Sign up to help with the Distinguished Scholarship Invitational
The Distinguished Scholarship Invitational (DSI) is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 23. This year's competition is shaping up to be a record-breaking year with 735 prospective students registered to attend! Through the DSI competition, three students will be awarded the $64,000 Harry Gore Memorial Scholarships to attend Wichita State next fall.
Last year's Gore Scholars - Anna Tri, Sarah Buie, and Gehad Qaki - hosted a FB Live chat on the Wichita State Admissions Facebook page to discuss what students can expect during the competition. You can view the replay of the live chat by clicking above. In less than 24 hours, there have been 954 views with prospective students and parents asking questions related to DSI and about Wichita State University in general.
The Admissions team is still in search of DSI observers from 7:30-10 a.m., 2:30-5:30 p.m., or both sessions on Nov. 23.
If you are able to help at DSI as an observer, email Mandy Harmon, associate director, at mandy.harmon@wichita.edu to sign up.
Wichita State University Regional Institute on Aging calls for interdisciplinary proposals
WSU Regional Institute on Aging (RIA) calls for interdisciplinary proposals with a focus on facilitating accessibility, diversity and inclusion of older adults to improve physical, cognitive, and social well-being.
WSU RIA is pleased to announce a new funding opportunity for interdisciplinary faculty research that addresses issues related to well-being in older adults. This funding opportunity is supported by a gift from the estate of Evelyn Cassat. Funding will be provided for three interdisciplinary research projects at WSU that contribute to knowledge and practice related to well-being in older adults. The maximum funding amount for each of the three proposals is $25,000 for a 12-month period.
Proposals may be either for foundational research or applied research. Foundational and applied research projects that actively involve faculty members at WSU from at least two distinct disciplines and more than one college will be given priority; however, sole researcher projects will also be considered. Applied research projects that provide evidence of real or potential impact for improving or sustaining older adults’ access to and inclusion in services or activities that foster physical, cognitive, and social well-being will be given preference.
All projects must include an impact statement describing specifically how the project will benefit the quality of life for older adults in the community, and provide practical guidelines for possible implementation. Projects must also include a plan for obtaining future funding from external sources to continue the research.
Application due date Friday, Jan. 17, 2020

The Career Development Center is hosting another workshop for students in our Career Readiness Series: Tech Savvy and Oral / Written Communication from 3-4 p.m. today (Wednesday, Nov. 13) in Brennan Hall III.
Employers are looking for Wichita State graduates to be career ready – meaning graduates know how to use their talents, strengths and interests. Being career ready means recognizing and demonstrating the competencies identified by employers that are crucial to a successful transition into the workplace.
Our workshops are designed to help students understand the meaning of these competencies, learn how to identify and exhibit these skills and how to further develop them right now.
Include descriptions of all information-bearing images in your documents and course materials
If you use content-bearing images in your PowerPoints, documents, or other course content, ensure the content is also communicated in written text.
- Adding image descriptions is as easy, but the method varies by the type of system you have. Check out these resources for specific training. If your software version still offers you both a “Title” and a “Description” field, use “Description.”
- Images can also be described in a caption or in the surrounding text if appropriate.
- Label decorative images as “decorative” rather than leaving the description field blank. That way, screen reader users know the image has been evaluated.
Writing meaningful Alt Text takes practice. Focus on being brief, descriptive and on communicating the information that is important for your purposes.

HVAC Systems Standards and personal space heaters information
Facilities Services staff continue their work to ensure our campus is in compliance with Policy 11.27/HVAC Systems Standards, which went into effect on Dec. 10, 2018. Please review this policy carefully here.
An important component of the HVAC Systems Standards policy states that space heaters are not allowed on campus due to their excessive energy consumption, the safety hazards they can create, and their negative impact on the efficiency of HVAC systems. We ask that faculty and staff remove personal space heaters from our campus.
If you believe a learning or working space on our campus is too hot or cold, please submit a work order request via this link. Upon receipt of the work order request, Facilities Services staff will respond in a timely manner.
Please work with Facilities Services staff to ensure campuswide compliance with Policy 11.27/HVAC Systems Standards. This new policy is an important part of WSU’s sustainability efforts and will help reduce our energy consumption, lower our utility costs, and reduce our carbon footprint.
