To support instructors who are prepping their classes for fall, the Faculty Curricular Design Working Group has created 10 sets of featured questions related to our new teaching environment. Each day we will post one set of frequently asked questions to respond to issues that faculty have raised about how to be prepared.

- What is “hybrid” course design?
A hybrid course gives instructors opportunity for flexibility and creativity. Content may be delivered in-person and online; it can be synchronous or asynchronous depending on instructor preference. See some examples here.
- What is the easiest option for moving my course to hybrid delivery?
There is no easy option for class development -- it is skilled work that takes an upfront investment of time. But there is help available, and the easiest way to move to hybrid formats is to take advantage of the resources available through Wichita State University (WSU) Instructional Design and Access (IDA). See some additional ways that IDA can help you build your Bb shell or provide additional professional development.

Annual Appointment Notices are available online!
2021 Fiscal and Academic Year annual Appointment Notices are available online and will not be printed and distributed to departments.
Please note that University Support Staff (USS) and Non-Benefit Eligible employees (Students, Lecturers and Temporary employees) are not subject to the annual Appointment Notice process. Athletics employees will receive Appointment Notices through a separate process later in July.
Therefore, Unclassified Professionals (UP) and Faculty can view, electronically acknowledge, and print their 2021 Appointment Notice through myWSU:

Letters of Intent will be due Sept. 21, 2020 with Full Applications (if invited) to be due Jan. 11, 2021.
Purpose: “The Greenwall Faculty Scholars Program in Bioethics is a career development award to enable junior faculty members to carry out innovative bioethics research. It supports research that goes beyond current work in bioethics to help resolve pressing ethical issues in clinical, biomedical, and public health decision-making, policy, and practice, and creates a community that enhances future bioethics research by Scholars and Alumni/ae.”
Amount: “The award supports 50% of a Scholar’s salary plus benefits for three years, up to the NIH salary cap, with 10% institutional costs for the salary and benefits. This funding is intended to ensure that at least 50 percent of the scholar’s time is devoted to bioethics research. In addition, the foundation provides $5,000 each year for limited project support and travel (no indirect costs are provided for these items).”

Ulrich Museum set to install Twister Grande (tall) sculpture Tuesday on WSU Innovation Campus
Beginning at 8 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, Aug. 4), a crew will install the Alice Aycock sculpture Twister Grande (tall) on WSU’s Innovation Campus. Once installed, it will be the 81st piece in the Museum’s world-class Martin H. Bush Outdoor Sculpture Collection, and the first placement on the Innovation Campus.
The public is invited to attend the installation, where safe social-distancing practices will be observed (wearing face masks and standing at least six feet apart).
Ulrich Director Leslie Brothers, who acquired the piece, said the work was selected for the site because it captures the spirit of the dramatic changes that have taken place at the university in the last decade. It will, moreover, be a fitting and lasting tribute to the contributions of President John Bardo, who initiated and oversaw those changes prior to his passing in 2019.
“This sculpture is a perfect fit for us on so many levels,” Brothers said. “It evokes the spirits of invention, innovation, and change that we are accustomed to here in Wichita and at WSU, and it comes from a world-renowned sculptor. It is definitely a major addition not just to our collection or the WSU campus, but for the greater city of Wichita as well.”
Indeed, Aycock is a force of nature in her own right, heralded as one of the most important artists in contemporary sculpture; in 2018, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award in Contemporary Sculpture from The International Sculpture Center. She has blazed a unique path working within the art world at the intersection of sculpture, architecture, technology, and science. Her addition to the Ulrich’s outdoor sculpture collection will help boost its representation of key female artists. The collection currently contains a handful of key works by major women sculptors, including Louise Nevelson, Barbara Hepworth, Ursula Von Rydingsvard, and, most recently, Elyn Zimmerman, but, overall, women are still underrepresented in the collection. Adding Aycock’s piece will help remedy that.
In conjunction with installing Twister Grande (tall), the Ulrich is also currently featuring the exhibition Alice Aycock in the Studio, which is an installation of drawings and ephemera that seeks to illuminate the artist's creative process and contextualize her sculpture as part of the larger artistic practice that has unfolded over the course of 50 years. Upcoming road closure on Aug. 4
The south part of Innovation Boulevard will be closed temporarily from 7 a.m. to noon tomorrow (Tuesday, Aug. 4), for the installation of the Alice Aycock sculpture “Twister Grande” at the roundabout. All access to the roundabout will be blocked during this time, including the entrance off of 17th Street. The parking lots east of Airbus and the John Bardo Center will still be accessible through the northeast entrance of lot 37.
WSU dining, services adjust to safety guidelines for fall semester
With health and safety as our top priority, Wichita State University’s food, retail and common spaces will adjust hours, layout and cleaning schedules as students return for the fall semester.
Safety measures such as face coverings, social distancing and hand-washing will be emphasized with signage, email reminders and social media.

Loni LeForce, Ph.D., earned a bachelor’s degree in Social Science Education and a Master of Art of Teaching at Friends University. Loni completed a second master’s in Special Education from the University of Oklahoma and her Ph.D. in 2020.
Currently, Dr. LeForce is the Pre-Employment Transition Specialist at the University of Missouri, in August she will transition to Process Coordinator and Transition Coach for the Springfield, Missouri Public schools.
Dr. LeForce’s professional experiences include teaching at the secondary level for 13 years in Kansas and Oklahoma. Loni has taught classes as a graduate assistant and adjunct professor at the University of Oklahoma. She has also presented transition education at conferences in Iowa, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, and Wisconsin.

Required fire drills to be held on campus this week
State fire regulations require that fire drills be held annually for all campus buildings. The 2020 fire drills will be conducted Aug. 3-7.
Fire Safety personnel will conduct the drill some time during each scheduled day. When the alarm sounds in your building, evacuate the building in an orderly fashion to your designated assembly point(s), at least 50 feet from the building. Emergency Building Coordinators will assist with the evacuation. Environmental, Health and Safety staff will evaluate each drill.
