Join the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in the Citywide MLK Breakfast & Parade tomorrow Saturday, Jan. 18. Bring a non-perishable item to be donated to help with hunger in the community.

Wear your WSU gear and line up is at 9:30 a.m. at the Christian Faith Centre (1130 S. Broadway, Wichita, KS 67211). The citywide parade will begin at 10 a.m. at the Christian Faith Centre and head to Chester I. Lewis Reflection Square Park (205 E. Douglas Ave., Wichita, KS 67202).

The new Student Wellness Center and Steve Clark YMCA are officially open for business at WSU. How can you sign up? Do you get a discount? What do the Wellness Center and YMCA have?

New Student Wellness Center open on campus

As of Jan. 6, Wichita State students have access to physical and mental health services all in one place. Located in the new Steve Clark YMCA building at Mike Oatman Drive and Mid-Campus Drive, Student Health Services and Counseling and Prevention Services will now share an office known as the Student Wellness Center. 

Both SHS and CAPS are open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and offer discounted services for currently enrolled students. Students can call 316-978-4SWC (4792) with questions or to schedule an appointment.

Student Health Services provides low-cost, confidential services ranging from routine and preventative care to managing acute illnesses and minor injuries. Detailed information about all services provided can be found at wichita.edu/studenthealth.

New look for myWSU login

Effective yesterday (Thursday, Jan. 16), there is a new look when logging in to myWSU.

The myWSU login has been updated and the login screen has changed.

• When accessing myWSU, select ‘Login to myWSU.’
• From the authentication window, the log in process remains the same - using your myWSU ID and Password.

Today (Friday, Jan. 17), Jessica Carey from Gartner will be on site to help you learn how to use gartner.wichita.edu. She will have open office hours from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in 233 Jabara Hall.

Cops and chips

The Wichita State University Police Department is starting a new Community Policing effort at the beginning of the spring 2020 semester on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Officers will be carrying WSUPD “poker chips” that will have our badge on the front and the WSU logo and a website address on the back. The website will direct you to locations on campus that you will be able to exchange the poker chip for a reward.  Those rewards vary by location, but could include free drinks with meals, tacos, merchandise discounts, and more. Chips are redeemable at on-campus locations only. 

In order to receive a chip, engage an officer on campus, introduce yourself, and get to know the officer. You might be rewarded with a poker chip. If you choose to keep the poker chip you may, but you must turn it in for the reward.

Be looking for our officers after the beginning of the spring 2020 semester.  Check the website for the locations of rewards. You might find something you like! Officers will have limited quantities, and may run out at anytime.

The Innovation Awards, hosted by WSU Ventures and WSU Strategic Initiatives, recognize students, faculty, staff and partners who execute programs and initiatives that greatly impact achievement of the university mission and vision. Applications for the 2020 John A. See Innovation Award will be accepted now to Friday, Jan. 31. The award was established in December 2013 by John A. See to support prototype development, which may include development of products in engineering and science, development of life-enhancing therapeutic products, creation of application of new knowledge and artistic ventures.

Student Intern placements set a new record

Wichita State placements of our spring 2020 Washington, D.C. and Topeka interns continues to grow. Our total of 15 sets a new record for total interns, and our eight Topeka interns is up from last year's record of two. Most of our postings are with legislators or interest groups, but we also have students in Topeka doing lobbying and journalism.

We are able to provide housing and transportation funding for all interns again this year, with support from Political Science donors, along with support from the Cohen Honors College and the Elliott School of Communication.

Invitation to World Trade Council dinner presentation by Grant Thornton on the ‘State of the Global Economy’

The World Trade Council of Wichita (WTCouncil), part of a strategic public-private partnership with the Barton School of Business’s Center for International Business Advancement or CIBA, will begin this new year with a dinner presentation on Thursday, Jan. 23, sponsored by Grant Thornton, on the “State of The Global Economy.”  Click here for details.

Journey East is located on the south end of the south building in Braeburn, next to Meritrust Credit Union. The restaurant serves Asian fusion cuisine and was created by the same people who own the popular Malaysia Cafe.

Enroll in new course and create assistive technology for those with disabilities

You can help bring independence to the life of a local community member with assistive technology! Enroll now for ENGR 302 Accessible Design this spring (CRN 26635). This 3-credit hour course meets from 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, and is open to ANY WSU major. The projects in this course will be multidisciplinary and will fulfill Engineer+ Service Learning credit for engineering majors. Enroll for a service-learning course in psychology

The INSPYRE research lab (directed by Samantha Gregus) is currently recruiting undergraduate mentors for a 3-hour service-learning course in psychology (PSY 416) for the spring 2020 semester.

Prior to enrolling in PSY 416 (Psychology and Problems of Society) mentors are required to: pass an interview and background check, have reliable transportation, lunch availability from noon-2 p.m. at least twice a week, and attend class on Mondays from 3:30-6 p.m.

We have a course syllabus, class readings, and paper assignments. Mentors will receive training at the beginning of the course and a grade at the end based on attendance and completion of assignments. Senior sport management student Natalie Dutton recently completed an internship with the Kansas City Chiefs and has driven to Kansas City to work all of their weekend home games.

New hydrogeology site provides unique chances for students, researchers

Wichita State can now list a 10-well hydrogeology field site among its assets for student applied learning and professional research projects.

Hydrogeology professor Andrew Swindle had the idea for the site and started contacting consulting companies to see how he could get his idea off the ground.

The site, which was finished during the fall 2019 semester, includes nine 2-inch wells and one 6-inch well that allow water flow and direction to be measured accurately.

Annual organ series workshop to feature Hentus van Rooyen

Please join us for our annual Rie Bloomfield Organ Series Organ Workshop from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, in Wiedemann Hall. Our guest performer and teacher is Hentus van Rooyen, professor of organ at Bethany College in Lindsborg. He will play a variety of pieces on the great Marcussen organ and then invite organ and piano students alike to try out the instrument! Admission is free. Refreshments will be served.

Nominations are open for outstanding adult learner

In March of 2020, the Office of Adult Learning will host the inaugural Adult Learner of the Year (ALOTY) awards ceremony. In this awards ceremony, the Office of Adult Learning will celebrate five years as an office and name an ALOTY. 

The Office of Adult Learning needs the WSU community to help find an adult learning deserving of the title. The criteria for ALOTY is below.

• 3.25 GPA at WSU 
• Displays perseverance in obtaining a degree
• Demonstrates Shocker pride
• Possesses leadership qualities

‘Visual Culture’ by Julian Kincaid in the Cadman Art Gallery - Main Space

“Visual Culture” is an art exhibit presented by student artist Julian Kincaid. His work will be on display from now to Friday, Jan. 24. This show is about the most common types of art we encounter, such as advertisements, movies, games, clothes, and packaging. This interactive walk-through will subject viewers to the many different types of marketing that surround us.

The Shocker Cheerleaders will compete in the Universal Cheerleaders Association College National Championships in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 16-20, which will feature colleges and universities from across the country. The Wichita State cheerleaders will compete in the Coed Division I section and will also compete in the Open Coed Game Day section.
