Don't get shocked: Know the facts about electrical safety

Electrical Fire Safety Tips

More than 400 people die from electrical home fires annually in the United States. Mike Strickland, director, Environmental, Health & Safety, wants to remind the campus of some electrical fire safety tips. Those safety tips are in the graphic above.

Overloaded extension cords, power strips and outlets are one of the leading causes of fires in college housing.

Office of Financial Aid asks ‘Did you know?'

Financial Aid Did You Know

During 2017-18, the Office of Financial Aid received more than 20,000 free applications for Federal Student Aid (FAFSAs) – the highest number of FAFSAs ever received at Wichita State in a single aid year!

While we reached a new record last year, we need your help to encourage students to complete a 2018-19 FAFSA for the upcoming year.  To date, we have a little more than 300 students who may be eligible for a Pell Grant who have not yet completed the FAFSA process.

Through today (Thursday, Aug. 16) and Monday through Thursday, Aug. 20-23, our office will remain open until 6 pm. Remember, we need a 2016 federal tax return and / or income information in order to complete a FAFSA for the upcoming year. Send your students our way!

Daily website update

The web support site has handled 284 support tickets to date with an average time to completion at 3.6 hours.

Remember that there are come-and-go triage open lab session on the schedule for 9-11 a.m. today in Jabara Hall Room 122. There will be no Friday triage open lab because of the president's address. CMS trainings and open labs are on the schedule through the end of September.

Tip of the Day: Guiding new students with the Interactive Map

With the start of school approaching, we'll have hundreds of new students on campus who need help finding buildings and services. This is a perfect opportunity to drive people to an extremely useful feature of our new website: the interactive campus map at wichita.edu/locate.  (The map is also available at wichita.edu/map)

On GPS-enabled devices, users can search for a building name and then get walking directions to any WSU building from their exact location. For departments entertaining campus visitors, you can provide direct links to your building's location through the Share link, or, by checking the Parking and Transit layer, provide driving directions to a specific parking lot.

That's not just true for the main campus. All WSU satellite facilities are represented on the map. Just click on the Campus Views button on desktop (or Map Links / Campus Views on mobile) to see the additional locations.

Housing and Residence staff will be out of the office to assist with move-in

Housing and Residence Life

The Housing and Residence Life central office staff will be away from their offices and therefore unavailable throughout the business day today (Thursday, Aug. 16) and Friday, Aug. 17, because of move-in activities. We will respond to inquiries as quickly as possible once move-in activities conclude. Staff will continue be available at the front desks of both Shocker Hall and The Flats at WSU to assist with housing inquiries as needed during this time.

Hoops attendance tops American Conference leaderboard

Koch Arena inside

Wichita State led the American Athletic Conference and ranked 34th nationally in men's basketball attendance during the 2017-18 season, according to the NCAA's official year-end report.

Unofficially, WSU was one of just nine schools that sold out every home date and one of only six that did it in a venue larger than 10,000 seats.

Fans wishing to purchase new men's basketball season tickets will soon have an opportunity. The Shockers Ticket Office will have a limited supply of men's basketball season tickets for sale later this month. Move to the front of line by signing up for the waiting list. For details call or stop by the Shocker Ticket Office (316-978-FANS) inside Charles Koch Arena during business hours (M-F, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.).

Community involvement opportunity

WAMPO

Volunteers are needed to help manually count bicycle and pedestrian activity across 35 sites in the Wichita Metro area.  The annual event, sponsored by the Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WAMPO) will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, and noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22. This important event relies heavily on the commitment of community volunteers to gather data about how our network of paths and lanes are being used.

According to Tricia Thomas, WAMPO communication's manager, one of the greatest challenges facing the bicycle and pedestrian field is the lack of documentation on usage and demand. Without accurate and consistent demand and usage figures, it is difficult to measure the positive benefits of bicycle and pedestrian investments, especially when compared to the other transportation modes such as the private automobile.

As such, this event is the only source for regional-scale bicycle and pedestrian data. The results of this data are then used to guide investments throughout the regional transportation system.

So, please consider volunteering! This annual event is a real opportunity for local residents to become involved in a piece of the regional transportation planning process.  As we know, bicycle and pedestrian investments stimulate the economy, public health and the overall quality of life in a variety of ways. Communities that invest in these facilities inherently attract people and businesses so it's good for everyone.  Register now!
