WSU students invent temporary biometric tracking tattoo
Wichita State students Jared Goering, Ryan Becker and Spencer Steinert are working together to positively impact lives through wearable technology. Together they created a product called Cyfive and have been perfecting it for the past three years.
Cyfive is a biometric tracking temporary tattoo that lasts around three days after being applied to the skin, and it is able to track a person's heart rate.
Cyfive has already garnered a lot of interest. In April, the team won fourth place in the Shocker New Venture competition. And this month, Goering and Becker were among only three college teams nationwide invited to participate in Red Bull's Innovation Summit in New York City. The event was highlighted in a recent article by Forbes.

Seeking First Year Research Experience (FRYE) faculty mentors
The Cohen Honors College in partnership with the Department of Chemistry are excited to announce the launch of the First Year Research Experience (FYRE) pilot program. The mission of this first FYRE, FYRE in STEM, program, is to build a community of STEM students, faculty and professionals from various STEM backgrounds to support young STEM majors or potential majors as they form identities as members of the scientific community, thus improving the likelihood that they will persist to graduation.
To allow the FYRE in STEM program to be a success, we are looking for dedicated research mentors from across campus who can provide an appropriate short-term STEM research project in the spring 2019 semester. Questions may be directed to Heidi Bell at heidi.bell@wichita.edu or 978-3315.

FYRE Faculty Mentor Application
Faculty Senate to hold first fall meeting on Monday, Aug. 27
Faculty Senate will have its first senate meeting at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27, in the Shirley Beggs Ballroom, third floor, RSC. Senators will welcome about 60 new faculty members to WSU. The Faculty Senate Agenda will include the role of faculty in Kansas Board of Regents initiatives including Faculty Review / workload. The continuing work of Faculty Senate Committee charges will also be discussed. All senate meetings are open to interested faculty or members of WSU.
The Faculty Senate serves as the representative forum for the entire faculty of the university and is charged with representing faculty in university governance. Representatives are elected from the School of Business, the Colleges of Applied Studies, Engineering, Fine Arts, Health Professions, the three divisions of Liberal Arts & Sciences and the University Libraries. Faculty can find their representative on the Senate Website https://wsu.news/facsenwebsite. The senate is open to hearing comments, concerns or questions related to faculty issues, and these can be submitted on a link found on the Senate Website.
It's going to be another great academic year. The senate looks forward to working as a team with the WSU community to support the mission of the university to be an essential educational, cultural and economic driver for Kansas and the greater public good.

Cuban artist to give public lecture today (Thursday, Aug. 23)
Cuban artist Nestor Siré will deliver a public lecture at 4 p.m. today (Thursday, Aug. 23), in 210 McKnight Art Center West. Siré's exhibition “Bien_Común Commons” opens from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, for a preview and gallery remarks at ShiftSpace, 416 S. Commerce St., Suite 102.
The exhibition explores Cuba's informal economy by documenting two illicit information-sharing operations. Millions of Cubans use a “sneakernet” called El Paquete Semanal (“the weekly package”), a collection of digital material that substitutes for broadband Internet. Another illegal information service known as the Street Net connects gamers and other community members through a hybrid mesh network supported by homemade routers.
“Bien_Común Commons” is curated in collaboration with Claudia Pederson, assistant professor of art history in new media & technology. The exhibition will also be open from 6-10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, for a Final Friday reception at ShiftSpace, a downtown student gallery funded by the WSU Student Government Association.

Engage WSU: A day of public service sharing
Engage WSU: A day of public service sharing will be held from 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in the Marcus Welcome Center. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m.
Engage WSU is presented by the Public Policy & Management Center, Hugo Wall School of Public Affairs and the Division of Diversity & Community Engagement.
The event will bring together university, public, nonprofit and community leaders for current research and knowledge exchange in public service. To see the agenda and more information, go to Engage WSU.

The web support site has handled 344 support tickets to date with an average time to completion at 4.0 hours.
There is a come-and-go open lab session on the schedule for 3-5 p.m. today in Jabara Hall Room 122 and another one from 9-11 a.m. tomorrow (Friday). CMS trainings and open labs are on the schedule through the end of Septemeber.

Tip of the Day: A word about snippets We've got a slew of flexible design elements available for the Landing Page template (and for the Additional Content area on standard content pages), but while snippets are flexible, that flexibility has limits. The Landing Page Snippets guide (also linked in the Add-Ons in the CMS) seeks to lay out exactly what the snippets can be used for, what types of content they display and what combinations work well. The closer you adhere to the intended display, the happier you're going to be working in the CMS. For instance: If a snippet example doesn't show a photo, then it's likely not designed to display a photo. If text is centered in the example, then it's likely that the text is coded to be centered text. We're not saying that you can't or shouldn't experiment -- but, in our experience, it's better to adjust the content to the snippet options available rather than the other way around. If you are experimenting, remember to save a version from time to time in case things go south. |

This course is provided for leaders who supervise employees (UP, USS, students), and
will focus on the overall employment relationship. It will provide guidance on managing
performance, setting expectations, how to identify when an employee has not met expectations,
and how to effectively address those concerns. This could include concerns with attendance,
job performance, conflict with coworkers, etc. This training will also introduce you
to tools to use to effectively document an unmet expectation. If you have questions,

Meet and greet for staff who order promotional products, T-shirts and logo apparel
Mark your calendars to come and meet all seven of our new contracted vendors for promotional products from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, in 265 RSC. They will be in attendance to introduce themselves, hand out information about their businesses and samples of promotional products. Navigating University Libraries: A Welcomefest event!
Want to learn more about University Libraries? Attend one of our “Navigating University Libraries” tours during Welcomefest! One will be held from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, and noon-1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31. The tour begins by the Circulation Desk on the main floor of Ablah Library, followed by an orientation to online services and collections in 217 Ablah. Services include wireless network, 3D scanning and printing, and other technology.

This 15-hour graduate certificate program is now eligible for employee tuition assistance. Walk A Mile event coming Tuesday, Aug. 28
Student Activities Council and Interfraternity Council present Walk A Mile, an event geared to bring awareness to, and action against sexual assault, rape and gender violence. Men will wear heels while women wear tennis shoes to walk a mile in each other's shoes. There will be speakers from the community before the walk, along with food provided by the Wichita WagonMasters. Preregistration is open until 11:45 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27, at Walk A Mile.
