Rouser.
Mullins was a beloved figure on the Wichita art scene long before his work started to receive international attention. From 1995 to 2010, he served as the curator for exhibitions at the Ulrich while still maintaining an active studio practice. In 1997, he and Resnick opened Project, an art gallery near Douglas and Hydraulic, helping to revitalize that area of town while also introducing world-class artists to the Wichita community.
This marks the second consecutive year that the Ulrich has received an award from KMA. Last year, the museum received the association’s Technology Award for its Ulrich App, which helps patrons navigate its world-class Martin H. Bush Outdoor Sculpture Collection.
Although the Mullins exhibition is no longer on display at the Ulrich, copies of the catalogue can still be purchased for $60 each by visiting the museum’s website (ulrich.wichita.edu) or by clicking this link.

Language and comics study
Are you interested in participating in an in-person psychological / linguistic study about comics and language? You have the opportunity to earn $10 after completing the study. We will schedule an appointment to meet in the library and administer a computer-based study that takes less than an hour.
