The power of 'We': Barton School of Business dean reflects on early successes
When Dr. Larisa Genin arrived as dean of the W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State University in June 2019, she brought with her experience, passion and, most importantly, a commitment to collaboration. She credits the recent accomplishments of the Barton School to this team mentality.
“None of this would be possible without our team,” says Genin. “They’re the key to this success. Their intelligence, passion and dedication are what make the Barton School prosper. It’s important to provide a culture where all can thrive, and that’s what we’re doing.”
Students share study-abroad experiences in video
Hear from shockers about their study abroad experiences in this new video. Shockers share their experiences about why they studied abroad and how it impacted their lives. The video includes a showcase of photos from many different study abroad programs and shockers over the years.
Freshmen and senior surveys available
The CLA (Collegiate Learning Assessment) and NSSE (National Survey of Student Engagement) assessments are now in progress. Freshman and seniors, if selected to participate, you can find a link in Blackboard. Click on the link to find out how you might be eligible for a $25 QuikTrip or $25 Shocker Dollars card.
Graduate School to close early today
The Graduate School will close for the day at 3 p.m. today for staff development. There is an after-hours dropbox outside our door in 107 Jardine Hall for anyone who needs to drop off materials. The office will reopen as usual on at 8 a.m. Monday, March 8.
Service-Learning Showcase seeks submissions
The Service-Learning Showcase is a unique opportunity for students who participate in service-learning through applied learning opportunities to showcase their experience through a research or reflective poster about the application of their course work to current community issues. This year the showcase will be held in a digital format and judged by a team of community partner leaders.
The showcase is an open forum for students to interact with faculty/staff, community partners and other students to engage in conversation about Wichita State University's commitment to the public good. Awards are presented in the following categories:
- Outstanding Overall Service-Learning Project — $150 scholarship to winning entry
- Innovation and Creativity in Problem Solving — $100 scholarship to winning entry
- Community Impact/ Community Choice — $100 scholarship to winning entry
- Collaboration and Leadership in Service-Learning — $100 scholarship to winning entry
Submissions are due on April 1.

Entries now open for 2021 Edible Book Festival
Edible Book Festival is back! University Libraries invites all to join in on this culinary creation contest for a chance to win great local prizes. Enter online by April 1 at libraries.wichita.edu/ediblebookfestival. There you can find contest rules and entry photos from previous contests.
Basic rules are as follows:
- This virtual event features contestants creating edible art based on their favorite literature.
- Four prizes will be given — three based on judging and one on a popular vote.
- Once created, contestants can upload photos to our website by April 1.
- Anyone can then vote for the People's Choice winner April 5-8.
- Winners will take home prizes announced April 9.
Register for the 2021 virtual Gender & Sexuality in Kansas Conference
Registration is now open for the eighth annual Gender & Sexuality in Kansas Conference, which will be held virtually on from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 12.
Whether you plan to drop in and out to attend conference sessions or keynotes, or if you plan to the full day, attendees must you pre-register in order to receive conference Zoom links. (Note: Zoom authentication will be required, so you must create a free Zoom account if you don't yet have one). Pre-registration will be open until midnight on Monday, March 8. Conference links will be sent to those who register by Thursday, March 11.

Without inclusion, diversity initiatives may not be enough in science
Dr. Chandler Puritty will be speaking at 3:30 p.m. March 10 on "Without inclusion diversity initiatives may not be enough in Science," based on her article that appeared in Science magazine in 2017. Shocker Baseball hosts a three-game series versus Dixie State this weekend, March 5-7. First pitch times are set for 3 p.m., 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively. Your 8-2 Shocker volleyball team is back in action at Charles Koch Arena this weekend with a two-match series against conference opponent, Memphis. Games are at 7 p.m. March 5 and 1 p.m. March. Shocker students receive free admission to all matches with a valid Shocker ID.

WWSU Scholarship applications due May 31
Women of Wichita State University (WWSU) Scholarship/Fellowship Applications for 2021-2022 Academic Year must be received by May 31, 2021. WWSU administers the WSU Dames, CUW and the WWSU Scholarships. Preference will be given to non-traditional female students (graduate or undergraduate) with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Recipients must be enrolled in at least six credit hours per semester. For more information including guidelines and applications, go to wichita.edu/WWSUscholarship.
Women of Wichita State University was formed in the fall of 2018 by the combination of two groups: the Wichita State University Women's Association, founded in 1928; and the Council of University Women found in 1930. The purpose of the group is to serve the interests of the university, to provide student scholarships, and to promote social interaction and a sense of community among its members.
Shocker Store will be open before Sunday home baseball games
The Shocker Store’s Braeburn Square location will now be open on Sundays for home Shocker baseball games. The store will open the two hours prior to the first opening pitch and then close upon the start of the game. Go Shockers!

Share your matrilineal memories
Share your unique stories of home and be a part of this research visualization, a collaboration between the Ulrich Museum and the Departments of Dance and Sociology. “Sharing Matrilineal Memories at WSU,” the fourth exhibition in the "Solving for X = Identity" series is primarily focused on collecting memories of home for Wichita State students, faculty, staff, retirees, and alumni.

Volunteer opportunity with Wichita Clean Streams
Join Wichita Clean Stream’s Wichita River Cleanup Crew for a morning of cleaning up the area around the Arkansas and Little Arkansas rivers. Gloves and materials will be provided. Volunteers will meet at a location determined before the event. During this event, all volunteers will be expected to wear a mask and abide by physical distancing guidelines set forth by the university and Wichita Clean Streams.
