A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. today (Thursday, Oct. 22) for Wayne and Kay Woolsey Hall, the new home of the W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State University.

Co-op, internships and the Shocker Career Accelerator
The Shocker Career Accelerator wanted to reach out and let you know that we have restructured our office to help provide more support for Wichita State students. In doing so, we want to reintroduce some key staff.
Mark Bengtson and Kyle Wallace are the primary contacts for students seeking employment in co-op, internship, and applied learning opportunities. They also oversee enrollment in co-ops and internships, and can field questions regarding student learning objectives and final projects for enrolled co-op and internship students.
Foundation Requisition Training sign-up
Training is available for all university staff employees on how to process Foundation Requisition requests. This training will cover foundation requisition fundamentals and new changes in the requisition process. This year, training will be held via Zoom.

Town Hall features Convergence Sciences Initiative awardees
Teams from the awarded Convergence Sciences Initiative proposals will give 10-minute presentations featuring their projects at 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 23.
The presentations, which will be held via Zoom, will allow each team to further explain the intended outcomes of the projects, including plans for external funding.
“All four projects have the potential to be gamechangers in the direction and intensity of research at Wichita State, and in social and economic impact in the region,” said Dr. Andrew Hippisley, dean of Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. “The projects showcase the power of partnerships, the value of combining expertise, and the courage to take risks in pursuing ambitious problems that can only be solved by converging disciplines.”

Rise of the Rest 2020 Virtual Tour
The Rise of the Rest 2020 Virtual Tour: Equity Edition program is scheduled for early December and will feature a pitch competition for companies led by Black founders who are headquartered in any city outside of San Francisco, New York City, or Boston.

Shocker Secrets to Success series available to help students navigate the hidden curriculum
A new collection of videos is available on the Student Success website dedicated to the hidden curriculum of Shocker life. Designed for first-generation students, but applicable to many, this partnership between Student Success and Student Affairs attempts to provide information we assume students already know, but often don't. Included is a playlist of videos to help students understand Blackboard better, as well as a new video series that helps students navigate academic resources, time management, technology, classroom involvement and more. New videos will be added throughout the semester.

The Ulrich Museum of Art is proud to host Indigenous artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith for what promises to be an exciting virtual program this week. It kicks off at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, and is free and open to all, but you have to register first to get the Zoom link (link provided).
Quick-to-See Smith, a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation in Montana, conveys both humorous and poignant socio-political commentary through her complex paintings and prints. The Ulrich + Artists + You Billboard featuring her work is currently on view at 703 N. West Street in Wichita.

Panelists Courtney Allen, Amber Droegemeier, and Clovis Ribas will discuss their background and careers and answer any questions the audience may have in this panel session. Industry Professional Panelist Bios:
Courtney Allen is an Industrial Engineer at Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita, Kansas. She received both her bachelors and master’s degrees in Industrial Engineering from Wichita State University and will attend Georgia Tech in 2021 for an additional master’s degree in Computational Analytics.
Courtney has worked in various roles at Spirit including lean manufacturing and core industrial engineering, spanning many integrated product teams and production lines. Her projects have touched several aspects of industrial engineering including data analytics, simulation, system design, database development, statistical process control, work measurement, root cause corrective action, and lean manufacturing. Outside of the industry, she is passionate about women in STEM and continuous education.
Amber Droegemeier received her Bachelor of Arts in Exercise Science from Wichita State University in 2007 and her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Wichita State University in 2010. After graduation, she served as an acute care physical therapy for five and a half years at Ascension Via Christi Hospitals in Wichita. In 2016 Amber transitioned to serve as a Quality and Regulatory Readiness Coordinator and successfully led Joint Commission Accreditation across Ascension Kansas.
In October 2018 Droegemeier received her Certification in Healthcare Quality. She has served as the Manager of Quality and was promoted to Regional Director of Quality in November 2019. Using her skills as a clinician, she oversees data measurement, reporting and process improvement activities related to quality and patient safety initiatives.
Mr. Clovis S. Ribas is the president and general manager of Shuttle Aerospace Inc., a Wichita-based company specialized in design consulting and manufacturing solutions for the aircraft industry, more specifically Landing Gear and related systems and components.
Ribas has many years of experience in management, design, manufacturing and integration of aircraft systems and components in multiple commercial and military platforms. He has a BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil, a MSc degree in Aerospace Engineering from Cranfield Institute of Technology in England and an MBA degree from WSU. He is also a graduate student in Industrial, Systems and Manufacturing Engineering at WSU. His interests include applied statistics, especially SPC methods for short run production environment and additive manufacturing (LinkedIn profile).

According to the article, “When it comes to disinformation on Instagram, it seems like the target increasingly is women, according to Alexandra Middlewood, an assistant professor at Wichita State University.”

Tuition Assistance applications for spring 2021 are now being accepted through the online application form. The online application will be available through Dec. 1, 2020, and will close at the end of this application period.
The fillable PDF form will no longer be accepted. Due to the volume of applications received each semester, requests to submit late applications will be automatically denied. There will be no exceptions.

Veteran and Military Art Expo hosted by Veterans Upward Bound is seeking art entries now to Oct. 30
Veterans Upward Bound, part of TRIO, is seeking art submissions for our first Virtual Art Expo.
We are seeking all types of art from veterans, military (Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard), veteran spouses, military spouses, veteran children, military children and community service providers whose work touches the military and/or veteran community.
With your art, please include a short narrative or recording about what it means to you and how you were inspired to create it.
WSU students and staff who meet the entry criteria are strongly encouraged to submit an entry!
This is a non-competitive show, just an expo for you to display your creative side! The expo will be held on VUB’s YouTube channel from Nov. 2-20.

Track and Field holding its annual Shocker Holiday Sweatshirt Fundraiser
The Wichita State track and field program announced its third annual Shocker Holiday Sweatshirt Fundraiser.
Shocker fans can click here to order Shocker holiday sweatshirts. This year's options include both black and yellow crewneck sweatshirts and are available in adult and youth sizes. Orders will be taken until Monday, Nov. 2 and will be available for in-person pickup only.
Pickup will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 16-20 at the Student-Athlete Success Center in the track and field offices, located directly southeast of Charles Koch Arena.
All proceeds go to the Wichita State track and field and cross-country programs.

All call for The Wheat Shock Leadership Society judges
The Wheat Shock Leadership Society is formerly known as WSU Student of the Year. Student Involvement has rebranded this scholarship competition to become a society in order to increase the prestige and will continue to be a competitive and prestigious opportunity for students who have proven exemplary leadership, involvement, and service both to the WSU and Wichita communities.
Applications and nominations for both graduate and undergraduate students are open for students who wish to participate. We are calling for judges to serve throughout the selection process. The dates and details for each round are below. We are looking for three different sets of judges, so upon indicating interest, please include which round you would be most interested in serving, as well as your second choice.
Round 1: Application Review – Completed by Jan. 11, 2021
- This process would be going through the qualified applicants and meeting to decide on which students move to the next round. We have seen an increase, so we could be sifting through 80-90 applications depending on how many students apply.
Round 2: Interviews – Feb. 4-5, 2021
- Our judges' panel will sit through a series of interviews of those selected to move on through the application round. Deliberation and decision on the final court of 10 undergraduate students and five graduate students and will follow the interviews.
Round 3: Presentations – Feb. 18-19, 2021
- This panel will serve as an audience to our 15 finalists as they present and showcase why they should be a part of The Wheat Shock Leadership Society and receive a scholarship, in addition to induction into the Society. There will be two overall winners this year, one in graduate and one at the undergraduate level.
