Field School 2023 Wichita State University

Partnering with the community of Arkansas City, four Wichita State students under the supervision of Dr. Kartikeya Saboo attended the first field school of ethnography and applied anthropology in the summer of 2023. They received hands-on training in anthropological and qualitative research techniques.

In The Field:

Focus Group Discussion

Learning how to coordinate a multi-layered, semi-structured conversation between multiple participants in a focus group discussion (FGD). This technique allowed the students to gain insight into the town and its people from a specific group in the community.

Swim Meet

This exercise of observational awareness and note taking allowed the students to assemble associated themes by retroactively comparing notes and discussing details as outsiders of a community.

Farmer's Market

Participating in the weekly farmers market in Ark City let the students try their hands at on-the-spot interviewing and observational methods pertaining to their study. Students spent time visiting with the local vendors and gaining information on the weekly event, as well as how it began and how many residents usually visit the market.
