Procedures for Appeals in Cases Related to Student Academic Dishonesty
In cases where an instructor accuses a student of academic misconduct, and the student
wishes to appeal either the existence of academic misconduct or the penalties imposed
by the instructor, the appeal shall follow the steps below.
The student shall write a brief summary of their appeal, and deliver the summary
to the Barton School Dean's Office, room 100 Clinton Hall.
The Dean shall forward the summary to the chairperson of the instructor involved.
The chairperson shall investigate the matter, and provide a report to the Dean within
fifteen class days; if a chairperson is the instructor involved, the Dean shall appoint
an alternative investigator. The report shall include recommendations to the Dean
regarding the instructor's determination of academic misconduct and the penalties
imposed by the instructor.
The Dean shall determine within ten class days whether to support or modify the instructor's
determination of academic misconduct and the penalties imposed by the instructor.
The Dean shall notify the student, the instructor, and the chairperson of the Dean's
decision. The Dean shall also notify the Vice President for Campus Life and University
Relations, the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research, and the
Dean of the student's college (if different).
If the Dean and/or the Vice President for Campus Life and University Relations determines
that additional penalties beyond those imposed by the instructor are appropriate,
the Vice President for Campus Life and University Relations shall implement disciplinary
procedures as set forth in the Student Code of Conduct.
