The Office of Research invites Notices of Intent to apply for NSF’s Major Research Implementation program
The WSU Office of Research invites you to consider applying for the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Major Research Implementation Program (MRI).
Because WSU is limited to submitting two Track 1 proposals and one Track 2 proposal, interested researchers must notify the Office of Research of their intent to apply by noon July 14, via proposals@wichita.edu. Internal Pre-proposals may be required to determine which proposals will proceed, and if required will be due by noon July 21. Full applications will be due to NSF on Jan. 19, 2021. Track 1 proposals are for amounts between $100,000, and up to $1,000,000. Track 2 proposals are for amounts between $1 million and $4 million. Proposals will also require a cost match.
The NSF MRI program "serves to increase access to multi-user scientific and engineering instrumentation for research and research training in our nation's institutions of higher education and not-for-profit scientific / engineering research organizations.
An MRI award supports the acquisition or development of a multi-user research instrument that is, in general, too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other NSF programs. MRI provides support to acquire critical research instrumentation without which advances in fundamental science and engineering research may not otherwise occur. MRI also provides support to develop next-generation research instruments that open new opportunities to advance the frontiers in science and engineering research. Additionally, an MRI award is expected to enhance research training of students who will become the next generation of instrument users, designers and builders.

Wichita State professor, health care professional reflects on COVID-19 changes
As businesses begin to reopen and more people venture outside their homes, health care workers continue to stay vigilant against the threat of COVID-19.
Ashley Purdum, an associate clinical professor at Wichita State University, works as an acute care speech-language pathologist (SLP) at Wesley Medical Center. As a SLP, Ashley evaluates and treats patients of all ages in the areas of speech, swallowing, language and cognitive deficits and voice disorders. She typically sees patients dealing with a stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, neurogenic disease or general debilitation.
Right now, Wesley has one SLP dedicated to helping patients with COVID-19 and those suspected to have the virus. This helps to reduce patient exposure and excessive use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Even though Ashley does not directly interact with the COVID-19 patients, she still takes the use of her PPE seriously to protect herself and her patients.
College of Health Professions welcomes new department chairs
The College of Health Professions has two Department Chair changes, effective June 14. Julie Scherz (Communication Sciences and Disorders) is retiring after 22 years of service at WSU. Kim Darden (Physician Assistant) has accepted the position of Director of Clinical Development Operations in the PA department at WSU. Thank you Julie and Kim for your years of dedicated service and leadership!
The college is proud to welcome Doug Parham as the new Chair for Communication Sciences and Disorders and LaDonna Hale as the new Chair for the Physician Assistant Program.

Join our panel of experts at top US research university high performance computing (HPC) centers to learn how the interdependence and impact of HPC and academic research continues to grow.
University research programs are fundamental in the advancement of human knowledge in fields of inquiry from the natural sciences and engineering to the humanities and liberal arts. The use of powerful computing and digital technologies is an increasingly important tool for academic research across disciplines, including HPC systems. HPC enables researchers to ask questions and attack complex problems through techniques such as simulation and data analytics in order to understand, discover, and predict.
With the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for rapid understanding and development of solutions, the role of HPC is becoming prominent as researchers around the world depend on HPC systems to model the pandemic, understand the nature of the virus, and develop treatments and vaccines. HPC is crucial in advancing human understanding and addressing societal problems in many other areas as well, with academic researchers often leading the way.

10 x 10: Ten Women / Ten Prints Online Exhibition
This online exhibition presents the portfolio 10 x 10: Ten Women / Ten Prints, which was published by the Berkeley Art Center in 1995 to commemorate that year’s
International Women’s Day (March 8) and the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the
19th Amendment, which gave women in the US the right to vote.
Each of the portfolio’s 10 prints was created by a different artist. All are women,
and as a group, they represent the racial and ethnic diversity of the United States.
A number of the artists are also social justice activists. Their prints tackle both
the public and private struggles that women from different backgrounds and walks of
life still strive to overcome in our culture. The portfolio was printed by Jos Sances,
founder of Alliance Graphics, which has long supported social justice organizations
in the Bay Area.
Alice Aycock in the Studio - By Appointment Only
In August, the Ulrich Museum of Art will install Alice Aycock’s commissioned sculpture Twister Grande as part of the Martin H. Bush Outdoor Sculpture Collection and the Museum’s first
contribution to Wichita State’s evolving East Innovation Campus. In advance of the
sculpture’s unveiling, Alice Aycock in the Studio will look at the sources of inspiration, creative experiments, research, and technical
ingenuity that have gone into the making of this piece and other recent works in the
same series that are now found around the globe.

2020 Dreamer Scholarship
Neiman Thompson, president of Sigma Lambda Beta, and a diversity intern for the admissions team last year asked us to spread the word about this unique scholarship opportunity for incoming students, and we’re honored to do so.
The Dreamer Scholarship is provided through the Student Government Association and the Rho Beta Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta for DACA-affiliated or undocumented students planning to continue their education at WSU. Priority for this scholarship will be given to DACA or undocumented students.
Awards are based on academic excellence, leadership in on-campus activities / organizations and financial need. The committee will award students scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500. After applications are reviewed, finalists will be contacted for an in-person interview and awarded accordingly. Please direct any questions to rhoberta.slb@wichita.edu.
