Mandatory training for disability awareness and classroom accessibility
Friday, April 7, 2017
Attention faculty,
Wichita State University is proud to announce new disability awareness and accessibility training for classroom instructors.
WSU is fully committed to making our campus and course offerings accessible to those with disabilities. Besides being the right thing to do, accessibility is a vital component to our core value of "success for all stakeholders."
To ensure that all WSU courses comply with federal law regarding accessibility regulations, all WSU faculty, staff and administrators who have teaching duties will be required to complete two accessibility trainings during the 2017 calendar year. These trainings are designed to give you the tools and resources necessary to interact with individuals with disabilities, to create accessible course materials and to provide accommodation for disabled students when appropriate.
The two trainings are:
- Ability Ally Training (2-hour training)
This awareness training, available twice monthly beginning April 11, will shape your perspective on ability versus disability and provide an open forum for questions and concerns for interacting with individuals with disabilities.
- Classroom Instructor Accessibility Training (online training)
This focused online training, available in August, will provide an overview of best practices for teaching students with disabilities and will connect you to a wealth of resources and tools to help you create and deliver accessible course materials.
In coming days, you'll receive information about training times and signup instructions. While the trainings are mandatory, we hope you'll embrace this important opportunity to learn and grow as we all strive to create a more inclusive, accommodating environment for our students.
Thank you for your support.
