When you walk on to Wichita State’s campus — whether physically or virtually – we want you to feel supported, safe and empowered to report concerns. Throughout the history of Wichita State, we have built infrastructure at Wichita State to support not only our students’ minds, but also their physical, emotional, and mental health.
If at any time you are feeling threatened, harassed, intimidated or unfairly treated, it is important that you report the situation to the appropriate party.

Alert about WSU scholarship spam email
The Office of Financial Aid received notification that a spam email is being distributed announcing a scholarship opportunity with Wichita State University, and it contained a link to the “application.”
As an important reminder, our office will only send communication through means such as our official email, finaid@wichita.edu, staff email ending with wichita.edu, or through Shocker Blast.
If you received this email and clicked on the “application” link, please change your account password immediately. This spam email has also been brought to the attention of the ITS department.

Undergraduate STEM majors are encouraged to apply for the Goldwater Scholarship
Sophomores and juniors with a strong commitment to a research career in the sciences, mathematics and/or engineering are encouraged to apply to the competitive and prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Visit the Goldwater Scholarship website for more information about the application and who is eligible to apply.

Shocker Support Locker Holiday Care Packages
For the upcoming holiday break, the Shocker Support Locker is providing Holiday Care Packages to those who will be needing food and other items during the Thanksgiving Break and upcoming Holiday Closedown. The locker will be packing boxes at a higher item limit for those needing the care package. You will be able to select items they are needing for the care package to get them through the holiday breaks.
Items such as cheese, sandwich meat, bread, eggs, rice (white & brown), Ramen, Instant Oatmeal, hygiene items and many more items will be available. The Shocker Support Locker is wanting to make sure that we can still provide the Shocker Support Locker items to you during the shutdown of campus for the holidays.
Orders for the Holiday Care Packages will start on Nov. 18.

Generation Lead Podcast Series featuring Kennedy Rogers!
Current graduate student Alexus Scott and Student Involvement has partnered together to conduct and produce a podcast series focusing on the development of our next generation's leaders. The podcast series is called Generation Lead and features voices from current WSU students, staff, faculty, and community partners.
Due to the recent virtual change in in-person programming, the podcast series provides high impact dialogue that empowers, challenges, and motivates a generation to lead and take space in their personal capacities with great measure. You can check out previous and upcoming episodes via streaming platforms like Anchor, Spotify, Breaker, and Google Podcasts.
Kennedy Rogers is no rookie when it comes to leading others effectively, and she’s truly learned to embody the definition of leadership. Often, when we possess strong leadership capabilities it must come with a balance. Through the development of this episode, we’re hoping to give you an inside scoop into the development of this series. Kennedy’s going to give us some background in her leadership journey and some tips that has made her journey worthwhile while managing new projects.

Scholarships help students serving their community reach their goals
Seven members of the Wichita State VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) Fellows and AmeriCorps Fellows programs were fortunate to receive $2,000 scholarships from offices at Wichita State. The Wichita State AmeriCorps programs partnered with the Office of Financial Aid and the Graduate School to award scholarships to students who are serving or have served as AmeriCorps members.
“Being awarded the AmeriCorps scholarship has helped me immensely,” said Shea Witherspoon. “It has allowed me to further my education in the social work field, so one day I can give back to the community that gave so much to me.”
Members who successfully finish their year of service qualify for a Segal Education Award worth up to $6,000 or a cash stipend.
AmeriCorps and VISTA members provide service to nonprofits across Kansas who are working to move people out of poverty and strengthen their local communities. Many of the members simultaneously attend classes during their service year.
Undergraduate scholarship winners are Abigail Faflick, Medalia Juarez, ShaiLyn Malsky, Teresa Olsen, and Shea Witherspoon. Graduate scholarship winners are Anita Martinez and Felicia Smith.

CAPS is recruiting volunteer actors!
Counseling and Prevention Services is recruiting volunteer actors to perform in the sexual violence prevention training being developed for WSU. We are looking for students to be in short clips, as well as several narrators who are willing to speak and appear on camera throughout the training. You will help to make the training more immersive and interesting!

CAPS Training Actor Application
Enroll for an in-person service-learning course in psychology!
The INSPYRE research lab directed by Dr. Samantha Gregus is currently recruiting undergraduate mentors for a 3-hour service-learning course in psychology (PSY 416) for the spring 2021 semester.
Prior to enrolling in PSY 416 (Psychology and Problems of Society), mentors are required to: pass an interview and background check, have reliable transportation, lunch availability from 11 a.m.-2pm at least twice a week, and attend class on Mondays from 3:30-5:30 pm.
We have a course syllabus, class readings, and paper assignments. Mentors will receive training at the beginning of the course and a grade at the end based on attendance and completion of assignments. We are interested in recruiting mentors from any college and major. For more information, please contact the INSPYRE research lab at inspyre@wichita.edu ASAP.

Presentation Title: Cost Estimating, Managing Cost and Affordability in New Program Development

Abstract
A high-level overview of Affordability as viewed by the DoD acquisition community and some insights to how suppliers can mirror that focus within their development programs. Competition in aerospace markets is fierce. Customers in these markets are more sophisticated than ever. And on defense programs, gone are the days of performance at any cost. Today’s defense department is developing a cost-conscious culture focused on Affordability. Affordability has become a watch word and is on par with schedule and performance.
Jeff Hoetmer is a Principal Engineer at Bell Helicopter working in the Affordability Department. While working on an undergrad degree in Industrial Engineering at Wichita State, Jeff’s first professional job was as a time study analyst at Pizza Hut Corporate Headquarters. Wanting to work in aerospace, Jeff sought and landed a job in the Industrial Engineering department at Beechcraft, working in the Manufacturing Hours Control Group as Project Analyst.
After graduation, Jeff accepted a position at Cessna Aircraft Company as an Associate Industrial Engineer supporting shop floor manufacturing operations. For the next 10 years he continued to support manufacturing operations holding assignments in small parts, major sub-assemblies, primary and final assembly, flight operations, paint, interiors, and pre-delivery. Jeff’s last position in direct production support was as Group Lead for Industrial Engineering in the Aircraft Completion Center.
In 2001, Jeff’s career took a turn and he began supporting special projects and developing a Decision Support and Simulation team. From there, he was promoted to Manager of the Center of Excellence in Industrial Engineering. Following a few years management, he spent two years in the Textron Black Belt program, becoming certified in 2007.
After certification Jeff repatriated back into Industrial/Process Engineering supporting New Programs Development, Automation Technology and Strategy (2012-2015), AD Process Engineering Specialist – Denali Program (2015-2018), and finally, AD Process Engineer for New Programs and New Technology R&D (2018-2020).
In June 2020, Bell Helicopter opened an office in Wichita and Jeff took a position at Bell in the Affordability Department, Focused on Affordability of the V-280 Valor, Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft, production and assembly. Jeff supports IPTs including Optimization for Manufacturing initiatives, the Assembly Build team cost out initiatives, and the Manufacturing Innovation team efforts to manage and control product cost. Jeff uses parametric, analogy, and engineering build-up cost methods to develop should cost for manufactured product and processes.

CAPS is looking for volunteers for a focus group
Wichita State Counseling and Prevention Services is seeking volunteers for a 90-minute focus group. These 90-minute collaborative zoom sessions focus on substance use on campus and how it is best addressed. Working audio and video is required.
