New WSU president announcement and reception set for Thursday, Oct. 31
The Kansas Board of Regents has announced a meeting of the board at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, in the Rhatigan Student Center, Room 233 (Santa Fe Trail Room). The board plans to hold a public vote to name the next President of Wichita State University, with a reception following.
Everyone is invited to the announcement, but seating is limited. The announcement will also be streamed live at https://wsu.news/president-elect.
Following the announcement, there will be a reception on the 2nd floor of the RSC for the president-elect. All are welcome to attend.
Inclement weather information and communication

Care Team update to campus community
As we approach the end of the semester and the added stress of finals season, the Care Team would like to remind everyone that we’re here to help. The campus community is the Team’s eyes and ears, and we hope you will all continue to let us know when you’re concerned about someone’s well-being.
The data shows that for the months of August and September, the number of Care cases reported is up 67% from the same time period last year. The most common presenting concern is anxiety, which may worsen as we approach the end of the semester.
- Some signs that someone is living with anxiety and may need some help:
- Avoidance and reluctance to participate
- Procrastination
- Visible distress
- Changes in sleep habits
- Changes in eating habits
- Psychosomatic issues (headaches, stomachaches, back, neck, and/or shoulder pain)
- Social isolation
- Stronger emotional responses than seem appropriate for the situation, including panic
- Feeling overwhelmed
- Maladaptive coping strategies (alcohol or other substance use, overuse of technology)
If you believe someone on campus is living with anxiety, here are some things you can do to help:
- Ask how they’re doing. Knowing someone cares can be very helpful for any kind of distress. It can also help you to learn more about the situation
- Express concern. It’s okay to tell someone you’re worried about them. It can be helpful to list specific areas of concern, such as an incident of visible distress, changes in behavior, or poor attendance.
- Talk resources. There are many resources available on campus, including Counseling and Prevention Services, Disability Services, and, of course, Care Team.
- Contact the Care Team. We can be reached at wichita.edu/care or 316-978-3149.
- If you’re concerned about a member of our campus community, please don’t hesitate to submit a concern. If you’d like to learn more about Care Team, our next training will be from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5. You can sign up in myTraining in myWSU.

University Climate Survey is still live – be sure to check your email and respond
Message from WSU Provost Rick Muma:
Last Tuesday, Oct. 22, the Wichita State University Office of Assessment launched its tri-annual 2019 Climate Survey. This survey is intended as a follow-up to a similar survey that was administered in the fall of 2016.
This survey is offered to students, faculty, staff and administrators, and it is intended to provide information to campus leaders, appropriate offices and initiatives, related to experiences and perceptions of the campus climate. The survey will examine both satisfaction and comfort with the current climate with diversity and equity as its lens.
Results from the survey will explicitly inform the university’s work on three of our updated strategic plan goals.
- Student Centeredness - Promote holistic student success through a supportive learning environment in which all of our students…past, present and future, continually thrive and grow.
- Campus Culture - Empower students, faculty, staff and the greater Wichita community to create a culture and experience that meets their ever-changing needs.
- Inclusive Excellence – Be a campus that reflects and promotes – in all community members – the evolving diversity of society.
The survey will remain open for two more weeks. The quantitative analysis should be complete by the end of the semester and results related to the open-ended questions, or qualitative responses, soon thereafter. Lunch and Learns will be hosted in February by the University Assessment Committee in partnership with the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

WSU Fire & Safety will conduct annual fire alarm testing
Now through the entire month of November, WSU Fire & Safety will conduct annual fire alarm testing in campus facilities. There should be minimal disruptions to business or classes.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo meets with Wichita State business students
W. Frank Barton School of Business students recently discussed leadership, service to country and careers with Mike Pompeo, a former Wichita businessman, U.S. Representative and director of the CIA.
Pompeo also went to Charles Koch Arena and spoke with the Wichita State men’s basketball coaches and student-athletes. He took pictures on the court with members of the men’s and women’s teams.

Enroll for a service-learning course in psychology
The INSPYRE research lab, directed by Samantha Gregus, is recruiting undergraduate mentors for a 3-hour service-learning course for Psychology and Problems in Society (PSY 416) for the spring 2020 semester.
Prior to enrolling in PSY 416, mentors are required to pass an interview, background check, have reliable transportation and lunch availability from noon-2 p.m. at least twice a week and class from 3:30-6 p.m. on Mondays.

Shocker Printing will be closed briefly for training

The WSU Weekly Briefing will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, in the Marcus Welcome Center. The featured speaker will be Doug Stucky with the Institute of Interdisciplinary Innovation at Wichita State. Stucky will present information about the institute and how the department contributes to mission and vision of the university.
Andy McFayden, executive director, Strategic Communications, WSU Tech, will give the overall university update.

University Libraries will hold two Savvy Researcher workshops this week
The first workshop, “Comparing Citation Management Software," will be from 4-5 p.m. today (Wednesday, Oct. 30) in 217 Ablah Library. Explore citation management software, which keeps track of research, generates references and bibliographies, and organizes resources to share in collaborative team projects. EndNote, Zotero, and Mendeley will be compared.
The second workshop, “Endnote Optimization Strategies," will be from noon-1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, in 217 Ablah Library. Learn how to customize citation styles, edit parenthetical citations, and sync multiple devices in this very helpful workshop.

Japanese Culture Association will host Japanese Culture Night
Japanese Culture Association (JCA) will host a Japanese Culture Night, showcasing performances ranging from traditional dances to martial arts demonstrations. There will also be performances from Wichita Asian Festival's Ms. Japan, and K-State's Yosakoi dance group. The event will be held from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, in the CAC Theater.
The event is free for WSU students and faculty, and $5 for outside guests, and $2 for children.

Gerald Graham, Center for Management Development (CMD) professor, will break down the concepts of behavior into real world examples that you can relate to and understand. You will be coached on how to handle frustrated employees and how to influence the attitudes your employees bring to the table. You will also discuss others’ perceptions of you and they affect your ability to manage effectively.

Wichita Wurlitzer presents 'Sounds of Silents' with Clark Wilson and 'Wings'
"Sounds of Silents" with Clark Wilson accompanying "Wings," will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, in Century II Performing Arts and Convention Center Exhibition Hall.

Sound for silent movies was provided an orchestra, theatre organ, or pianist in each theatre. More than 10,000 theatre organs were built to give the movies their voices. Music soundtracks for today’s movies evolved from these live accompaniments for silent films.
"Wings," the "Star Wars" of its day, was digitally restored by a team of Paramount Pictures, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Film Archive, and Technicolor. The restored movie premiered Jan. 18, 2012, with Clark Wilson playing a live musical accompaniment. See the digitally restored blockbuster accompanied by Clark Wilson on the Wichita Wurlitzer.
Clark will accompany “Wings,” 1929’s Best Picture Academy Award winner on the Wichita Wurlitzer. The four manual / 36 rank instrument premiered Nov. 19, 1926, in the New York Paramount Theatre at Times Square, the "Crossroads of the World." After arriving in Wichita in 1968, the Wurlitzer today is a four manual / 38 rank instrument. 2019 is the Wurlitzer’s 51st year in the Heart of America. Of more than 10,000 instruments built, Wichita is home to the finest instrument built.
