Grant fuels digital transformation, applied learning opportunities

  • Victoria Sherif

    Dr. Victoria Sherif

Wichita State University was awarded a $250,000 grant from the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, to build a workforce development database.
  • The database will include educational opportunities and resources to provide necessary skills for today's robotics careers.
  • The project will help bring an understanding of emerging technologies and diversify the Kansas economy.
  • Several students gained applied learning and interdisciplinary collaboration experience while building the database.

Rarely does the word database evoke excitement beyond number-crunching circles, but a new project is stirring some excitement across Wichita State University.

The Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) Institute, which receives funding from the U.S. Department of Defense, recently awarded Wichita State $250,000 to assist in creating a workforce development database focused on compiling a map of educational programs and resources that provide skills required for today’s advanced robotics and manufacturing careers.

But it’s so much more than a database. For students and faculty in social and education science, it’s an interdisciplinary applied learning jackpot.

StoryCorps

Wichita has been selected to partner with StoryCorps to foster conversations across ideological divides

In 2020 when Americans face challenges unlike any other time in our history, KMUW  and StoryCorps are teaming up to invite people to take part in meaningful conversations that are recorded for history.

Wichita is one of six locations across the country selected to take part in StoryCorps’ nationwide One Small Step initiative to facilitate and broadcast conversations with Americans of opposing viewpoints. Rather than spark additional political debates, One Small Step encourages answers to questions like, “Was there a moment, event, or person in your life that shaped your political views?” and “What scares you most when you think about the future?”

KMUW will use StoryCorps’ remote recording platform, which pairs two people for a conversation over video and hosted by a trained facilitator. With participant permission, these conversations are preserved for future generations at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, and select conversations will be produced for broadcast. To participate, go to kmuw.org/oss.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Bike count

Wanted: Volunteers to help with 2020 bicycle and pedestrian count event

Volunteers are needed to help manually count bicycle and pedestrian activity across 35 sites in the Wichita Metro area.

The annual event, sponsored by the Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization will be held Sept. 24 and 26.

This important event relies heavily on the commitment of community volunteers to gather data about how our network of paths and lanes are being used.

According to Tricia Thomas, WAMPO Communication’s Manager:

“One of the greatest challenges facing the bicycle and pedestrian field is the lack of documentation on usage and demand. Without accurate and consistent demand and usage figures, it is difficult to measure the positive benefits of bicycle and pedestrian investments, especially when compared to the other transportation modes such as the private automobile.”

As such, this event is the only source for regional-scale bicycle and pedestrian data. The results of this data are then used to guide investments throughout the regional transportation system.

So please consider volunteering! This annual event is a real opportunity for local residents to become involved in a piece of the regional transportation planning process. As we know, bicycle and pedestrian investments stimulate the economy, public health, and the overall quality of life in a variety of ways. Communities that invest in these facilities inherently attract people and businesses so it’s good for everyone!  Register to volunteer here!
