WSU-based company reaches $2.1 million in seed funding
Creating eco-friendly refrigeration and cooling technology is one of the top concerns when it comes to fighting climate change. Thanks to resources and knowledge at Wichita State University, a Wichita company is one step closer to finding a solution to that problem.
HyperBorean announced today that it closed its pre-seed angel round of financing totaling $2.1 million. HyperBorean is a cleantech company based at Wichita State and founded in 2013 by Winfield-native Todd Gentry.
“WSU and GoCreate have been an absolute game changer in our ability to get to this stage,” says Gentry. “Without these resources, the cost of prototyping and testing would have been 10-20 times more than what we’ve invested. It’s just been incredible to have these resources available.”

WSU engineering students develop assistive technologies to aid nonverbal individual
Katlyn, a student at USD 259’s Levy Special Education Center, has cerebral palsy and is nonverbal. It’s ordinarily very difficult for her to communicate.
But three Wichita State engineering students – aerospace engineering seniors Meghana “Meg” Ravi and Brendan Lajza, and electrical engineering senior Jacob Lewis – have made communication a lot easier for her as a project for ENGR 202 “Service Learning in Engineering” this semester.
Katlyn uses an iPad equipped with an app called Proloquo2Go. The app is meant to aid people with limited speech and motion to communicate through an array of buttons connected to programmed sentences.

Website Usability Study - Participants needed
Participants age 18 and older who have experience using websites for renting apartments are needed to help evaluate the usability of a website. If you are interested, please take a few minutes to take the screening survey here.
If you qualify, you will be contacted to schedule a time to participate. This study takes place at the WSU main campus and lasts about 60-90 minutes. Participants in the study will earn $25 for their time.

Noell Birondo receives honor from American Philosophical Association
The American Philosophical Association (APA) announced the winners for the second half of 2019. APA prizes recognize the many areas of philosophy research by philosophers at various career stages, as well as the teaching of philosophy and public philosophy.
Wichita State’s Noell Birondo received the Essay Prize in Latin American Thought for “The Virtues of Mestizaje: Lessons from Las Casas on Aztec Human Sacrifice.”
Fire Safety to test fire alarm horns and lights
In order to complete the annual fire alarm testing for all campus buildings, Fire Safety along with Sandifer Engineering will be sounding the fire alarms throughout the day both Thursday, Jan. 2 and Friday, Jan. 3.
The alarms will sound for a significant period of time in order for inspectors to be able to walk the entire building to verify the audio and visual devices are working.

Applications for the 2020 John A. See Innovation Award will be accepted now to Friday, Jan. 31. The award was established in December 2013 by John A. See to support prototype development, which may include development of products in engineering and science, development of life-enhancing therapeutic products, creation of application of new knowledge and artistic ventures.

Now is the time to submit your request if your department needs a holiday greeting activated on your calling-tree or call distribution number. Tilford Symposium will be held on campus Feb. 27 and 28
The Tilford Symposium engages the WSU campus, private industry and nonprofit organizations to promote the legacy of equity, diversity and inclusion in our community.
The theme will be Education and Learning in a World of Differences.
Learner differences cross dimensions that are material (social class, geographical locale, and family), corporeal (age, race, sex and sexuality, physical and mental capacities) and symbolic (culture or ethnicity, language, gender, affinity, and persona). In this thematic area, we explore strategies for negotiating these differences, from the microdynamics of pedagogy to the agendas of curriculum, the nuances of assessment, the organizational structures of the educational institution and its relations with the communities it services.
We invite all faculty, staff, students, industry partners, and community members to be a part of these crucial conversations!

As our campus continues to work on improved accessibility in many areas, faculty are redesigning coursework and modifying documents to be fully accessible. This valuable work can be time consuming and often requires some creative pedagogical modifications.
Faculty are encouraged to include details of this work in their Faculty Activity Record (FAR) in section I on Teaching / Librarianship. The Instructional Design and Accessibility office (IDA) is happy to do a review of revised courses and provide a letter of support to document this work, if desired.
Classroom Technology Training Schedule for spring 2020
Classrooms across campus are equipped with uniform technology and media equipment. Access is available to faculty and staff with consistent keys for most classrooms that are issued during a short training session. We encourage you to bring your personal laptop to test in the room during training. If there are additional needs or questions, please call 978-3588.
Faculty are encouraged to verify that their assigned rooms have the technology they need prior to the start of the semester.
