Shared Governance and the Shocker Circle
As an exercise in shared governance, a series of Shocker Circles were held in September 2019. First, “What is a Circle?” A Shocker Circle is a gathering of Shockers who, while sitting in circle, has the opportunity to speak about a single topic or run of questions of interest without interruption. A Circle facilitator supports the process and allows everyone an opportunity for full participation. A scribe records the responses.
There were three common questions that were asked during each of the 2019 Shocker Circles:
- What is something you value about the current decision-making process at the university?
- What can the university do to demonstrate respect, trust, and transparency in the decision-making process?
- How can the university best solicit input from staff, faculty, students, and administrators?
A summary report is now available.
In a continued effort to shape a culture of community and engaged listening, the trained Shocker Circle Keepers are available to host future circles. Please share your ideas or requests for future Shocker Circle topics or to learn more about how to become a Shocker Circle Keeper. Questions may be submitted to shocker.circle@wichita.edu.

Invent for the Planet 2020 call for participants
It's time for the 3rd Annual Invent for the Planet (IFTP). Join the global movement to solve the world's most pressing problems in 48 hours. This public event is open to students, faculty, staff, and community members of all disciplines. How do you make the world a better place?
The competition will be held at the John Bardo Center lobby (JBC) Feb. 14-16. Breakfast, dinner, and refreshments will be provided to participants. Specific details on the schedule and competition will be communicated to participants near the start of the event.

IFTP will challenge you to put your theory into practice by solving real-world problems. You will focus on developing products to make the world a better place for the inventors of tomorrow. IFTP aims to motivate student innovators, entrepreneurs and creative thinkers to come together, apply design thinking, and find solutions for difficult and wide-ranging problems.
You will form teams of three-to-five participants and work to design and prototype a solution for a wide range of global concerns. At the same time, students from across the globe will tackle the same issues, allowing you to collaborate and learn from peers all over the world. Mentors will be available, and teams will present their solutions to judges for a chance to win more than $500 worth in prizes.
A generous donation by Airbus allows for this event to be free of charge.

Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol
The Kansas Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol event is an opportunity for students to present their research experiences to state lawmakers in Topeka on Wednesday, March 4. Up to 40 students participate each year, representing each of the state’s eight public four-year institutions. Students should follow the link here for more information and to apply. Shocker Innovation Corps applications are due Feb. 12
The Shocker Innovation Corps nurtures and supports Wichita State entrepreneurial teams interested in accelerating their STEM ideas, research and product commercialization. Ideas / projects can originate from student or faculty work, research and institutional / industrial projects.
Applications for the Shocker I-Corps program for the spring 2020 cohort are due on Wednesday, Feb. 12. Applicants who are accepted will receive up to $2,150 in seed funding, as well as mentoring from local experts, access to entrepreneurial resources, networking with the local innovation ecosystem, and customer validation training.

Nine music faculty members present Stravinsky's ‘The Soldier’s Tale’
The School of Music invites you to experience one of Stravinsky's early theatrical works, L'Histoire du soldat, and “The Devil's Tale,” a sequel to the piece written by James M. Stephenson at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, in Miller Concert Hall, Duerksen Fine Arts Center. Performed in English and featuring nine School of Music faculty members, the afternoon concert promises to be an electrifying start to your Super Bowl Sunday.

Do you know who Bayard Rustin is?
A Black History Month film and discussion: “Brother Outsider – The Life of Bayard Rustin” will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, in 266 RSC.
Rustin shaped the Civil Rights Movement strategy as a longtime advisor to Martin Luther King Jr., and was known and respected by numerous US presidents and foreign leaders.
This documentary captures Rustin's commitment to pacifism and his visionary advocacy of Gandhian nonviolence, which made him a pioneer in the 1940s and captured King's imagination in the 1950s.
In 1963, Rustin was tapped by A. Philip Randolph to organize the historic March on Washington, the largest protest America had ever seen at the time. But Rustin was also seen as a political liability. He was openly gay during the fiercely homophobic era of the 40s and 50s and, as a result, was frequently shunned by the same movement he helped create.

Audiology doctoral students need participants for their research projects
WSU graduate students in the Doctor of Audiology program need participants for their research projects. They are studying clinical techniques in audiology for evaluating function of the ear.
Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 35, have normal hearing, have not had an ear infection in the past three months, nor had symptoms of cold, flu, or nasal allergy in the past two weeks.
Participants will receive a free comprehensive hearing evaluation and ear examination prior to testing. The testing will take about one hour. Call for presentations for Gender & Sexuality in Kansas Conference
Save the date and help spread the news that the call for presentations for the 7th Annual Gender & Sexuality in Kansas Conference on Friday, March 13. Find more information and the CFP link at https://www.wichita.edu/genderconference.
We invite submissions of original research and scholarship from any discipline.
Submit a 200-300-word summary of your proposed presentation including topic and/or research questions, methodology and a summary of findings or main themes to be addressed in the presentation.
Presentation formats include traditional presentations are oral with a length of 15-20 minutes, and include a visual aid of some sort (power point, video, poster). Workshops may be longer and usually include an interactive component. Presenters may be individuals or groups.
The deadline for submissions is Sunday, Feb. 16.
This year’s keynote will be Sarah Deer, citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma, professor at KU in the School of Public Affairs and Administration and 2019 National Women’s Hall of Fame inductee.
We hope that you will consider submitting a proposal and share information about the conference with your fellow students, colleagues and others across campus or the Wichita community who may be interested.

Deadline to nominate an adult learner quickly approaching
In March, the Office of Adult Learning will host the inaugural Adult Learner of the Year (ALOTY) awards ceremony. In this ceremony, we will not only celebrate five years as an office, but we will also name an ALOTY. We are calling on the WSU community to help us find an adult learner at Wichita State deserving of the title. The deadline to nominate an adult learner is Friday, Jan. 31.
A student is considered an adult learner at WSU if they are an undergraduate earning their first bachelor’s degree and be either:
- 24 years or older or
- Military or Veteran student or
- Independent status
ALOTY criteria:
- 00 GPA at WSU (Extenuating circumstances can be reviewed)
- Displays perseverance in obtaining a degree
- Demonstrates Shocker Pride
- Possesses leadership qualities

Marcus Wright's video work keeps Wichita State athletics in the highlights
Marcus Wright started as a reluctant creator of athletics videos at Wichita State in 2018. He worked his way from Wichita State student to Major League Baseball photographer and considered that his specialty.
“The whole video thing scared me at first,” he said.
Two years later, Wright, as digital media coordinator, is in charge of creating the hype and recap videos that get the Shocker men’s basketball message out on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. His video after Wichita State’s win over Mississippi on Jan. 4 attracted almost 12,000 views on Twitter.
