Construction begins on Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College in Shocker Hall

Honors College

Construction begins this week on the Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College in Shocker Hall to create additional student space and a seminar room. Honors offices have moved to 113 Hubbard Hall during construction.

The Cohen Honors College offers specialized courses and curricula for honors students as well as research, service-learning, and leadership opportunities open to all students. In fall 2017, the Honors College Student Council identified the need for a front door facing academic buildings and more student space to accommodate increased enrollment and more clearly welcome the campus into Honors. Since that time, the number of Honors students has grown to 620, representing more than 90 areas of study. A new gift pledge in summer 2018 increases scholarship support for students with financial need or who are members of minority groups underrepresented in higher education in Kansas.

This fall, services to students who are not college members increased. Honors launched a new NSF grant-funded summer program, piloted a new first-year research experience program, continued undergraduate research and creative activity grant funding, and supported faculty development of high-impact practices such as study abroad. We look forward to additional student and faculty participation as a result of our expanded space in Shocker Hall.

A temporary construction fence will be placed around the construction area which will eliminate parking on the sidewalk between Morrison Lane and the current Honors portion of Shocker Hall. This project is expected to be complete by July 2019. Construction is supported by a new Honors student program fee effective fall 2019.

Join Martha Shawver in supporting our students!

Holiday Card Scholarship Fund

Though we are a bit past the holiday season, it’s always a good time to generate support for WSU students. With that in mind, we are making a final appeal to the generosity of faculty and staff members to make a gift to the Holiday Card Endowed Scholarship Fund

Join Martha Shawver as she adds to her longstanding tradition of support for this important student scholarship. With the hope of inspiring others to give, she has established a matching gift of $250 if 10 more donors contribute before the end of the campaign this week.

Shawver spent time in many important roles during her 30-plus years with WSU, serving as both a faculty member and administrator. It is her passion for helping students succeed that has driven her support of the scholarship, even in the years since her retirement.

Please click here and help us unlock this challenge by giving a gift today. Your participation is more important than the level at which you give. Donations from just 10 more people will activate the full $250 match. If you aren’t able to donate, make an impact by visiting the Holiday Card Endowed Scholarship Fund campaign site and sharing it with friends and colleagues. Your promotion may lead to the gift that helps us achieve the goal.

For more information about the Holiday Card Endowed Scholarship Fund, or to learn more about conducting a fundraising campaign through the WSU Foundation’s crowdfunding platform, please contact Aaron Winter at aaron.winter@wichita.edu or 316-978-3803.
