Unauthorized attempts to access university server detected
Statement about unauthorized attempts to access university server, from Toney Flack, Chief Information Officer, which was announced via broadcast email on Friday, Dec. 6.
Thursday (Dec. 5), two incidents of attempted unauthorized access to a university server were detected. University server and security teams investigated the server and continue to monitor the situation.
This server stores student and employee data, including WSU IDs, encrypted passwords, and security questions and answers. This server DOES NOT contain health or financial information (e.g., social security numbers, bank account information, or credit card numbers).
Although we have no evidence at this time that an unauthorized individual has retrieved and is using your personal data, we are bringing this incident to your attention so that you can be alert to signs of any possible misuse of your personal identity.
Out of an abundance of caution, Information Technology Services recommends that you do the following if you are a myWSU user:
- Change your myWSU password
- Change your myWSU security questions and answers
- Change your myWSU OneStop question and answer (if you have one)
To make these changes, log in to myWSU, go to the Home tab, and click on Manage Your Password.
WSU is continuing to investigate these incidents. We will update you with additional information as it becomes known.
Registration for Goal-Setting Workshop is now available
WSU faculty and staff looking for tips about how to set and keep both personal and professional goals should sign up for this free workshop facilitated by ComPsych / Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Qualified employees will receive a HealthQuest point for completing the session! This workshop will be held January – March, and will take place in the RSC. Seating is limited. WSU Police Department invites campus to participate in Sergeant’s assessment
The WSU Police Department invites faculty, staff and students to participate in a Sergeant’s assessment today (Tuesday, Dec. 10), with community presentations at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. in 319 RSC.
The officers taking the assessment are required to give a 10-minute presentation on community policing and what it looks like on the WSU campus. This presentation includes a Q&A session, and we are asking all who participate to do an evaluation form provided.
Retirement receptions planned for Betty Elder and Connie Wells tomorrow (Wednesday,

The School of Nursing is celebrating the retirements of longtime faculty member Betty Elder and longtime staff member Connie Wells. Betty has worked at WSU in the School of Nursing for 16 years, and Connie has worked at WSU in the School of Nursing for 19 years.
Betty Elder’s retirement reception will be from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, in 302 Ahlberg Hall.
Connie Wells’s retirement reception will be from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, in 300 Ahlberg Hall.

Call for Fiscal Year 2021 Educational Opportunity and Student Fee Funding Requests
It’s again time to begin the process for submission of funding requests through Student Government for the Educational Opportunity Fund and Student Services Fee for FY ‘21. Student Fees provide funding for programs / activities delivered directly to students, and the Educational Opportunity Fund provides funding for financial assistance to students.
If you’ve submitted requests in the past, the Budget / Review Officer should have received an email from the Budget Office to kick-off the submission process. If you have not submitted requests in the past, but are considering submitting a new request, please contact Lauren Smith, Jason Post, or David Miller in the Budget Office at 978-3030 for additional information.
Requests are due no later than Friday, Jan, 24.

The Kansas Accessibility Resources Network has several online, on-demand classes that might be of interest to you. The Impairment Awareness class is especially useful to faculty and student-facing staff, and can also be used with students in classes.
Fine forgiveness and reduced fine prices coming to University Libraries
Beginning Jan. 1, 2020, the University Libraries will no longer charge overdue fees on books* and is reducing overdue charges on many other items, including movies, periodicals, and equipment. Replacement fees will remain in place for lost items.
These changes are a reflection of the University Libraries’ efforts to remove barriers to access and reduce student debt.
Leading up to this policy change, we will offer a one-time only Amnesty Day today (Tuesday, Dec. 10). All overdue items returned in good condition to the staff at the Circulation Desk of Ablah Library on this day will have fines forgiven.

Five student teams move on to final round of innovation competition
Five teams of Wichita State University students emerged as finalists in the Koch Innovation Challenge on Friday, Dec. 6.
The business pitch competition, sponsored by Koch Industries, is an annual competition supporting the WSU College of Engineering in fostering a culture of creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship and teamwork among students.
Cross-disciplinary teams of new freshmen and transfer students studying engineering, art and design, business and other disciplines compete for funding and scholarships to invent products and technologies via a freshman introductory course.

WSU students create app to increase campus involvement

Audiology doctoral students need participants for their research projects
WSU graduate students in the Doctor of Audiology program need participants for their research projects. They are studying clinical techniques in audiology for evaluating function of the ear.
Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 35, have normal hearing, have not had an ear infection in the past three months, nor had symptoms of cold, flu, or nasal allergy in the past two weeks.
Participants will receive a free comprehensive hearing evaluation and ear examination prior to testing. The testing will take about one hour. Volunteers needed for SHOCKERTHON, an applied learning opportunity
SHOCKERTHON is looking for two more student leaders to join the executive team. SHOCKERTHON is a WSU RSO committed to create a community that is aware and supportive of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals to better the lives of children and families in need.
In the first four years alone, we’ve raised over $179,000. This money helps to pay expenses not covered by insurance – such as medicines, therapy, hearing aids and more. The money raised also allows hospitals and other health care facilities purchase necessary equipment to help care for the children in need.
