Q: When can I begin the program?
A: Eligibility for entry into the program can be determined at any time throughout
the year. Coursework begins in summer and para-educator employment begins in fall.
Q: How do I obtain a para-educator position?
A: Para-educator jobs are acquired through Wichita State University's Cooperative
Education program and must be obtained in the content area in which licensure is sought.
A position must be secured by the fall semester in order to continue coursework. Contact
Wichita State University Cooperative Education at 316-978-3688 for information regarding
work study placement.
Q: Do I have to complete a semester of student teaching in the program?
A: Yes, the spring semester of the second year will include 12 weeks of student teaching.
Q: How many hours of residency will I complete in this program?
A: Including student teaching, each participant will complete approximately 1,150
hours in the classroom, working with teachers and students in an educational setting.
Q: Do I have to write a thesis to graduate with a MAT?
A: The program requires a research project within the coursework; there is a thesis
option, for those who wish to complete a thesis.
Q: What type of license will I have once I complete the program?
A: After completing the program and passing the PLT, you will be eligible for an
Initial Kansas Teaching License in your content field.
Q: When do I take the Praxis II and PPST exams?
A: After submitting an application and meeting with the program director, you should
begin with testing preparations. The Praxis II and PPST are required exams for entry
in the Middle Level Secondary Residency program and must be completed by June 1.
