In the summer of 2012, she became the Promotions and Production intern for FOXKansas.com. It’s an unpaid internship that Mavis snatched up for the learning opportunities and invaluable experience. She hopes to turn the internship into a permanent position. She learned how to use the editing program Final Cut in the ESC, which FOXKansas used too. “That made it very easy for me to work on commercials and promotional spots,” Mavis said.

The ESC is full of overachievers, and Mavis is no exception. “I am a full-time student, I have a full-time internship and I work part-time,” she said. The ideal communication student, she describes herself as great at meeting strangers and easy to work with. “I have no problem telling my opinion, as well as giving constructive feedback,” Mavis said.

Her favorite communication class, Video Storytelling, provided Mavis with enjoyable hours of recording and editing footage. “I have never wanted to work so hard on my homework in my life!” Mavis said. “I love presenting my videos to all of my friends and family.”

The most memorable class she took was Visual Technologies, a communication introductory class where students were given a taste of three different forms of video and photo editing. “I was able to learn creative print ad ideas as well as nifty video footage creations,” said Mavis.

Her journey as an ESC student went from basic communication, to broadcasting, to video editing, and she recently discovered her talent for voiceovers. “I am currently featured in three different advertising spots,” she explained. One is a client ad on MyTVWichita, the second is a FOXKansas promotion, and the third airs on BOBFM.

As a seasoned communication student, Mavis encourages new students to try different classes. Take an extra class out of your comfort zone and see if it fits. “I never thought I would like video production, but I absolutely love it,” she said.
