Activation Teams (AcT) are the foundation of the strategic planning process at Wichita State University. Each AcT is has been assigned one of the on-goals to critically review.
Teams will conduct a SWOT analysis, complete an asset map and host critical conversations related to their assigned goal. Teams will ultimately report their findings to the Strategic Planning Committee for review and consideration.
When possible, ideas will be shared with responsible campus partners in hopes of informing university practice and activities.
Activation Teams will meet monthly throughout the academic year. To join a team, complete the activation team form.
Shared Governance Discussion Groups coming soon
During the town hall meeting in September, the university gathered feedback on four strategic priority areas. Priority No. 1 is to advance a culture of shared governance built on trust and integrity.
The university will hold discussion groups from Jan. 31-Feb. 7, to bring faculty, staff, administration and student employees together to discuss how we all can make an impact through shared governance. This will be a guided discussion to share with each other, learn from one another, and generate thoughts about shared governance at the university.
The discussion group will go through a process to:
- Identify the current perception of shared governance at the university.
- Identify how faculty, staff, and administration participate in shared governance.
- Identify who you think makes decisions, who is consulted, and who must approve decisions that are made.
- Vision what shared governance could be at the university.
There will be discussion groups scheduled at varying times as shown below.
Thursday, Jan. 31: 9-10:30 a.m., 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., 1:30-3 p.m.
Friday, Feb. 1: 2-3:30 p.m.
Monday, Feb. 4: 9-10:30 a.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 5: 9-10:30 a.m., 12-1:30 p.m., 2- 3:30 p.m.
Friday, Feb. 7: 9-10:30 a.m.

We will consolidate the input from each discussion group, identify consistent themes, and recommend a plan that will be shared at open forums to ensure that it accurately reflects the input from the discussion groups and to provide an opportunity for feedback.
Duo Security Software demonstration for Administrative Processes and Procedures
WSU is required to deploy Duo Security to all faculty and staff. Attending this demonstration is highly recommended. Please register at myTraining to attend this session from 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, in 211 Hubbard Hall.
All administrative assistants / staff, executive assistants, college and department business managers and more are encouraged to attend.
The purpose of this training is:
- To introduce Duo Security
- Provide training on registering on Duo, and
- Frequently asked questions
Duo Security is a two-factor authentication service, which adds a second layer of security to your WSU login account. Duo enhances security by requiring the use of a secondary device at login to verify your identity, which will ensure that others cannot access your account by obtaining your password.
Is your space heater authorized?
Facilities Services, formerly known as Physical Plant, is in the process of ensuring our campus is in compliance with Policy 11.27/HVAC Systems Standards, which went into effect on Dec. 10, 2018. Please review this policy carefully via the following link.
Facilities Services staff will soon begin going through buildings removing any previously authorized space heaters that are being utilized where building temperatures are in compliance with the new policy.
An important component of the HVAC Systems Standards policy states that space heaters are not allowed on campus, due to their excessive energy consumption and the safety hazards they can create. We ask that faculty and staff begin removing personal space heaters from our campus.
If you believe a learning or working space on our campus is too hot or cold, please submit a work order request. Upon receipt of the work order request, Facilities Services staff will respond in a timely manner.
Please work with Facilities Services through this transition phase to ensure compliance Policy 11.27/HVAC Systems Standards. This new policy is an important part of WSU’s sustainability efforts, helping to reduce utility costs and lower our carbon footprint.
Apply by Feb. 1 for the John A. See Innovation Award
Applications for the John A. See Innovation Award will be accepted until Friday, Feb. 1. The award was established in December 2013 by John A. See to support prototype development, which may include development of products in engineering and science, development of life-enhancing therapeutic products, creation of application of new knowledge and artistic ventures.

Student Conduct & Community Standards announces updated procedures
Student Conduct & Community Standards has reviewed and updated some of its procedures regarding the student conduct process for individuals and organizations charged with violations of the Student Code of Conduct.
Areas that have been updated include:
- Hearing and Appeal Board Definitions (Section II.)
- Guidelines for Determining Organizational Responsibility for Violations (Section V.E.)
- Formal Resolution Option Procedures (Section VI.D.)
- Student Conduct Board Hearing Procedures (Section VI.D.2.)
- Questioning Procedures in a Hearing (Section VI.D.3.e.)
- Appeal Request Procedures (Section X.B.)

WSU Weekly Briefing to feature a Shock the Future update from the dean of the College of Health Professions
The WSU Weekly Briefing will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in the Marcus Welcome Center.
Sandra Bibb, dean of the College of Health Professions, will talk about the potential impact of the Shock the Future referendum on her college.
Tracee Friess, director of communications for research and technology transfer, will provide an overall university update.
The briefing will be livestreamed and available later that day at WSU Weekly Briefing. There will be time for questions following the briefing.
11th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Commemoration

for the 11th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Commemoration at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow
(Thursday, Jan. 24) in the Rhatigan Student Center Shirley Beggs Ballroom.
Learn about and reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. King and collaboratively envision ways to carry forward his work, as well as participate in an impactful, inclusive and engaging celebration of his life. We will also recognize the 2019 Drum Major Award recipient.
‘Men Rising: Courageous Conversations to Restore our Community’ event coming Jan. 24
The WSU Center for Combating Human Trafficking along with One Love Unified Foundation and Real Men Real Heroes will host “Men Rising: Courageous Conversations to Restore Our Community.” The event will be held at 7 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Jan. 24) in the CAC Theater.
In conversations regarding human trafficking and sexual exploitation, men are often
only viewed as the problem. However, to effectively fight against all types of violence,
our community is in desperate need of men who will stand up for those who experience
abuse and exploitation.
This event will feature men in our community engaging in courageous conversations
to explore how men can become greater champions of change to combat these injustices,
and to uplift our community in the name of accountability, brotherhood and love, ending
with a musical performance!

LinkedIn: Craft a stellar profile and build a valuable network
For many, LinkedIn is the social media equivalent of an awkward networking event. However, 98 percent of recruiters and 85 percent of hiring managers use LinkedIn to find candidates.
Come to this workshop from 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in 266 RSC, where you'll learn how to craft a stellar profile, build a valuable network and leverage both to your best advantage.

Emergency need for blood!
Right now, there is less than a three-day supply of most blood types. More than 27,000 pints of blood and platelets have gone uncollected this month because of winter weather and illness. Do your part to help replenish the blood supply by donating next week at the WSU Blood Drive from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, and Thursday, Jan. 31, in the Heskett Center lobby. A free T-shirt will be given to presenting donors.

Japanese film and culture class to be offered this semester
JAPN 300B, a course in Japanese film and culture, will be offered this semester at WSU South. The course will cover a variety of movies, from classics such as “Godzilla and Rashomon” to modern movies like “Princess Mononoke” and “Nobody Knows.”
The class is open to anyone with an interest in Japanese film, and knowledge of the Japanese language is not a requirement. Shuttle buses will run to WSU South for students who do not have transportation.
This course will count toward the new minor in Japanese that began in the fall semester.

Student Affairs invites faculty, staff, students and friends to Shockers After Dark from 8-10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, on the first floor, RSC, and Shocker Sports Grill & Lanes.

Co-op and Internship Enrollment Day on Thursday, Jan. 24
Walk-in enrollment is available for students currently employed in a field directly related to their major, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24 in 262 RSC.
Please let students know they can enroll in academic or zero credit positions. Students must meet academic requirements in order to enroll. If they are enrolling using a position that has not yet been approved by the Career Development Center, students will need to bring a copy of their job description, which includes supervisor name, email, phone and work site address. Students working at NIAR must provide a position description.
WSU graduate wins prestigious national innovation award
Brock Milford
2018 Wichita State alumnus Brock Milford has won the prestigious FAA Centers of Excellence DOT Secretary of Transportation Student RAISE Award.
The RAISE (Recognizing Aviation and Aerospace Innovation in Science and Engineering) Award is given to only two college students and one high schooler in the country for their ability to demonstrate unique, innovative thinking in aerospace science and engineering.
‘Solving for X’ opens this week at the Ulrich Museum of Art
Introducing “Solving for X,” a series of exhibitions organized by the Ulrich Museum of Art in collaboration with university scholars across campus. The intent of the Museum is to work with WSU scholars in all disciplines who are problem solving for sustainability to create visualizations of their research.
The first “Solving for X” project opens tomorrow (Thursday, Jan. 24), with an opening party from 5-8 p.m. The Ulrich encourages students, faculty and staff to join members of the community in shared discovery, exchange and delight.

lIne C T is an art exhibition presented by student artist Austin Shaw. His work will be display now to Friday, Feb. 1, in the Cadman Art Gallery, first floor, Rhatigan Student Center.
This show is about the photos which the artist has taken in Wichita, and all of the cool lines that appear in them. The artists says that he see the world differently than most people and wants to show that through his photographs.
