Officer Rueda receives ribbon for going above and beyond
Shocker Nation is full of amazing people. One of those people is WSU Police Officer Efrain Rueda, who has received a University Police ribbon for two outstanding actions. This past spring he stayed for hours with a student during the night as she dealt with a painful situation with her roommate. And more recently, upon finding a homeless woman on campus during a thunderstorm, he paid for her to stay in a hotel for the night. Thank you for all you do, Officer Rueda!

Strategic Planning Update: A year in review . . .
The Strategic Planning Committee is hosting a town hall from 3-4:30 p.m. Thursday,
Sept. 19, in 208 Hubbard Hall.
The September town hall will provide an opportunity to share the results of the committee’s
work on input received at the May 2 town hall. All feedback was reviewed, evaluated
and incorporated into the update that will be shared on Sept. 19. The town hall meeting
is open to all members of the campus community, and the Wichita community at large.
Prior to the September Town Hall, please take a moment to review the Strategic Planning

Shocker Circle registration is open now!
Registration is now open for the Shocker Circles.
Circles are intended to be an engagement process for collaboration and understanding
as it relates to shared governance. Each participant is assigned to a table at random
and each will have a trained facilitator. The principles and practices of the circle
process provide a structure that allows and encourages idea sharing and conversation.

‘Creating Globally Engineered Aerospace Factories’
The World Trade Council of Wichita (WTCouncil), part of the Center for International Business Advancement (CIBA) at the Barton School of Business, will kick off its first dinner talk for the new academic year on Thursday, Sept. 19 with a presentation from Spirit Aerospace's senior managers on "Creating Globally Engineered Aerospace Factories."
The event will be held at the Wichita Marriott Hotel, 9100 Corporate Hills Drive. A networking reception sponsored by Spirit AeroSystems Inc., will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The presentation by David L. Nelson, senior manager global SCM, Spirit AeroSystems Inc., is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.

A Conversation with Schuyler Bailar

Since being recruited for the Harvard Men’s Swim team in 2015, Bailar has told his story to audiences across the country in over 100 appearances, including on The Ellen Show, The Olympic Channel, 60 Minutes, at the CIA, the NCAA, and scores of conferences, companies, and schools. His talk has inspired many to achieve their dreams while also finding better comfort and grounding in who they are.

WSU students can apply for free registration to NASA Conference
WSU, in cooperation with NASA, Tennessee Valley Interstellar Workshop (TVIW), and
Ad Astra Kansas Science Foundation, is hosting the 6th Interstellar Symposium and
NASA Advanced Propulsion Workshop from Nov. 10-15, in downtown Wichita. This meeting
will bring in experts in the physics, engineering, humanities, and social sciences
of interstellar travel as part of a Congressionally-mandated NASA effort to launch
the first interstellar probe by 2069.
A private gift from Dr. Robert Hampson will fund the registration costs ($125 value)
for a limited number of WSU students to attend the week-long event, including the
Sunday evening welcome reception and all conference meals. Those interested in applying
for free registration must complete the form.
The application deadline is Monday, Sept. 30.
Each entrant must provide a one paragraph statement describing their interest in attending
the Symposium and Workshop. The best applicants will be chosen by the local organizing
committee. This opportunity is open to WSU students of any major or field of study
– both undergraduate and graduate.

Mikrokosmos Literary Journal is accepting submissions from students, faculty, and staff
Wichita State's Literary Journal Mikrokosmos is now open for submissions! Each year,
we publish a print journal with the creative work of Wichita State faculty, staff,
students, and alum.
We are looking for great pieces of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Submissions are
open until Nov. 15. All pieces can be sent to mojoeditors@gmail.com with the subject line "Mikro 66 Submission." Pieces should be attached in a word doc

'Teachable Moments' exhibition at Ulrich showcases cutting-edge art by WSU faculty
From photos of shooting range debris to photorealist paintings based on printer glitches, an upcoming exhibition at the Ulrich Museum of Art will showcase some of the cutting-edge art works created by Wichita State University faculty.
A tradition in its forty-fourth year on the WSU campus, the exhibition, known as the Faculty Biennial, represents the breadth of creative work and research being undertaken by the faculty of the School of Art, Design and Creative Industries (ADCI), including drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and new media.
The exhibition will be one of three new shows the Ulrich Museum unveils this week at its Fall Exhibition Opening Party, which will be held at the Museum from 5-8 p.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 12). The opening party is free and open to the public.

This year's biennial theme, “Teachable Moments,” seeks to prompt reflections and start conversations about the role of both formal education and informal learning in creative work. It also aims to underscore the relationships between the faculty's art-making and research and the time spent mentoring WSU students in and out of the classroom.
Ulrich curator Ksenya Gurshtein said the biennial show helped fulfill part of the Museum’s mission to present some of the most interesting and important trends in contemporary art.
“The faculty biennial is a great way to see in one show what’s happening across a really broad range of media,” she said. “It’s also a great chance to see how aesthetic and social concerns that have national and even global relevance come to bear on the work of artists here in Wichita, and impact the WSU students who study with them.”
Jeff Pulaski, Director and Associate Professor of Graphic Design, is the chair of ADCI, which helped organize the exhibition. He is also an artist whose work will be on display in the exhibition. Pulaski said the show provided examples of "approachable research" being done by WSU's art faculty.
"We have a great faculty here--many of them show their work across the country and internationally," Pulaski said. "This is our opportunity to show off the talent we have at the university."
The exhibition will be accompanied by short, informal lunch-hour talks throughout the fall to be given by each of the 15 faculty artists on display. There will also be a one-hour research presentation on October 1 by Dr. Brittany Lockard, Assistant Professor of Art History at WSU, who will deliver a talk titled "The Secret Language of Food and Women's Art." The lunch-hour talks will take place on Tuesdays from 12:00-1:00 p.m. between September 17th and November 12th, with two talks happening each Tuesday.

The Distinguished Scholarship Invitational (DSI) is quickly approaching and will be
held on Saturday, Nov. 23. The $64,000 Harry Gore Memorial Scholarships are awarded
through the DSI process to three high school seniors to attend Wichita State in the
fall of 2020, and we need your help in selecting the next Gore Scholars!
Observers are WSU faculty, staff, and community members and are present in each room
to score the student participants in two activities -- an interview and a consensus-building
activity. There are two times observers can choose from -- 7:30-10:30 a.m. and 2:30-5:30
p.m. Of course, you can always volunteer for both.
