Gifts from Cargill, Capitol Federal add $1.75 million to business building campaign
Two companies, Cargill and Capitol Federal®, have contributed a total of $1.75 million to the campaign to build a new home for the W. Frank Barton School of Business, taking the amount raised so far to $28.5 million.
Cargill pledged $1 million to the WSU Foundation for the project and Capitol Federal Foundation® committed $750,000.
WSU Foundation President and CEO Elizabeth King announced the gifts Thursday night, Oct. 25, at the President's Club celebration, held each year to recognize some of Wichita State's most generous supporters.
Nov. 1 Town Hall to feature the value of a liberal arts and sciences education
Come to the Town Hall at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the CAC Theater for Fairmount College's town hall dedicated entirely to discussing the value of a liberal arts and sciences education.
The participants include Robert Litan, a nonresident senior fellow at Brookings Institution, as moderator.
Panelists are:
- Jean Griffith, associate professor, department of English, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
- Debbie Haynes, retired family physician and chair of the WSU Foundation Board
- Eric F. Melgren, United States District Judge, District of Kansas
- Jay Price, professor and chair, Department of History, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
The last 15 minutes of the program will be open to audience questions. A wine and cheese reception will take place after the town hall.
Please encourage your students to attend; you might consider awarding extra credit for their attendance. This event is also open to the public.
Senates to hold joint meeting today (Monday, Oct. 29)
The University Support Staff, Unclassified Professional and Faculty senates will hold a joint senate meeting from 3:30-5 p.m. today (Monday, Oct. 29) in 208 Hubbard Hall.
Message from President Bardo: Pride, humility, awe and joy
This may be a bit sentimental, but I want to share my feelings after extensive visits around campus last week.
I used my new mobility scooter, freshly clad in Shocker yellow and black, to go from Morrison Hall to the Experiential Engineering Building to Koch Arena, Rhatigan Student Center and points in between.
I stopped by offices, talked with staff and students and visited 10 or so buildings. I watched the women's basketball practice, had lunch with students, had a chance to talk with old friends and see pictures of a proud grandpa's grandbaby.
Because of the busy schedule, this all came in a rush and made a stream of impressions. I was overwhelmed with feelings of pride, humility, awe and joy all at the same time, because of what we have been able to do together.
I am writing this note simply to say “thank you.” Thank you for the intelligence, energy, hard work and caring for others that you bring to campus every day. What is more, the best is yet to come.
Whether you are a student, faculty, staff member or innovation partner, thank you for doing your part in making this university worthy of the people we serve. Thanks to you, we have a university we can all be proud of. You make it a GREAT DAY TO BE A SHOCKER!

Pep Rally and bonfire set for today (Monday, Oct. 29)
Wichita State will tip off the college basketball season with a pep rally and bonfire
at Braeburn Square today (Monday, Oct. 29). This family-friendly, all ages, free event
is set for 6:30 p.m.
The event will feature special appearances by the men's and women's basketball teams, spirit
squad, WuShock, Shocker Sound and Coaches Gregg Marshall and Keitha Adams.
Food trucks will be on hand for dinner and include LumpiaPalooza, LoLo's Crepes, The
Brown Box Bakery and Drink Local Truck.
Parking advisory
All SASO parking lots (see map at Wichita.edu/parking – Athletic Parking) will close at 4 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 30) for a home basketball game. A text alert will be send as a reminder, too.
On Friday, Nov. 2, 150 parking stalls on the west side of Koch Arena will be blocked off for Black and Yellow Day.
Open Enrollment is nearly over!
With just days left in Open Enrollment, hundreds of benefits-eligible state employees have still not submitted their elections for 2019. Supervisors in all departments are asked to help spread the word, particularly to employees who may not have regular email or computer access as part of their position at WSU. An updated list of employees who have not yet submitted their enrollment will be sent out today.
If you have not yet completed your online enrollment for 2019, and have questions or need help navigating the portal, attend a lab session for assistance from the Total Rewards team. Labs will be held daily through the 31st (schedule below). Submitting an enrollment typically takes no more than 20 minutes, though there may be a wait if there is high traffic. If a wait occurs, preference will be given to those who have registered in myTraining. As always, information pertaining to Open Enrollment 2019 can be found online at Open Enrollment.

Sign Up for Quality Matters Training!
Have you taken the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric class? If you have not taken the class, would you like to do so? An in-person version of the APPQMR class will be offered on Monday, Dec. 10, in 261 Rhatigan Student Center.
The class is open to those who familiar with Quality Matters, and those who are not. Because a new version of the QM rubric was recently released, the class will focus on the new version. Therefore, even if you have taken the course previously, feel free to sign-up for the Dec. 10 class.
Normally, the APPQMR class is taught in an online format and takes two weeks to complete. This all-day (9 a.m.-6 p.m.) class on Dec. 10 will allow participants to complete the class in one day!

Resources are available to help students finish successfully!
As students are working on final assignments for the semester, it's important to share information about resources available to help them submit the best work they can. Resources like the Writing Center, Math Lab and Center for Excellence in Oral Communication are great resources for students to use as they work on final projects.
If they don't know where to go for help, direct them to the new Shocker Learning Center in 107 Lindquist Hall. Some quick tips for helping students finish successfully include visiting instructor office hours for clarification on class content, forming study groups, and cleaning and organizing a dedicated study space for the final few weeks of the semester.
Lunch-n-Learn to feature Arta Kabashi of Proquest
University Libraries is hosting a lunch-n-learn for faculty, staff and students from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov, 6, on the lower level of Ablah Library.
Arta Kabashi of Proquest will highlight several of the more than 70 primary source databases that were recently added as a subscription by the library. These databases cover a wide range of diverse and interdisciplinary areas including anthropological fieldwork, African American studies, human rights, historical newspapers, Native American studies, human rights, women's studies, border and migration studies, environmental studies, global issues, American history, British history, LGTB studies, immigrant letters and diaries, and many more. Incorporating primary sources into research is the focus of the presentation.

Shock Doc features Ashtyn Rottinghaus
Ashtyn Rottinghaus, junior business major, is the next featured students in the Shock Doc series. Rottinghaus is a member of Student Ambassador Society, involved in Greek Life and in the Barton International Group.
She spent time studying abroad in Frances this past summer through support from the Cohen Enhancement Scholarship from the Cohen Honors College. The admissions team shares stories like hers with prospective students to help them understand the world of opportunities that await them at Wichita State.

Don't miss a great guest speaker on Thursday, Nov. 1
Glenn Martinez
Glenn Martinez, professor of Hispanic Linguistics at The Ohio State University, will present research on Language and Latino Health at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in 201 Ahlberg Hall.
Martínez, an internationally recognized scholar of Hispanic linguistics, will talk about addressing language barriers in healthcare contexts for Latinos in the United States. This talk presents an updated view of the ways that language use affects healthcare, and how health professionals can engage in language training that empowers both the patient and the provider.
This will be of particular interest to students and faculty interested in interpreting in healthcare settings, language and social justice, Latino studies, linguistics, communication studies, education and public health.
The presentation is free and there will be refreshments. Everyone is welcome.
Seeking volunteers to judge WISE
The College of Engineering is seeking faculty and staff to serve as judges for the Wallace Invitational for Scholarships in Engineering (WISE) from 9-11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in the Rhatigan Student Center.
WISE is a scholarship competition for high school seniors who are interested in studying engineering or computer science at Wichita State. Judges will observe a small group of four or five competitors in a design challenge, and will score each participant in areas such as leadership, teamwork, communication and problem-solving. No knowledge or background in engineering is needed to serve as a judge.
Judges will need to attend a training session on Nov. 12, 13 or 14, and can select a training session option on the volunteer sign up form. If you are interested in judging, sign up by Friday, Nov. 2 at Judge WISE.

Shockers win team title, Koskei takes individual
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Winny Koskei paced the women's Shocker team to a cross country team title, while claiming an individual
title Thursday morning at the Golf Club at Audubon Park.
Redshirt sophomore Winny Koskei won the 2018 American Athletic Conference championship 6K with a time of 21:51.96,
15 seconds faster than second place finisher Svenja Ojstersek of SMU.
Wichita State women won the team title with 63 points, two points ahead of second place Tulsa. The Shockers placed four athletes in the top-20 including three in the top-15. Rebekah Topham was the second Shocker across the finish line in third place with a time of 22:16.50.

‘Before You File: Understanding the Patent Process'
University Libraries is holding the workshop “Before You File: Understanding the Patent Process” from 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, in 217 Ablah Library. This workshop will introduce inventors to types of patent applications, patent eligibility, parts of a patent application, how to find legal assistance, and understanding the basic patent examination process.
This workshop is the first in the Entrepreneurship Research Series to be held this semester. The workshops in this series are open to the public.
